At least 6 of the Ten Commandments

  1. You shall have no other gods before Me.
  2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image (idol) or bow down to them.
  3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
  5. Honor your father and your mother.
  6. You shall not murder.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You shall not steal.
  9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  10. You shall not covet (anything that belongs to your neighbor).

It's not possible to keep all of these, that was the whole point of the New Testament and the Jesus story.

Justfreedom · 03/05/2025 15:00

I do what makes me happy and dont care what others think i stick to the law not the bible.

MoveYourSelfDearie · 03/05/2025 15:02

Women are equal to men
Abortion is fine
Contraception is fine
Sex out of marriage is fine
Invisible sky people don't exist
My existence will end when I die
Men can love men
Women can love women
Gay people can get married
Elders shouldn't necessarily be respected
Children can be born without taboo into families that don't consist of a married heterosexual couple

I have other values, which boardly align with Christianity, but aren't unique to Christianity. I'm not going to purposely hurt anyone, steal, commit a serious crime...

I said at least 6. And it’s perfectly possible.

3amamama · 03/05/2025 15:03

Listen to others. Think for yourself. Act for everyone.

RareMaker · 03/05/2025 15:03

None that are Christian. Many that are good morals.

Ponderingwindow · 03/05/2025 15:03

Atheist
just a strong internal sense of not wanting anyone to experience things I would not want to experience

External morality scares me. How do people not just naturally know the difference between right and wrong?

Silvers11 · 03/05/2025 14:52

These are Christian Values!!

Maybe, but Christianity didn't invent them, and it doesn't have a monopoly on them. . From my perspective, they're just basic human values.

It's not.
It was never meant to be possible.

Yes, I often wonder this.

3amamama · 03/05/2025 15:07

I think a lot of ‘Christian values’ are good, too, but they are good independent of any nexus with Jesus / any deity.

There are however huge, huge, problems with some other ‘Christian values’ and their interpretation / implementation / realisation by some Christians.

CatsWhiskerz · 03/05/2025 15:07

'Christian' values... how did Christianity nail these to their cross as 'Christian' because they're all innate human societal norms of behaviour.
I do however find a lot of Christian's / any other religious person who does anything untoward / bad etc will hide behind their religion - and another thing that's extremely unchristian is when religious people look down at others who don't share the same faith
So with that in mind, I'd say my values are above a lot of peoples Christian values

What do you mean?

"Thou shalt not commit murder" is claimed as a Christian value, but is clearly a universal human value.

It's Jewish actually. Wink

MamaLenny · 03/05/2025 15:23

I'm not homophobic or misogynist

araiwa · 03/05/2025 15:27

An eye for an eye

And

Turn the other cheek

Which I think covers everything and anything I want to do

Okitsme · 03/05/2025 15:27

I have no belief, however, I was raised in a Christian household where what good you did in the world was more important than the performance you put on. I find the ideas promoted in the bible by Jesus a pretty good place to start. Don’t judge, share, help others whoever they are makes a pretty good start.
Religion is a tool used by inadequate men and women to herd the unthinking, it divides and promotes the ideas of ‘others’ who cause all the problems.
OP, you are part of the problem, question, don’t blindly follow and don’t impose your moral values on others.

some countries kill people after they have committed crimes - so thats not christian values

Silsatrip · 03/05/2025 15:32

Non Christian values:

I don't believe 68% of the world is going to hell just because they happened to be born to non Christian parents/ in non Christian countries. I don't judge or condemn people who have a different god or gods

I don't believe in hell.

I don't believe genocide is ever justifiable (e.g. book of Joshua, Deuteronomy 20:16–20)

I don't believe in unobtainable standards (e.g. to be perfect)

I don't believe covering up CSA to avoid bringing a church into disrepute is ever OK. ( this is or has been the standard in many, many so called Christian churches)

I was Christian for 40 years but when I started to really study the Bible, I realised how much of it is just horrific. I now veer between agnostic or atheist.

Like the US?

BashfulClam · 03/05/2025 15:34

The main non Christian value is have is that I don’t believe in god or Jesus or any of that utter tripe.

Silsatrip · 03/05/2025 15:35

If my son is lazy, I don't take him outside and stone him.
I wear mixed fabrics.

JustSawJohnny · 03/05/2025 15:36

Christianity, or any religion, don't get to claim values for themselves.

It is perfectly common for good people to live good lives with zero interaction from any organised religion.

That said, I've known a good few absolute shits who've been very religious. Abusive, drunk, aggressive, racist, arrogant bastards. Quite a few affairs. One paedophile. I could go on.

You don't need a holy book for a good life.

SleepyDormouse59 · 03/05/2025 15:36

Waitingfordoggo · 03/05/2025 12:52

I have never vocalised my ‘values’ but in a nutshell:

Don’t kill or hurt anyone, don’t steal anything

Don’t lie/deceive

Look out for the vulnerable: elderly/disabled/children, and be ready to defend or help if needed

Try not to annoy people or do things that infringe on others’ way of life/peace and quiet

Try to make conscientious decisions when buying things (aka don’t buy endless plastic crap on Amazon/Temu etc 😬)

Do what I can to minimise waste from my family home, and damage to the environment

And I know it’s a Christian one, but I like ‘do not worship false idols’. In the 21st Century, popular idols appear to be: money, beauty, cosmetic surgery and celebrities. Beyond earning enough money to live on, I try to ignore these idols as much as possible.

I don’t think my ‘values’ are unusual or special and I imagine the majority of the world’s inhabitants have the same or similar values.

I think you and I could be friends!

SleepyDormouse59 · 03/05/2025 15:37

Do no harm, take no shit, is my contribution.

Oblomov25 · 03/05/2025 15:37

Rather than Christian isn't most of just decent morals , eg do unto others...
