To spend £1,900 on a rug?

Theyalwaysknewbest · 04/05/2025 21:33

I love it so much.
I've been looking at it for over 1 year and I love it as much now as I did when I first saw it.
I've spent a year looking at rugs and haven't found any I particularly like.
This one, I love!
It's 3 metres x 2 metres.
Am I mad to spend this on a rug?
It would fill the floor space in our lounge.
Would sit on top of a wooden floor.
For context, I bring home £1,500 per month.
We are going camping in England for our family summer holiday.
We are not well off! At all!
But I love this rug and there is an option to pay it off monthly at zero % interest.....
I feel like it's wrong to spend this much on a rug but equally I really wish to have it!!

Thank you @queenofthesuburbs also 💐👏

Do you not have wool carpets in your house? Or knitwear? I’ve never heard of anyone avoiding wool out of fear of moths. Are you wary of wood in case of wood worm?

@blueleavesgreensky no wool carpets here. My local carpet shop advised against them for young kids and cats. Not many wool clothes either, I find them itchy

Almost nobody has wool carpets these days. How out of touch are you?

What?? All my carpets have always been 100% wool. ‘I’venever had any problems with moths

@Theyalwaysknewbest www.azraimports.com/projects/ikts.php

hopefully that'll work for you. From what your recent said I really would go for the one from JL. It is beautiful and if it sells out again you'll regret it

@longtompot
Ohhhhhh this is frustrating!
I nearly leapt out of my chair with gratefulness, excitement and hope when you posted a link!!
Thank you so much for posting it🙏
The rug is right there on their website!
But their contact email doesn't work. I've tried to email them, and I get an automated message back saying the email address is unknown. I've triple checked it's the correct spelling etc.
I've tried to visit the link to their Facebook page but I get a message which says it's not working.
Instagram page - same.
Thank you though, it's most kind of you.

A lot of carpets are 80/20 wool mix. I have had moths eat my knitwear and scarves before now and have felt a bit nervous for the carpet.

Edited

@Sunholidays - me too. Never had a problem with moths until I had. All cashmere jumpers eaten to bits - DS's dinner jacket eaten - Jaeger camel hair coat eaten. I have moth traps now which very much help - but they are feral little things. Believe me if I weren't battling them I would not be thinking of a non wool carpet , @Seamond recent carpet is 80/20 mix. I kept them at bay with frequent hoovering and much spraying. & rentokil but am bored of them now.

Anyway enough about moths.

queenofthesuburbs · 05/05/2025 23:04

I think the problem with jumpers etc is that they are often hidden away, unworn in dark chests of drawers and are effectively undisturbed.

A carpet that is walked on, exposed to daylight, furniture moved etc will not be as attractive a breeding ground for your average moth. It'll reject in in preference to a nice cashmere jumper it can burrow into the folds and DTD

I've seen moth infestations in wool carpets, but that has been where the house was empty for several months.

Wellretired · 06/05/2025 00:35

I bought a beautiful silk Persian rug for £1000 35 years ago and have never regretted it for a second. It's still iny living room walked on all the time. We've spilled things on it too, just clean it up. Go for it if you can and keep it forever.

@queenofthesuburbs my moth problem with my rug happened when I had a coffee table on top of the rug and they started breeding under the table, which was heavy so not moved often. Lesson learned! But I don’t miss the rug anyway as my ex chose it

BlondiePortz · 06/05/2025 07:00

If I would spend that money I would need to still be able to live normally and not be paranoid with someone spilling anything or it being damaged or cry out 'dont you know how much that cost', if I can't do that then no way would I spend it

I’m assuming your comment is a facetious giggle at the people freaking out about having wool carpets.
I hope it is
otherwise it’s a really weird comment

I don’t think people realise there is no such thing as a ‘wool moth’ don’t you? They are the same thing as referred to as ‘clothes moths’ and they will eat any natural fibres. Very much including cashmere as you say. And silk, angora etc.

TroysMammy · 06/05/2025 07:24

If you had no pets, no children and the savings why not? But you do and you don't so it's not a good idea.

merrymelody · 06/05/2025 07:27

Get the rug! Enjoy life and indulge yourself from time to time.

tempname1234 · 06/05/2025 08:03

Really, this is not outrageous. I’m sure you will see rugs for even more money. Even just buying larger sized ruggable rug's a be that much.

you’re talking about, for you and your budget, an investment piece.

the size of it, it will fit in a room in your house no matter where you move to and with paint vomit changes easily done, you can always have it fit in

my main concern with buying expensive things for the home are will I enjoy it long term? Will it last long term?

clearly yes for both, particularly as it is a wool rug. They’re made to last. Many last years and years with correct care

that then is the real question. Can you and your family care for this rug?

