To spend £1,900 on a rug?

I love it so much.
I've been looking at it for over 1 year and I love it as much now as I did when I first saw it.
I've spent a year looking at rugs and haven't found any I particularly like.
This one, I love!
It's 3 metres x 2 metres.
Am I mad to spend this on a rug?
It would fill the floor space in our lounge.
Would sit on top of a wooden floor.
For context, I bring home £1,500 per month.
We are going camping in England for our family summer holiday.
We are not well off! At all!
But I love this rug and there is an option to pay it off monthly at zero % interest.....
I feel like it's wrong to spend this much on a rug but equally I really wish to have it!!

These rugs you're all linking to are all made of polyester! And they're all thin, with no thick pile to them!
The rug I love is wool and is luxurious and thick.
I'm not getting a polyester rug.

You're right not to entertain polyester, I saw the others and didnt post them

But have you thought about a thick cotton one or second hand wool?

LovingLimePeer · 04/05/2025 22:23

I think you can't afford this rug. I'm sure it's lovely and I'm very sorry.

You've only saved £500 in a whole year. I assume then that it would take you another 3 years to pay off the rug using all your spare money (and not including any money spent on interest).

This is assuming nothing goes wrong eg. Car or boiler issues, which could mean you would default on the loan.

I know some people get a bit sniffy about second hand house stuff but it can be a way of getting beautiful/expensive things for much less. (A case of champagne lifestyle, lemonade money working well!). Our household brings in c.£10000 each month and I bought my rug second hand on eBay and had it professionally cleaned. Looks beautiful and cost us about £150 all in.

I wouldn't even spend £1900 on a rug. If I had that spare money, I'd invest that in my 4 year Old's pension in the hope of an extra £28000 in today's money at retirement for him (or £1100 per year in retirement if he took our the recommended amount annually - enough to buy a fancy rug every year for the rest of his life!)

I loved the Vivienne Westwood flag rug by the Rug Company.
Years later I saw it on marketplace for 1/3 the new price. After it sat there for a month I made a cheeky offer and bought it.
It’s like new as the previous owner was worried about damage and didn’t use it.
Have you looked on eBay, marketplace and Etsy? Might be worth doing a google image search or even asking the store if they ever do a display stock sale.
It’s taken years but my house furnished with the best of everything and I’ve never purchased anything full price.

BatchCookBabe · 04/05/2025 22:31

No rug from John Lewis is worth 2 grand sorry @Theyalwaysknewbest Especially if it's the one we all think it is.

And going into debt for it/paying it off monthly/on the never never.

No. Just no (sorry!)

Labraradabrador · 04/05/2025 22:31

a lovely rug can absolutely make a room, but I’ve never had a rug last more than 5 years due to kids, dogs and a clumsy red wine loving husband. As such, I look longingly at nicer rugs but only buy ones that can be readily washed, have colours and patterns that hide stains or are not so expensive that I would be upset if we needed to throw out.

I have managed to save up £500 towards it.
I don't have much money left at the end of each month.
It's taken me a year to save £500.

Oh then yeah yabu sorry x

Kindly, you can’t afford the rug.

TheJinxMinx · 04/05/2025 22:35

Unless u live in a pet free child free home i wouldn't trust me it will not stay perfect there will be crumbs, spillage, shoe marks etc no matter how long u keep up the whole no eating near the rug shoes off someone always sneaks by and ruins it. Also its very very expensive unless u are a celebrity. Given ur monthly total I personally wouldn't id just get one similar in colours if possible. BUT if you have savings there and u love and seldom treat urself then perhaps why not although if its on finance I wouldn't its a very expensive rug!

PrimalLass · 04/05/2025 22:36

I think it's beautiful. Keep saving and if you still want it when you've saved all the money then go for it.

nadine90 · 04/05/2025 22:36

If you could afford it, I’d have said go for it. But you really can’t op. Don’t get yourself bogged down with a debt over something you just like the look of. The £500 you’ve saved could no doubt get you a beautiful, thick rug in a similar style. Keep looking x

beetr00 · 04/05/2025 22:38

@Theyalwaysknewbest

I'd say you are being a wee bit unreasonable, especially if you have children or pets.

Won't you be on tenterhooks, all the while, in case someone spills something
etc..

