To spend £1,900 on a rug?

I love it so much.
I've been looking at it for over 1 year and I love it as much now as I did when I first saw it.
I've spent a year looking at rugs and haven't found any I particularly like.
This one, I love!
It's 3 metres x 2 metres.
Am I mad to spend this on a rug?
It would fill the floor space in our lounge.
Would sit on top of a wooden floor.
For context, I bring home £1,500 per month.
We are going camping in England for our family summer holiday.
We are not well off! At all!
But I love this rug and there is an option to pay it off monthly at zero % interest.....
I feel like it's wrong to spend this much on a rug but equally I really wish to have it!!

Obviously we need to see the rug!

KilkennyCats · 04/05/2025 21:36

In principle, not at all, but yeah, let’s see it first 😁

MidnightPatrol · 04/05/2025 21:36

My only warning would be, will you be able to relax and enjoy the rug given risk of damage?

Rather than a payment plan, why not save up - that will really show if you want it.

Theyalwaysknewbest · 04/05/2025 21:38

I don't want to post a picture because we all have very different, individual taste.
I don't want to read posts of people saying "I don't like it"! which inevitably will happen!
Plus it's too outing because all my mum friends use this forum! So theyd recognise it! And IF I were to buy it, I wouldn't want people to know how much it cost!
But it's wool.
3 x 2 metres.

Yabu, it will make life stressful as a spill or stuff on it will be a huge deal, and that money could go on you all having a better holiday or more days out next year.
With your income it would be a ridiculous choice

What is it made of? If it's a good quality wool rug it could last for 20-50 years, so the cost per year is small. If it's cotton then it won't last long.

I have managed to save up £500 towards it.
I don't have much money left at the end of each month.
It's taken me a year to save £500.

I said you are not being unreasonable but now that I see it took you a year to save £500 I think YABU

CanOfMangoTango · 04/05/2025 21:41

Get the rug.

We bought one a similar size for our sitting room.

I love it, look at it every day.

I think you'd be mad to spend on a rug an amount that would take you almost 4 years to save

HairyToity · 04/05/2025 21:41

Sorry but no. I splurged on some furniture once, in the next house it didn't work in the space and I regretted it.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 04/05/2025 21:41

So it's four years worth of savings? Sorry but that sounds insane.

Mumoftwo2022 · 04/05/2025 21:41

Rug is far too expensive for the wage you earn. John Lewis alright quality is good is overpriced when it comes to home furnishing .

HairyToity · 04/05/2025 21:42

Also what happens if you have a moth infestation! A diamond might have some resale value but a rug won't.

OnTheBoardwalk · 04/05/2025 21:42

Will your family distroy the rug? To save this much how much are you putting towards the family bills?

I’m for buying an expensive thing that does me forever. What do your family think?

KilkennyCats · 04/05/2025 21:43

Oh. I don’t like that.

UpJacksArseAndRoundTheCorner · 04/05/2025 21:43

Assuming you have a DP, what have they said? Did you discuss it with them?

I think their opinion matters more than internet randoms.

Quite honestly if it’s taken you a year to save up £500 you really shouldn’t spend £1900 on a rug. Do you own your house, have you got a decent pension pot, have you got regency savings and long term investments, have you got savings for your DCs for uni and for house deposits, do you have enough money each month
to go on days out and treat your DCs, holidays? All those things for me would be prioritised before a rug.

atlanta1 · 04/05/2025 21:44

It’s a lot of money but I think investing in something you love for a space you spend lots of time relaxing in and enjoying, isn’t a bad idea - but - do you have kids or animals? What colour pattern - will it get grubby or show spills? Accidental damage cover on insurance? The answers to those would massively influence my decision.

WeeOrcadian · 04/05/2025 21:44

Not all heroes wear capes

You just saved me a search 😁

FloatingSquirrel · 04/05/2025 21:44

It says 18 month repayment plan at £105 a month. If it's taken you a year to save £500 then you won't be able to afford the repayments.

Agreed. You can't afford an overpriced rug, sorry. One day you may be able to but today is not that day.
