To spend £1,900 on a rug?

I love it so much.
I've been looking at it for over 1 year and I love it as much now as I did when I first saw it.
I've spent a year looking at rugs and haven't found any I particularly like.
This one, I love!
It's 3 metres x 2 metres.
Am I mad to spend this on a rug?
It would fill the floor space in our lounge.
Would sit on top of a wooden floor.
For context, I bring home £1,500 per month.
We are going camping in England for our family summer holiday.
We are not well off! At all!
But I love this rug and there is an option to pay it off monthly at zero % interest.....
I feel like it's wrong to spend this much on a rug but equally I really wish to have it!!

Everyone needs something in their life that sparks joy. Buy it.

I clicked YABU because you should just buy it if you love it!
in the 12 months you’ve been pondering you could have saved up enough to buy it 🤣🤣

The issue is she couldn't, in the 12 months she only managed to save £500

Susieblue18 · 04/05/2025 23:09

Buy the rug. It’s something that you will look at every day and can give you enjoyment for years, that’s worth it 😊

SnoopyPajamas · 04/05/2025 23:10

Maybe if it came with a phoenix egg rolled up inside it that would grant all my wishes 😂

Boreded · 04/05/2025 23:11

Coming here to post this link too…think that this person works for John Lewis? Only way someone would be stupid enough to spend more than their monthly take home on a rug when they have only £500 savings. Imagine if their car broke or needed expensive work done, or their phone…how would they manage whilst using all of their money on a rug ffs

PiggyPigalle · 04/05/2025 23:12

The room it's going in must warrant it too, Do you have lovely lighting and mirrors. Good soft furnishings?

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 04/05/2025 23:14

Ring up John Lewis’s and find out when their carpet sale is on. I can see that being reduced by 40% then get it.

I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't have a car because of not being able to afford it.. I have a family member like this and it frustrates me so much. She's on a low income with 2 DC, but would be able to scrape by if she didn't make ridiculous impulsive purchases like a jacuzzi and changing perfectly good furniture on a whim. Her house does look nice, but she has no car, the DC have family members paying for their clubs as she said she couldn't afford it, and they only go on holidays paid for by extended family.

We can all be materialistic to an extent, but when there's DC there needs to be an element of restraint and prioritising them.

Honestly, a UK holiday cottage in peak season is around the same price. Replacement windows, a new boiler, a few essential pieces of non flat pack furniture are more. Getting things in context, it's a good buy.

Edited

But a boiler is a necessity.

You know , life is short and very precious.
Do the thing that gives you joy.
Plenty of people would drop that on a handbag.

TheBreezeTheBreeze · 04/05/2025 23:29

sounds a bit 'working class angst' but go for it Grin

Yeah, rich people

WeAreAllBucked · 04/05/2025 23:33

That is just a ridiculous amount to spend on a rug considering your income.

CalicoPusscat · 04/05/2025 23:36

I bought a beautiful silk knotted rug, I'm low income (part time) and it was £500. I don't regret mine.

Do you and your husband have very little disposable income @Theyalwaysknewbest?

Oneeata · 04/05/2025 23:38

Save your money.

I'm currently sat on sofa I saved over a year for. I pined for it, longed for it, I kept watching for it to go on sale and it never did then had a little bonus from work and had a "fuck it" moment ordered it an paid outright. It's the most uncomfortable, inconvenient, horrendous waste of almost £3000 ever. I'm so ashamed, it's awful, I hate it with a passion. To add insult to injury I also had to pay £300 to have my window out to get it in the house. 😭😭 Will never make the same mistake again.

gertinthebackofthevan · 04/05/2025 23:55

Wait till it comes up on Facebook market place or ebay. I do that with designer furniture pieces i want.. it's a slow game but I've got things I want but can't afford / justify that way

Zone2NorthLondon · 04/05/2025 23:56

NO on basis you can’t afford the repayment

How does that work? Do staff actually disclose the dates and details of sale on request
Why would they disclose this? Surely the retailer wants max amount sales at full price? As opposed to sale with reduced price

Langdale3 · 05/05/2025 00:07

Rug fan here. It is too expensive if that’s the one, unless the workmanship and materials are exceptional and it isn’t possible to tell from the photos.

gotmyknickersinatwist · 05/05/2025 00:11

What about something like this from Ikea?
It's wool, high pile, a bit smaller than yours, a lot cheaper than yours, not the same colour 😉but light too.
Ikea have some v.nice ones, and they're good quality.

Cakeandcheeseforever · 05/05/2025 00:13

I had a rug like that from John Lewis; it got mauled by moths. Luckily my ex bought it so I didn’t care too much.

Lighteningstrikes · 05/05/2025 00:20

It’s really lovely.
I would definitely checkout when JL’s next sale is on.
