Have you heard of the Bible?

Yes, of course I have. I wanted @BlossomBlanket to outline what Christian values means to them.

I think that they are the same values as most core religions so I wouldn't call the Christian.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 03/05/2025 12:44

beetr00 · 03/05/2025 12:43

and there, exactly, is where you've lost it.

Bit of a snarky response for "a bible loving christian"

Agreed.

Also not surprised.

Yes it was snarky, but it wasn't a serious question was it?

What do you mean?

"Thou shalt not commit murder" is claimed as a Christian value, but is clearly a universal human value.

But it isn't. Because the subject of said "murder" has many interpretations

OP posts:
cardibach · 03/05/2025 12:47

BlossomBlanket · 03/05/2025 12:44

Yes it does - its stance on usury for instance, shared with Islam but not by Judaism

Is that stance a ‘value’ strictly?
It’s not exclusive to Christianity either, is it? Plus I bet most Christians don’t follow that one and have mortgages etc…

LobeliaBaggins · 03/05/2025 12:47

BlossomBlanket · 03/05/2025 12:47

Could you elaborate please? I dont understand this.

BlossomBlanket · 03/05/2025 12:47

Which murder?
Murder. Killing other people. Loads of non-Christians (non-any religion) don’t think murder is a good thing to do.

BlossomBlanket · 03/05/2025 12:45

and how would we interpret that, when you seem to be trying to make a point?

Have you heard of "Judge not, lest ye be judged" smh

Ferretedaway · 03/05/2025 12:50

Atheist but 5 - 10 of the Ten Commandments, I follow. Generally I try take people as individuals not as a representative of a race, belief system, culture etc. I respect people who try to do ‘the right thing’ just because it happens to be the right thing, rather than to please or get some reward, from a deity, or because they might punish me or my loved ones if I don’t follow ‘the rules’

BlondiePortz · 03/05/2025 12:50

AnonWho23 · 03/05/2025 12:27

What exactly is a Christian value or a non Christian value?

And presuming there is a lot of non Christians in the world wthere would be a lot doing non Christian things whatever they are

Waitingfordoggo · 03/05/2025 12:52

I have never vocalised my ‘values’ but in a nutshell:

Don’t kill or hurt anyone, don’t steal anything

Don’t lie/deceive

Look out for the vulnerable: elderly/disabled/children, and be ready to defend or help if needed

Try not to annoy people or do things that infringe on others’ way of life/peace and quiet

Try to make conscientious decisions when buying things (aka don’t buy endless plastic crap on Amazon/Temu etc 😬)

Do what I can to minimise waste from my family home, and damage to the environment

And I know it’s a Christian one, but I like ‘do not worship false idols’. In the 21st Century, popular idols appear to be: money, beauty, cosmetic surgery and celebrities. Beyond earning enough money to live on, I try to ignore these idols as much as possible.

I don’t think my ‘values’ are unusual or special and I imagine the majority of the world’s inhabitants have the same or similar values.

AnonWho23 · 03/05/2025 12:52

It actually was a serious question. I wanted to know what Christian values means to you as the OP and what values particularly you were referring to.

BlossomBlanket · 03/05/2025 12:47

What on earth does that mean? What is the 'subject' of a murder? Does it mean the definition of murder?

You are being deliberately obtuse.

Being a decent human and believing that religion is the cause of all conflict.

Hoppinggreen · 03/05/2025 12:53

I generally live by "Don't be a Dick" unless there is direct benefit to me in doing so.

MiddlingMarch · 03/05/2025 12:53

I'm a Tufty Club fundamentalist myself, so not running in front of moving cars or swimming in dangerous waters.

Otherwise, the concept of human decency probably predates the bible and christianity and the concept of a god by a good few thousand years. So. That.

AyeRight78 · 03/05/2025 12:54

MAGAs are all Christian apparently. So as a non-Christian, I value everything they don’t.

MasterBeth · 03/05/2025 12:56

BlossomBlanket · 03/05/2025 12:47

But it isn't. Because the subject of said "murder" has many interpretations

Whereas Christians are all in perfect agreement with each other about everything, including the tenets of their religion...

I live by non-theological principles. Religion doesn’t have a monopoly on morality, a magic man in the sky is not needed to understand that killing and stealing is wrong, or that you should generally treat others how you yourself would like to be treated day to day. I don’t follow ‘be kind’ idealisms either, every person and situation should be approached with self protection first (especially as a woman). Religion has never had any bearing on how I live, I was raised Christian but have been an atheist since I was a preteen.

CurlewKate · 03/05/2025 12:57

I believe, with Humanists, that “in the absence of an afterlife and any discernible purpose to the universe, human beings can act to give their own lives meaning by seeking happiness in this life and helping others to do the same”

Even more baffled. Do you mean abortion? Why so opaque?
I am very very pro- choice. Whatever that makes me.

BlossomBlanket · 03/05/2025 12:57

Ohhh you’re goading about abortion, maybe be clearer in your OP. A person is a human who can exist outside of the womb, they are not a person when a cluster of cells. Hope that’s clear.