I ask this because my husband destroyed a rug I loved because he insists upon eating while watching tv. The sheer amount of spills, ground in wax from baby bell cheese wrappers, snot from licking his nose etc ruined the rug. I had it ofufessuinslly cleaned often, would turn it around etc. it just became so gritty and threadbare in the area where he sat that it only lasted a little over 10 years.

I now have a ruggable washable rug.

dint get be started in the stairs carpeting with all the dirty shoes and spilled milky tea with loads of sugar being spilled often.

so really ask yourself if you buy this rug, will it last with how your family are.

if they respect nice things then go for it. It will be your piece to cherish and get joy from.

Icanttakethisanymore · 06/05/2025 08:54

I am typically very supportive of buying good quality things that will last you a long time and you will enjoy for years. However..... it sounds like this is a really big stretch for you financially. I just don't think you can afford it.

Any chance any family members would chuck in some money for Christmas / Birthday? DO you have anything you can sell that you do't use / wear anymore?

Azureshores · 06/05/2025 09:57

I love rugs op and am always buying them! My advice is try places like the RugSeller and Benuta for affordable ones in the traditional styles. They're not hand knotted so are a lot cheaper but will still have the look you want.

When we first bought our house I bought some really expensive ones from Laura Ashley and they got absolutely filthy and I was always stressed about spills etc so I would say no to the expensive one, especially as it would mean going into debt.

nzeire · 06/05/2025 10:53

It is absolutely gorgeous and you LOVE IT!

you’ve waited a year, you’re still obsessing, you actually need it in your life, it will bring joy for years and years and years!

it will transform your room and you’ll have it paid off in a year!

GO FOR IT!!!!

namechangealerttt · 06/05/2025 11:21

My ex father in law harboured a 50 year grudge against a bank manager that turned him down when he wanted a loan a rug.
The bank manager did the right thing, The ex FIL retired in his 70s due to health reasons still owing over $250k on his home, and now lives in a property owned by another relative because after selling his home to pay the mortgage he couldn't afford anything to meet his standards.

NotISaidTheCat · 06/05/2025 12:07

Get the rug, OP. You love it, and it'll bring you a lifetime of joy and pleasure.

LovingLimePeer · 06/05/2025 12:57

Sunholidays · 05/05/2025 21:17

You have done your research

You have seen it in real life

You love it and know that it will fit your house perfectly

You have a sensible plan to pay for it

I say go ahead and buy it

People spend double that on meaningless holidays in the costas every year

How is buying on credit when she can only afford to pay off £500/ year, thus using up 100% of her disposable income for 3 years a sensible plan?

She can't afford it. The rug is far too expensive for someone on her income. I cannot believe someone would put their financial future in jeopardy for a rug they can't afford. It would be utter madness.

OP should either get a better paying job or buy a cheaper or second hand rug. I don't think all the, 'you love it, so buy it hun' talk is at all helpful. It is enabling a person on very low income to get in long-term debt for a (probably very nice but ultimately unaffordable) rug.

EllieEllie25 · 06/05/2025 13:32

I think you should do it. I spent ages looking for a living room rug, struggled with justifying the cost of the expensive ones, got a smaller much cheaper polyester one trying to be sensible but it annoyed me every day and I and ended up selling it and spending a similar amount to yours on a big wool one that I love. It makes the room feel good, still looks perfect a few years later and wool is actually very good at resisting stains. You’ve given it a lot of thought, I think it’s time to give yourself permission to go ahead!

ManchesterGirl2 · 06/05/2025 13:42

Given that you are in no other debt, and that you have an emergency fund set aside that you won't touch, and you've thought through the finances, I change my previous "don't do it" vote. Personally a rug wouldn't be my priority, but it really sounds like it's what makes your heart sing, so I think it's up to you how you spend your income.

Mary28 · 06/05/2025 15:09

There's someone I follow on instagram and I'd love to buy one of her rugs but between my big dog (who destroys all the hug rugs) and the fact that I'm the only female in the house, (sorry males but you guys are dirty) there's not a hope I'll spend that on a rug. If I thought I could keep it clean and unabused I would certainly spend that on a rug. Anything that gives you joy is worth it. I've spent that on paintings for the house and jewellery for myself and some kitchen appliances that I wanted. They were unnecessary spends but I do not regret the spend. I work hard enough for my money and I provide a lot for my family. If I want to spend some of my money on myself why the hell not.

Tinyrabbit · 06/05/2025 15:38

Buying something you really love, which is also high quality, is always a good thing imo. I've done it myself with furniture and a rug or two, and have never regretted it. A good rug can really make a room, and you will be able to enjoy it every day. I would say go ahead and buy it.
And please don't worry about moths - a rug in the daylight, which is vacuumed regularly is very unlikely to get a moth infestation. I would advise to turn it over every so often and hoover the back thoroughly as well.
It's a gorgeous rug - go on - treat yourself!