You could hang it on the wall though (if you have children) 😉

FloatingSquirrel · 04/05/2025 22:38

minipie · 04/05/2025 21:51

This one is polyester not wool, very different in real life

But sometimes people can't always afford the very best without vastly compromising in other areas of life. I wouldn't say polyester and wool is a difference worth £1670 when it's taken her a year to save £500 and she has DC.

DollydaydreamTheThird · 04/05/2025 22:39

Even if you said you earnt 15k a month, I'd still think you need your head feeling to spend that much on a rug. Given your earnings, I would say save the money and invest it instead. Get a cheaper rug.

GotToWearShades · 04/05/2025 22:40

KilkennyCats · 04/05/2025 21:43

Oh. I don’t like that.

It's timeless class and the price is very reasonable.

If instead you buy a swirly patterned rug rather than something classic like this you will just keep 'updating'.

Catchame · 04/05/2025 22:40

We spent £1800 on a JL rug nearly 20 years ago! It's still beautiful. We were ultra precious about it at first, and dreaded spilling the slightest drop of wine, but then had kids and a dog and stopped being precious. It still looks beautiful, it was a really good buy.

That said, we wouldn't spend that amount now (pre kids and well paid jobs) - I'd find a cheaper alternative!

Sorry but no, if this is the case. I can't afford anything either, if it's any consolation.

AnnaL94 · 04/05/2025 22:43

Fuck it.

If you want it. Buy it. Get it on Klarna.

Just make sure you have enough money to buy food and pay your bills.

VivIsBlonde · 04/05/2025 22:43

I clicked YABU because you should just buy it if you love it!
in the 12 months you’ve been pondering you could have saved up enough to buy it 🤣🤣

Seamond · 04/05/2025 22:44

It may go in the sale, though this is more likely to happen after you have bought it. I bought one of the Morris ones when it when it was half price as it was a bit dear, I'm sure I enjoy it more because it was a bargain

@Theyalwaysknewbest has saved 500, which is all they could save…

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 04/05/2025 22:44

Are you prepared for your children, your adult family or friends to spill or drop stuff on it?
Do any toddlers or pets ever enter your home?

I don't think you can really afford it if it's taken you that long to save £500, so I don't think you are going to be relaxed about it getting possibly damaged by everyday life with a young family before it's even paid for in full.
If you have an unexpected bill, are you okay with the hit to your credit record if you can't make the payments?

If you have a robot hoover it can wear the edges off your rug over time if it's made of wool.
I've got 2 wool rugs that need one edge rebinding on each where the hoover climbs up onto them - took a couple of years for that to show the wear but it's becoming a little obvious now.

Then of course, there is the risk of moths.

Can you really afford, not just in money but emotionally, to treat it like a cheap rug once you've actually bought it so everyone can live their lives not stressing about Mummys rug?
If not I'd look for something lower in cost.

Right now, you could buy a much cheaper rug and have some money left to either treat yourself or your family with from your savings.
Or you can take on debt for something you will struggle to pay for.

FunnyRaven · 04/05/2025 22:45

Buy the rug! I searched high and low for a rug, found the perfect one at £1800, debated for WEEKS whether to buy it or not - bought it and don’t regret it one bit, I LOVE it!

GotToWearShades · 04/05/2025 22:45

Honestly, a UK holiday cottage in peak season is around the same price. Replacement windows, a new boiler, a few essential pieces of non flat pack furniture are more. Getting things in context, it's a good buy.

sowemeetagainbananaman · 04/05/2025 22:46

as long as it’s good quality, you are not being unreasonable

MolkosTeenageAngst · 04/05/2025 22:46

It’s a lot of money to spend on something that will live on the floor, you can’t really afford it if it costs over a month’s wages and you’ve not even be able to save 1/3 of its cost in a year. It would be so easy for a rug to get damaged, especially if you have kids or pets; stains from food/ drink spills, footprints, sickness etc. You will be constantly anxious about anybody ruining the rug so that you won’t actually be able to enjoy it or the room it’s in and if it does get stained or damaged, which is likely with a rug, you could never afford to replace it and will probably feel hugely upset at the money spent. I don’t think spending this much on a rug will bring you the happiness you want, I think it will bring anxiety and regret.
