My 11 yr old yr 7 son has been issued an after school detention for disrespecting a new teacher.

We never had them at my high school and wanted to know what you all thought of them.

Myself, I'm currently at whits end with him calling me a fucking bitch and pushing me etc (another thread for another day) so I'm hoping this might give him a bit of a shock.

Again: I am giving him punishments. It's not working.

Also to whoever said grow a back bone and stand up to him, he is physically strong and I e had a multitude of bruises when I do so it's not really a helpful comment.

If he's assaulted you you need to ring the police

You are bringing up a vile bully and he needs to learn it's not right

I had detentions (only two!) in the 60's, and for similar minor infringements that parents complain about today (not having needlework kit for lesson, and badly finished homework.) My parents were not given advanced warning, but it was recorded on my school report. State grammar school; it had not been a possibility at state primary school. On the other hand, it was perfectly possible at primary school to get slapped, and the boys could be caned in really serious cases. Although I was on the right side of that deal as a girl, I thought that was unfair even back then. At my girls' grammar school, corporal punishment was never used.
At my last school (independent, Yrs 3 - 13) after-school detention was a possible sanction, luckily most got the message before it got to that stage. From Year 7 onwards, Saturday morning was another possibility; happened even more rarely, as by this stage, most miscreants had worked out that they were cruising for a bruising..... parents were given advance warning, and many other tactics and consultations would have been tried before this stage was reached.
So it's nothing new.
