I get loads of romance scammers on Instagram every day. I delete or report all of them.

We are all susceptible to being scammed if caught at a vulnerable stage in our lives or physiologically manipulated. Don't be so quick to judge or think it will never happen to you.

LilDeVille · 02/05/2025 20:25

Of course they are. But maybe they’re that way because of unfulfilled needs along the way eg blinded by a need to be accepted/wanted/loved.

ReacherOMGyes · 02/05/2025 20:26

Lonely, and a bit vulnerable maybe. Idiots is a bit harsh.

You could call anyone that falls for any scam an idiot, just be glad you're so smart hey😏

Couldn’t agree more!

Pomegranatecarnage · 02/05/2025 20:27

Yes, I do. In every case I have heard of there have been huge red flags. I can say with confidence that it would never happen to me unless I suffered some form of cognitive decline or head injury.

Gnarab24 · 02/05/2025 20:27

Yes.
but the country is full of idiots

Are we though? I can't agree.

What a nasty thread.
Reported

Eldermillennialmum · 02/05/2025 20:28

I think calling people "idiots" is a bit harsh as you never know all the circumstances but there are some that make me go "Really??" such as the sweet bobby story but even then I wouldn't call her an idiot as I don't know her and I actually think what the scammer did to her was horrendous.

SpottedDonkey · 02/05/2025 20:31

People who fall for scammers are idiots, full stop. It really isn’t difficult to spot them when you’re a nasty, cynical old misanthrope like me.

Bhockminsister · 02/05/2025 20:32

I prefer to see them as vulnerable rather than idiots, but you crack on @YourAmplePlumPoster .

YourAmplePlumPoster · 02/05/2025 20:34

What a nasty thread, reported. Well go ahead, romance scamming is a big industry and I am drawing attention to it. I am on Instagram where if you post on a favourite fan page of star you like, there will be a deluge of so-called stars with a variation on the name like johnnydepp123 following you and pretending to be Johnny Depp.

Yes we are. Just because life hasn't created the circumstances for you yet doesn't mean it can't. People are scammed all the time romantically. Be it promises of a children in the future, I'll never cheat again, I'll marry you when the time is right, I'll stop drinking/gambling. Where there was never intention to carry through then you are being scammed. It's about belief in another person that is not warranted. The romance scam is at the extreme end but it's the same basis. Financial scams, business scams etc etc all down to being manipulated psychologically to believe in a person or idea.

Never2many · 02/05/2025 20:38

Testing123546 · 02/05/2025 20:26

Couldn’t agree more!

nope.

While I agree there is a scam for everyone, anyone who remortgages their house to give the money to someone they’ve never met who has been inexplicably detained at some border on his way back from paying for their brother’s life saving surgery which cost her her savings is an idiot.

The media is full of this stuff. These scams are commonly known.

The sweet bobby one - there’s no way she didn’t know this was a scam. Not a chance. Perhaps she stuck with it because she was living out a fantasy, but it was so unbelievable as to be true. And I lost all sympathy for her when she talked in the podcast about how she’d like to run over his wife.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 02/05/2025 20:38

You want to report someone who is warning women not to give their hard earned savings or money away to scammers because its "nasty." OK go ahead.

SuperTroopers · 02/05/2025 20:39

Yes, a lot of them are I think. Handsome pilots twenty years their junior falling hopelessly in love with them.

ffsfindmeausername · 02/05/2025 20:39

Yes I think the majority are and it's very obvious to the outsider that the men are far from genuine. but these women are often lonely and vulnerable and desperate for this last chance of love in their lives.
However there was one on a TV documentary not too long ago, a British couple where the man lead a completely double life even committed bigamy. the lengths this guy went to to con and defraud his second "wife" was astounding they even had a child together.

MaturingCheeseball · 02/05/2025 20:40

Rather than vulnerable, a lot of women seem very conceited. Why on earth would a 45-year-old handsome surgeon with ranch and private plane (saw this one on telly) fall madly in love with 65-year-old very ordinary woman? If someone is a similar age and level of attractiveness then maybe they could think a person was on the level - but these toyboys? Nah.

ItGhoul · 02/05/2025 20:40

They probably are idiots, in the sense of being naive and vulnerable. But in a civilised society we look after people who are naive and vulnerable and try to protect them, rather than leaving them to be exploited and laughed at.

CanYouTurnItDown · 02/05/2025 20:40

No I think the reporting was related to calling people idiots. There are ways and means of raising awareness.

Wolfpa · 02/05/2025 20:40

I don’t think they are idiots just lonely and desperate people would do anything for the chance of love.

lots of men fall for it too.

Why call them idiots then? You could have started a constructive thread, without the nasty name calling, but you did not do that.

yeesh · 02/05/2025 20:42

Just women?

Shatandfattered · 02/05/2025 20:42

No theyre not idiots. Theyre human beings craving to be special to someone or just to have the messages for company. Women who have kids to the wrong man arent idiots.... People who get dominated by friends/work/strangers... many other situations all stem from the basic instinct of wanting to feel alive and loved and as a result we people please, accept bullshit, compartmentalise things we know to be true but want to remain ignorant.
