Why are Kneecap not in prison?

1000 replies

BlossomBlanket · 29/04/2025 19:49

But Lucy Connelly is? Kneecap told people to kill their MPs. Why have they not been arrested.

(To be very clear, I do not condone violence of any kind towards anyone, I'm just asking as this seems like a double standard, can someone explain?)

You did it again… ‘complex and nuanced’ is clearly in reference to the political situation, but you reduce the discussion to focus on a singular action instead of addressing the question of whether the response to the act (reporting to counter terrorism unit) is a valid one, and if so is it applied fairly (previous posters have given examples of politicians / well known people saying similar outrageous things but not attracting police interest). And are interested parties manufacturing outrage to deflect from accusations of funding a genocide?

Thank you! That’s exactly what I was referring to when I said it was complex and nuanced.

Once upon a Time in Northern Ireland (the BBC documentary series) really opened my eyes up to how the general rhetoric of ‘good vs evil’ and ‘you must pick a side’ is really not helpful.

I came away from watching that (and I know it doesn’t make me an expert - I am a Brit and I wanted to learn more) feeling both sympathy AND anger for both sides, whilst also understanding how Britain managed to bring about the circumstances that led to the troubles in the centuries prior to the conflict.
The point I was trying to make is that people so often pick a side in these things without even wanting to understand the other side and it just causes further divide.

It was dialogue that brought about the start of (albeit, a precarious) peace in NI. Shouting ‘terrorist sympathiser’ at the opposing side is not helpful.

I think the sarcasm was lost there 😂

Yup it was, didn't expect to find NWA fans on mumsnet so assumed they were being serious 😂

Don’t worry, I had to read it twice myself to make sure 😉

@slamdunk66
Israeli flags have been flying in loyalist areas for over 20 years.

Shouting ‘Up Hamas” and telling people to kill their MPs is not going to help maintain that precarious peace .

No and neither will investigating people from one community for their terrorist rhetoric and not the oher. This is what I mean by being equal in the implementation of the law or else you're opening a can of worms ...

Way to miss my entire point and concentrate on one thing I said, and make it not relevant to why I was saying it.

I accept this to a point ..
But I really don’t see how anyone can reasonably object to the criticism this group has faced. ( if you think others should also face censure you probably have a good point)

I am struggling to think of the equivilant to Kneecap from the other community to be investigated?

EasternStandard · 01/05/2025 19:18

Headlines now with Kneecap to be investigated by counter terrorism police.

So don’t respond to my post then. The conversation evolves, as it always does, and that’s fine. Don’t twist what everyone posts to being something specifically about Kneecap.

I don’t disagree that they ain’t exactly helping the precarious situation there. But I was trying to discuss the wider implications of shutting down debate and not allowing respectful discourse around all complex topics - whether it be NI, or Israel/Palestine

Nunaluna · 01/05/2025 19:21

I think they’re cowards who should stand by their beliefs and stop trying to worm off the hook with all the bollocks about context and artistic expression. If you’re that passionate about a cause, why wouldn’t you stand by it?

Wonderberry · 01/05/2025 16:52

Are we reading the same thread? There are many here who have sympathised with Hamas. I wish that wasn't the case. Are you ready to condemn them?

Hi can you show me where please? It’s a bit of a rich claim

Yes which seems ott but government have to decide if words do incite hate and violence or not. It just cannot be one rule for Connolly's comment and another for these prats.

I mean, several people on the opposite side to kneecap regarding the war in Gaza HAVE been investigated AND have had warrants for their arrest issued. By the ICC. Netanyahu and Gallant. (As well as Hamas leaders which is well deserved also) so it’s not a great struggle to think of the equivalent.

Many members of the IDF, Israeli politicians and West Bank settlers can be clearly seen in various kinds of footage inciting hatred, wishing death on Palestinians and expressing a desire to wipe them off the map.

Sure, none of them are rappers though.

I think I’m allowed to bring the conversation back to the thread title when it goes off topic ?….

But Israel and hamas are in a conflict they of course are going to say unpleasant things about each other.

We are talking about people who have nothing to do with it using their platform as 'entertainers' to spout incendiary crap which could incite hatred and violence.

Of course you’re ‘allowed’ to.
I am also allowed to tell you that you seem to have disregarded everything else I said and that it makes the discourse disjointed

Well, not rappers, but, if you’re talking about threatening behaviour towards politicians, you do get this every year -

That is unarguably also abhorrent ( and illegal)

I don’t think the kneecap defenders have a leg to stand on

Kneecapped defenders wouldnt either 😛
