You are given the power to make three things illegal. What would you choose?

I know people will post silly things that irritate them but think seriously. What three things would you make completely illegal right now?
Here's mine:

  1. The right to buy your council house
  2. Owning more than one property.
  3. Not keeping your cat contained in your own home. With hefty fines if it is caught killing any wildlife.

Ooh, how to keep it to just three...

  • misogyny in speech. I know this is difficult but we have to start somewhere. It should be as socially unacceptable to publicly slag off women as a sex as it is to condone drink driving.
  • ban electric scooters from public roads and pavements, scarily dangerous.
  • All electronic devices on silent or headphones obligatory when using in public.

  1. cycling in groups of more than 2 unless accompanying children.
  2. electric bikes and scooters.
  3. XL bullies and their “pocket” counterparts.
ChrisS36 · 27/04/2025 13:47

Tobacco.

TheHappyBug · 27/04/2025 14:08

Smoking instant jail time for anyone caught.

Not paying for children, dna tests at birth and automatic deductions from salary. Not sure how that works for self employed but it’s a start.

Parent of bullies risk jail, that should be a deterrent or at least an incentive for parents to crack down.

Hitchinkitchen · 27/04/2025 14:09

I’d like to ban the following for men -

1 Walking around topless in warm weather
2 Sitting with legs wide open
3 Swearing and any inconsiderate behaviour in front of women

My husband has never done 1 and 2 but he has effed in front of me at times.

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/04/2025 14:17

  1. Watching videos / listening to music in public without headphones.
  2. Parents not “parenting” children in public.
  3. Parking in a parent and child bay without a child.

I'd add parking in a disabled bay when not disabled. Should be punishable by death.

  1. Because it takes it off the social housing market forever and its not fair. We need social housing to be there for people that need it, as a safety net, not for people to buy and even make a profit from. Several people I know have sold theirs for market value when they bought it for a ridiculously cheap price, downsized and pocketed the huge profit. Why should people be allowed to walk away with £100-200k while there are homeless families who need that house? A house given to them when they needed it?
I also have strong opinions about people staying in homes they no longer need. Once you're earning above a certain threshold, you should be expected to move out. Empty besters living in 3 bed homes needed by families should be offered smaller houses and kicked to the curb if they refuse them.
  1. Yes.
  2. No, not necessarily, just keep them contained in your own land. I don't have any suggestions, I don't have a cat. That's the responsibility of cat owners to figure out. Just as I have to with my dog.

Agree with all, three OP.

I would add:

Unsolicited emails/phone calls and letters. Leave. Me. Alone.

Non-disclosure agreements

Smoking/vaping in public places. If I had to choose one, I'd bann vaping. It's so much worse than smoking.

TroysMammy · 27/04/2025 15:41

@SpringSunshineanddaffodils I agree with your reasoning for number 2. My parent's widowed neighbour of 40 years who must be in his late 60s early 70s, reasonably active although not worked for years, as was a carer for late disabled partner) lives in a 3 bed, 2 reception room council property (so potentially 4 bedrooms) which had an extension for a wet room and an outside wheelchair lift to the pavement and he lives on his own. It's ridiculous but my parents say "better the devil you know"!

JulyJourney · 27/04/2025 15:43

Dahliasrule · 27/04/2025 10:09

i’m interested in number 3. Can you explain why this is bad? Genuine question.

If you keep sheep fenced in for grazing, natural habitats can regenerate on higher ground. Much better for the environment. I'm not against sheep farming or people owning cats but farming and pet ownership have huge impacts on natural habitats and people need to think about that.
If I could ban a fourth thing banned it would be disposable coffee cups, even biodegradable ones. They're so unnecessary. Cafes can use regular cups and if you really have to have coffee on the go you should use a reusable cup or flask.

  • Why should buying your council house be illegal ? My mother did this after 16 years as a council tennant, she bought her small 2 bed terrace her mortgage repayments were less than her council rent, she was a single parent and it lifted our family out of poverty and gave her security.*

Because the stock of housing wasn't replenished. It made individuals richer but wasn't good for society as a whole. I don't think social housing should have been used to make people richer.

To make poor people richer, or just not desperate for their entire lives.

The money from the sale of council houses should have been ringfenced to build more rather than fund tax cuts for the wealthy. But the wealthy just can't keep their greedy hands off.

Fuck the rich, they should stick their second homes up their arses.

I love seeing people get irate about daft things that will NEVER change. Cats will always be allowed outside. So keep being bothered about it OP, keep releasing that cortisol into your body over pointless stuff and see where it gets you in life..

I will keep being bothered about it, and I will keep speaking out about it, because I give a shit about the damage they do.
I'm not some crazy minority either, lots of experts agree with me, including David Attenborough.
Maybe it will never change, human nature does tend to be selfish and self serving after all, so most people will, like you, continue to not give a shit because it suits them but that won't stop me from speaking against something that's not right.

I'd send people who refuse to acknowledge that the world's climate has been changing since the planet was formed to the gulag. With especially poor treatment and food for those arrogant enough to think that humans can do anything to stop the climate from continuing to change.

Oh dear. Proved my point. Not really looked at this properly have you.
