To spend £1,900 on a rug?

I love it so much.
I've been looking at it for over 1 year and I love it as much now as I did when I first saw it.
I've spent a year looking at rugs and haven't found any I particularly like.
This one, I love!
It's 3 metres x 2 metres.
Am I mad to spend this on a rug?
It would fill the floor space in our lounge.
Would sit on top of a wooden floor.
For context, I bring home £1,500 per month.
We are going camping in England for our family summer holiday.
We are not well off! At all!
But I love this rug and there is an option to pay it off monthly at zero % interest.....
I feel like it's wrong to spend this much on a rug but equally I really wish to have it!!

I’d say yes if you hadn’t mentioned family. Isn’t it pretty risky if you’ve got kids?

I spent over £1,000 on handmade curtains when I got my flat, because I loved them & they were my one big splash, but when I was fostering kittens I put the wonderful curtains away & hung temporary B&M ones.

The originals are back up now because I can trust my sensible adult forever cat not to swing on them.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 04/05/2025 21:45

I'd be terrified that I'd spill something on it or get it dirty. I wouldn't relax in my own home.

For that much I'd go on a lovely summer holiday abroad instead!

summerscomingsoon · 04/05/2025 21:46

If you can afford it then yes.

If you cant or are putting it on credit then no

Astrak · 04/05/2025 21:47

It's up to you, but in your current financial situation, I wouldn't. There's lots of lovely rugs around which are far less costly, and you wouldn't have to worry about dropping stuff like tomato soup on them.

I have managed to save up £500 towards it.
I don't have much money left at the end of each month.
It's taken me a year to save £500.

After this information my answer is a resounding no @Theyalwaysknewbest why would you go on a payment plan for a rug?! A rug? No just no, bad decision making all round if it takes you a year to save 500! Is that your savings in total…or just for the rug?

EconomyClassRockstar · 04/05/2025 21:48

I don't think that's that much for a really good quality rug. That said, I wouldn't spend that much because I like to change them with the seasons.

LaLaLeylandii · 04/05/2025 21:48

It's highly possible you'll enjoy the rug, but if it's taken so long to save maybe it's beyond your budget. Sorry! But also YOLO. It's your money. Make sure you actually see the rug before you buy it though - not just online but in the shop.

minipie · 04/05/2025 21:49

Have a look on Etsy for hand knotted wool rugs OP

Eg this is similar but a lot cheaper

FrodoBiggins · 04/05/2025 21:51

Yes this one is lovely, much better to have this and extra cash

minipie · 04/05/2025 21:51

This one is polyester not wool, very different in real life

minipie · 04/05/2025 21:52

Not saying it’s awful, still a nice rug but there’s a reason the other one is a lot more

Boxfreshrussell · 04/05/2025 21:52

In the nicest possible way, no, because it is out of your budget. If it’s taken you a year to save £500, a rug at £1900 is too much.

OnTheBoardwalk · 04/05/2025 21:53

I've gone interest free for some new guttering after having a waterfall with some dodgy old guttering. I could pay this off if needed

there is no way I’d get in debt for a rug

So you want to spend more than a month's wages on a rug?

Are you going to save up to get it.

For context, I bring home £1,500 per month.

minnienono · 04/05/2025 21:55

Before you buy it research second hand rugs eg Persian etc. also look at the cost of importing directly eg we bought from the manufacturer in India and carried it in - even with fares and duties it would be cheaper than John Lewis but they despatch by mail too. (The place I bought from supplies Liberty)

TheGrimSmile · 04/05/2025 21:56

If it's the linked one, it is very lovely, but it's very light and you will be worrying constantly about it getting trashed. For that reason alone, I would say no. Even though I can see why you love it.

alloutofcareunits · 04/05/2025 21:56

We spent £1500 on our living room rug 9 years ago, still looks beautiful! We’ve two dogs though did take it up for a couple of months while they were being house trained. It’s pure wool and I still love it, money well spent as I look at it every day. However, our income is a lot more that £1500 pm so relatively not such a big risk.

Agapornis · 04/05/2025 21:56

You can't afford it. What other debt do you have? How long is the 0% for? What are the monthly payments? If you saved £500 in a year, that means you can only afford payments of £41.66 a month..

Consider whether you want a terrible credit score for years because you wanted a rug.

Some excellent second hand rugs on Marketplace, local eBay, Gumtree etc for very little money. I have a similar size, 100% wool, £50.

JennyForeigner · 04/05/2025 21:57

I also love this rug but that's because I have it (in a smaller size) It's lovely against our terracotta tiles and would be lovely against a warm wood colour too.

It took months of patient waiting and watching but I got mine from John Pye auctions - they carry the returns and display stock from John Lewis as well as other big shops. They are based near us in the Midlands but ship nationwide. You also often see John Pye stock popping up on Ebay as people resell. I have another JL rug that I'm pretty sure was listed through that route and still paid under 30% of the original cost.

Just passing on as you never know, you might get your dream rug at a bargain price.

TheGrimSmile · 04/05/2025 21:57

Also, I went to an antiques fair recently eg Newark / Ardingly. There was a man there with loads of lovely rugs. Much cheaper than they should be. Could you try somewhere like that?

Bamburghbee · 04/05/2025 21:58

I searched high and low for a perfect rug for my beautiful wooden floor too. I trawled the second-hand market sites and eBay for months and couldn't any I liked. In the end I splurged £500 on a 100% fairisle wool rug from m&s, about 3.4m x 2.4m. It was nothing compared to your £1900 but already way over my budget.. I still love it 10 years on, m&s quality is unbeatable, it is still thick and cushy , and despite being cream in colour and in a high traffic area, it doesn't stain. I don't regret buying it!

MrsJoanDanvers · 04/05/2025 22:00

OP, please don’t do it. It’s more than your monthly salary. I ummed and aahed over a rug in the Oka sale at less than 25% of the price. I bought it and am very pleased-but £1800? Look at West Elm or Oka in the sale. Or there’s a lady in Harrogate selling beautiful rugs from places like Turkey, Afghanistan and some Scandinavian countries. On a budget, Dunelm is pretty good. Get something for now until your circumstances change-you’ll regret it if you buy it. Your finances won’t allow it.

SlashBeef · 04/05/2025 22:01

Can you afford the repayments if it took you a year to save £500?

TokyoSushi · 04/05/2025 22:01

I see it! I love it! If you can make the finances work, get it!
