I think the values that keep life on the right side of the law and in good health are a good rule of thumb.

The person being murdered, the definition of person

Oh right. I see what you are doing here. I am anti-murder but pro choice. I don't deem abortion to be murder.

AdultHumanFemale · 03/05/2025 13:03

Hm. Struggling to articulate a 'non-Christian' value (as opposed to a belief) by which I live. I don't believe in Heaven or Hell, or inherent 'evil'.

I don't believe in the anthropocentric notion of God giving Man dominion over all things. As a lived experience, which informs my whole life, there is only Now.

Simplynotsimple · 03/05/2025 12:57

I live by non-theological principles. Religion doesn’t have a monopoly on morality, a magic man in the sky is not needed to understand that killing and stealing is wrong, or that you should generally treat others how you yourself would like to be treated day to day. I don’t follow ‘be kind’ idealisms either, every person and situation should be approached with self protection first (especially as a woman). Religion has never had any bearing on how I live, I was raised Christian but have been an atheist since I was a preteen.

DD maintains that it is actually much more impressive when Atheists do charitable work etc as they are doing is because they are decent people rather than for "God Points"

Such an obtuse thread just to say you are anti- abortion, OP.

Have you heard of the Bible?

yup and read it many times. Still doesn't make your question any clearer.....also not all of the whole bible is "Christian"

ArminTamzerian · 03/05/2025 13:05

cardibach · 03/05/2025 12:48

Which murder?
Murder. Killing other people. Loads of non-Christians (non-any religion) don’t think murder is a good thing to do.

Lots of Christians and no Christians alike are perfectly happy with killing. It just depends who.

Also, murder and killing are not synonyms.

The person being murdered, the definition of person

If this is an anti choice thing, it's important to note that foetuses are, by definition, not persons.

Blobbitymacblob · 03/05/2025 13:07

I’m not sure if I’m qualified to give an answer. I was raised Christian, live in a culture that is now largely secular but predicated on centuries of Christian values and if I could find a church that was aligned with the teachings of JC, but wasn’t corrupted by patriarchal power plays, I’d sign up.

And I’m not stupid enough to start my own.

So in Christian terms I’d probably be, at best, heretical.

I like the do unto others, don’t cast the first stone, and sort out your own shit before you pick on others principles.

Not so keen on the shaming of women for having sex, persecution of homosexuals, denigration of other cultures and religions, and I don’t believe in possession, resurrection or virgin births, and have no particular desire to torture or murder people who don’t agree with me.

guidedoptionaldestiny · 03/05/2025 13:08

I actually devised and live by my own ‘religion’. Some of my values are similar to Christian ones and those of other religions, the base level things such as be kind, treat others with respect. One thing we do is to make an effort to be anonymously charitable/ do anonymous good deeds as I feel that seeking recognition for doing something good is self centred rather than doing something purely for the sake of kindness and no more.

A big difference is not having a set place of worship or set times or acts of worship instead we believe that ‘prayer’ (we term it as ‘communication’ can be done anywhere 24/7).

We also do not have funerals.

For me, it was seeing so much hypocrisy in calling oneself Christian. I grew up in a very Christian community, but the amount of affairs, out of wedlock children being born, judgement on women who weren’t ‘settled’ by their early 20s, ‘do as I say not as I do’ attitudes were beyond anything. It just turned ‘moral values’ into some sort of ‘taboo challenge’ rather than accept people have ups and downs, different lifestyles and did not need to toe the expected line of conservative values to be fulfilled and worthy.

I think these are Christian values, no?

No. Because lots of non Christians have them. And plenty of Christians dont share them.

CranfordScones · 03/05/2025 13:11

Many of my values may chime with 'Christian' values, but no religion owns those values. Some religious people act like they have exclusive rights to virtue and goodness. They don't.

LobeliaBaggins · 03/05/2025 13:12

Bluedabadeeba · 03/05/2025 13:09

I think these are Christian values, no?

Excuse me? You think non Christians are unkind dicks?
Also I dont call colonising and evangelising live and let live.

thepariscrimefiles · 03/05/2025 13:14

If the people in Trump's cabinet, which is allegedly Christian, are the epitome of Christian values, that would mean that lying, cheating, corruption, sexual misconduct, adultery, domestic violence, racism, homophobia and general mockery and unkindness are all Christian values. But they are anti-abortion so according to many US evangelical Christians, that's all it takes to get to heaven.

I am not a Christian and I don't live by any of those values.

Octavia64 · 03/05/2025 13:16

I’m not a Christian.

I don’t follow Christian values in the following ways:

I have eaten pig
(Leviticus chapter 11 verse 7)

I did not get purified after giving birth
(Leviticus chapter 12 verse 4)

I didn’t always have a shower after having sex with a man
(Leviticus chapter 15 verse 18)

LobeliaBaggins · 03/05/2025 13:12

Or misogyny and homophobia, which are very much religious values. Along with hatred of other theological beliefs, often within the same religion never mind against others. The whole ‘I’m right and everyone else is wrong’ line of thought is bad enough anyway with all ideologies, but then to suggest those who don’t follow religious values are going to pay for it in this life and the next is an extra level of being a dick to be honest.

queenMab99 · 03/05/2025 13:17

I am not a Christian, although they do have a lot of values that I try to follow. It's more what I don't believe which makes me non Christian. I believe that Jesus Christ existed as a historical fact. I believe that he was a man with great insight, but the religion, like all other well known religions has been used to oppress women and other members of society, despite the reputed words he left us with, giving the opposite advice. History shows that when men get into a position of power, they strengthen their position by saying that God has put them in charge, and given them laws, so that everything they do and say has to be obeyed. It is surprising that the churches, aristocracy and royalty, still have so much power and money in this day and age. I believe that there is a higher power in this creation, and that the rules we should live by to be happy and peaceful are quite obvious to most people, because we are part of it. We all know how we should behave, if we allow ourselves to see it.

Karmakamelion · 03/05/2025 13:18

Tolerance

dairydebris · 03/05/2025 13:21

Disingenuous.

They were human values before they were called Christian values.

Your question could read... what decent human values have been co opted as Christian values but are really just obvious correct ways to behave?

BlossomBlanket · 03/05/2025 12:36

I have the same question. Can you provide an example. Thanks.

These values are ones I've chosen for myself since getting away from Christians - not all Christians are the same of course, but I've chosen them
