To spend £1,900 on a rug?

Theyalwaysknewbest · 04/05/2025 21:33

I love it so much.
I've been looking at it for over 1 year and I love it as much now as I did when I first saw it.
I've spent a year looking at rugs and haven't found any I particularly like.
This one, I love!
It's 3 metres x 2 metres.
Am I mad to spend this on a rug?
It would fill the floor space in our lounge.
Would sit on top of a wooden floor.
For context, I bring home £1,500 per month.
We are going camping in England for our family summer holiday.
We are not well off! At all!
But I love this rug and there is an option to pay it off monthly at zero % interest.....
I feel like it's wrong to spend this much on a rug but equally I really wish to have it!!

@Theyalwaysknewbest if that was the rug (the one that was linked) I absolutely love it! If it'll make you happy, go for it

terracelane23 · 05/05/2025 12:25

I wouldn’t go into debt for a rug.

longtompot · 05/05/2025 12:27

@Theyalwaysknewbest I missed your post where you said it took you a year to save £500. Unless you can buy it on credit, I don't think you'll be able to afford it sadly.

I would love a rug from Margo Selby, but at over £2k for the larger sizes it will be a pipe dream for me

You can't afford it. You don't have £1900. I'm surprised anyone would suggest getting into debt for an unnecessary item.

StScholastica · 05/05/2025 12:35

Oooh I'm torn on this one. Part of me says get what you love, do babysitting or get a job in a bar in the evenings to save quicker.
Another part thinks that a rug will just get ruined.
I've been known to treat myself to art and have been lucky that so far it's all gone up in value.
Is there a dupe?

Ossoduro2 · 05/05/2025 12:40

I think you shouldn’t buy it. However, if it were me and I loved it I would just keep an eye on eBay and all the second hand selling forums. These sorts of brands always come up as they do re-sell. Fingers crossed someone much wealthier than you buys it and changes their mind and you can pick it up for a fraction of the price second hand.

80smonster · 05/05/2025 11:58

Yes I found the italics a bit patronising and unnecessary. I assumed they were talking about the JL rug, either way it doesn’t matter. I didn’t come onto this thread for @KilkennyCats interior style and trends advice - which is actually an area I specialise in.

Then you'll know Lots Road, Chelsea Auction house. Moved now to different premises. Not sure if under different ownership as well, they just aren't the same anymore.
In better times I bought some lovely mirrors and artifacts. They also used to have unusual things from film sets and theatre. If you wanted a life size Zebra for your hallway or a Dalek, that was the place to look.
Back then, I would have suggested them for your rug but looking on their website, they only have a total of six to offer.

SnoozingFox · 05/05/2025 12:53

Look, @Theyalwaysknewbest. I am totally on board with the buy good, buy once ethos and very much agree that buying quality to last is the way to go.

But simply put you CANNOT AFFORD this rug. As someone else pointed out you have saved £500 over a year which us just over £40 a month - the 0% finance deal is over 18 months and you would be expected to pay £105 a month - which you cannot afford. You can't afford the finance on the smallest rug either, and that's assuming you are approved for credit in the first place and if money is as tight as you say, you may well not be.

So your options are:

  1. buy a cheaper new rug which you're not happy with because it's not 100% pure wool
  2. Buy a second hand rug
  3. Do without a rug

OP's is the John Lewis one, link on first page.
I was referring to the Luke Irwin 10k rug not being of heritage standard, apparently!

ah thank you.
OP I think you will tire of the colour...

Yes I know them well. I used to pop in on the way to DCCH, but as you say they have moved. They were always quite useful for propping, but everything seems so much more expensive, or maybe I have become more tight fisted? I will add Lots Road to my weekly web stalking of the clouds rugs, I bet if you were clearing a Chelsea town house you’d probably call them.

Walkingonmoss · 05/05/2025 13:04

About 30 years ago I spent £600 on a rug. I earnt about £16,000 a year at the time, so it was a lot for me.

