Why are Kneecap not in prison?

1000 replies

BlossomBlanket · 29/04/2025 19:49

But Lucy Connelly is? Kneecap told people to kill their MPs. Why have they not been arrested.

(To be very clear, I do not condone violence of any kind towards anyone, I'm just asking as this seems like a double standard, can someone explain?)

The type of person who would ‘listen’ to kneecap, and be incited to take action by those words has no love for any politician. Kneecap wouldn’t have put the idea in their head, they had it already.

The person who would be potentially incited would not need kneecap to tell them to do it. They would do it anyway.

It’s a bit like Rage against the Machine telling everyone to “fuck the police” back in the day. It’s just words in a song designed to stir up the crowd, not to be taken literally.

Some sections of NI have been chanting FTP (I’m not spelling that one out), or the other side equivalent, for years. Words designed to inflame the crowd, not to be taken literally.

That was NWA

My MIL was a teacher in an integrated school and when kids were sent to her for saying/writing FTP/FTQ she always started by asking what it was about the queen / pope that they found so attractive.

“ social phenomenon of people who have grown up in England telling people in Northern Ireland all about their own history and that they should get over it.”
This is a made up social phenomenon .

Except you’re literally doing it right now. You’re telling me that what I have experienced myself is “made up”. How the fuck would you know the experience of being northern Irish and interacting with English people?

You’re supporting terrorism. The only genocide in Israel is that perpetrated by hamas.

you rely on the government to protect you against people like hamas and the IRA yet you support the terrorists because you think it’s cool and you know you’re safe thanks to the sacrifice of others. It’s pathetic

If the only genocide is Israel is perpetrated by Hamas, then the only genocide in Gaza is perpetrated by Israel, surely?

It's relevant when others raise the issue of 'the colonisers hat'.

People in glass houses cherrypick to suit their narrative.
.

Bet you’re the type that start talking about African slave traders when racist oppression is discussed aren’t you.

I’ve experienced enough lecturing from the English in my life to connect this very clearly with the colonial mindset. You can witter on about who did what in the name of Britain and meanwhile I will still know that the English just fucking love telling the Irish alllll about themselves.

Willyoujustbequiet · 30/04/2025 11:40

Traybake99 · 30/04/2025 11:12

What do they chant in support of the IRA? I know the Wolfe tones, Nigel farage, the Irish women's football team etc all love ooh ah up the ra but I haven't seen kneecap do that one. Given that SF/IRA are part of the establishment in west Belfast the hood culture that kneecap depict is as much against them as it is any other authority figure. You can. Also need include the catholic church in that, it isnt just as simple as republican=catholic=ira=hate all Brits.

Yes up the Ra and other slogans and references. Combine it with using the synonymous balaclava and a member of the band being called provo....

If it walks like a duck....

See this to me is the hallmark of a coward. If you’ve got an opinion, and you want to make it known, say it and stand by it. There’s loads of people that I actually really disagree with but I respect as they’re consistent and principled. Weeding out of things by backtracking, saying things that were very plain were ‘taken out of context’, making conflicting statements, and alluding to things while denying you are, to me is just a sign of a morally weak person.

'will still know that the English just fucking love telling the Irish alllll about themselves'

'The English'. What, everyone?

Well, I know that some Irish just fucking love telling anyone who'll listen all about the English. They need to learn to let go and move on and kneecap should change the record 🥱.

noaloneinkoln · 30/04/2025 11:48

The double standards here are obvious, and I say this as someone who identifies with the political left. Lucy Connolly’s actions were undeniably wrong and inexcusable, but her custodial sentence is disproportionate, especially when considered in the context of her personal tragedy and the loss of her child. It can’t be one rule for her and a different rule for Kneecap. This isn’t a case of failing to see the double standards it’s a decision by those on the left to ignore it for political convenience.

Really? That’s the level of argument you operate at? I’m embarrassed for you that you haven’t evolved beyond the ‘Your mum!’ ‘No,your mum!’ playground stage.

Not all men! Not all English people! Not all white people.

many. How’s that?

i would LOVE to “move on”, but it’s hard when we are still living in the consequences and trauma of civil war. And to add insult to injury MANY English people that have spoken to me over MANY years exhibit a tendency to britsplain Northern Ireland to me.

My bigoted assumption that what, because you resort to fallacies about the British empire when discussing Ireland that you will also resort to fallacies when discussing racist oppression? I don’t see what’s so ridiculous about that assumption.

You being Scottish and mixed race has NOTHING to do with what is being demonstrated on this thread - English people telling Irish people to just “get over it and move on” while demonstrating they have little understanding of the complex social and political situation.

You assumed the poster had a lofty and Colonialist view of racism. Who, embarrassingly for you, clarified she is mixed race and now you’re doubling down as you’ve expressed the ‘all brown people must think like me’ thing. By telling them being mixed race has ‘nothing to do with’ this thread despite the fact you brought race up Hmm

So what are we living under? Half a million dead, cities levelled, a debt we only finished paying back this side of the Millennium? Many of us with dead grandparents or great grandparents or relatives?

Or do you have the monopoly on this?

No, I assumed the poster invokes whataboutery fallacies when discussing politics of power. Turns out I was indeed wrong and they only invoke them for Ireland.

?! The monopoly on what? Pain? Trauma? Of course bloody not. I am saying that many English people talk about the troubles like it is the PAST when it is the present. It’s not about grandparents and great grandparents. It is about my generation and our parents generation. We’re still living it.

so of course I am going to correct people when they say that it is in the past and we should forget it: it’s not.

I don't recall them having an 'ooh ah up the ra' controversy, do you know where or when?
You know the IRA didn't actually run around wearing tricolour balaclavas?
I mean if the duck is anti-sectarian... If you say you are anti-sectarian, if you take action supporting kids who are from the other side of the sectarian divide, if you make a film that satirises po faced, authoritarian republicans... If it walks like that duck?

There's plenty of info out there regarding their use of the chants, slogans, references and imagery - black balaclavas too. You don't have to dive deep, it's very easy to find.

Anyone can say anything but if your words and actions directly contradict what you claim is your position then its totally meaningless. A bit like their faux outrage. It's gaslighting by any other name.

The active terrorism and gang warfare has stopped hasn't it? Many people live with the aftermath of conflict, not easy to move on but a stupid band shouting up the ra isn't helping anyone is it?

You’re living it because you haven’t decided between yourselves a way forward.

Britain did. We decided to strengthen ties with our EU neighbours (back then of course - thanks Brexit), and arrange things so further conflict would be less likely. And that included joining the EEC to further integrate and work with Germany on common goals. We didn’t decide to carry on battling out a grudge.