That rug is still in my Living Room and I still love it. It is a very high quality rug though, it was made by a nomadic people. And was used by them until another was made by the family. It’s really thick and durable. It’ll last my lifetime, and then my kids can inherit it if they want.

Only you can decide if you can afford it.

Why would you do that when she said she didn’t want to post a picture?

It was so so easy to find! @Theyalwaysknewbest is the one who posted all the identifying information.
John Lewis, 200 x 300cm, £1,900.
I found it in seconds.

You're not being asked whether or not it was easy to FIND.

The question is about why anyone would POST it when the OP explicitly stated she didn't want this to happen.

stclementine · 05/05/2025 13:28

BigHeadBertha · 04/05/2025 22:15

If you want it that much and you can swing it, get it. You only live once! :)

I say this too. I’ve had a series of cheap rugs due to elderly dog and then puppy issues. When my current 10 month old golden gets out of his velociraptor phase I’m getting a good one! Bugger the money. Sometimes we need to have something nice that brings us joy in the house.

YearlySubscriptionRenewal · 05/05/2025 13:28

I cannot understand why people keep advising to just "buy it". YOU HAVEN'T GOT THE MONEY! You haven't managed to save half in an entire year.

You could maybe get a second job to pay for it, and plan to finance it that way. Is it worth it? Is it realistic?

There's never any guarantee that something you buy will not be destroyed or lose value within a few weeks. Never spend money unless you are ready to lose that amount, you never know.

It doesn't matter if other people find it cheap or expensive, you can only judged based on YOUR finances, and yours are not enough to pay for it.

So she can't be identified on an anonymous forum by a rug she doesn't actually own? So silly.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 05/05/2025 13:42

OP, buy the rug. It is expensive based on your salary but if you really want it this much just buy it.

Years ago I bought a painting. I walked into a gallery, turned around and saw a landscape that just grabbed me. I HAD to have it. I couldn’t afford it but I did not care. I bought it and 12 years later I still love it. It’s been with me on 2 house moves and it’s the first object I’d save in a fire or flood.

Sometimes things do bring joy and happiness. It sounds like this rug will do that.

She explained the reason why she didn't want it posted.

I didn't think it was silly. The buying of the rug is a different matter entirely. But respecting her wishes not to post it was really a small ask.

Of course it's silly.

All this jolly Go for it! Buy It! Read the posts, she literally cannot afford it
Took year to save £500. It’s unfortunately beyond her means

AgentJohnson · 05/05/2025 14:06

Ahhh, DD’s 300 euro high chair. The amount of money I wasted on ‘cool’ shit for DD , urgh.

i balked at spending 300 euros at Rugable but I won’t entertain buying another rug that you can’t just throw in the washing machine. 1500 pounds is a nice starting balance for a savings account.

VickiFromAmsterdam · 05/05/2025 14:31

You’ve been watching the price for a year now, just because it hasn’t been reduced it doesn’t mean to say that it won’t be. I really do wish it would come up on sale for you. If not my greatest fear for you is that you could lose your job.

Boreded · 05/05/2025 14:32

GotToWearShades · 05/05/2025 08:21

The rug will probably last longer than a boiler and they probably do need a floor covering

Don’t be ridiculous. A rug is in addition to the existing wood/laminate/carpet flooring, without a boiler you could literally die in the cold

CalicoPusscat · 05/05/2025 15:20

@Theyalwaysknewbest I know what it's like to have a serious case of the wants.

This rug doesn't seem viable. Is it possible to increase your income and wait until it's on sale?

TheyreStillGoingWithThemPlumsKerr · 05/05/2025 15:21

Check it out in person first. If you still love it, I say get it! I’m on a similar take home wage as you and splashed out on some expensive homeware items and am still pleased I did 4/5 years later. If I’d been financially sensible at the time and bought cheaper alternatives (that I didn’t love), I probably would have replaced by now = false economy!
