You are given the power to make three things illegal. What would you choose?

I know people will post silly things that irritate them but think seriously. What three things would you make completely illegal right now?
Here's mine:

  1. The right to buy your council house
  2. Owning more than one property.
  3. Not keeping your cat contained in your own home. With hefty fines if it is caught killing any wildlife.

🤣🤣. Promise I hadn’t read the post above when I posted mine

getahhtmapub · 27/04/2025 08:50

Disposable nappies
Owning more than one house
Anything audible emanating from a device in a public place.

SwanOfThoseThings · 27/04/2025 08:50

Paying anyone senior in a company/organisation more than 10 x the wage of the most junior employee

Not having a method of paying by cash for any goods/services bought in person, e.g. parking.

Playing music/watching things with sound in any public place without headphones (unless you are officially the entertainment for the space.

jetlag92 · 27/04/2025 08:51
  1. tattoos
  2. watching videos in public without headphones
  3. ownership of dogs by anyone with a criminal record
coldscottishmum · 27/04/2025 08:51
  1. Having a pet dog who needs walked when you work FT, leaving them home all day and not caring for their basic needs (walks, excersize, training etc)
  2. People who have just passed their driving test, carrying multiple passengers. I believe all new drivers (young and older) should he fitted with Dash Cam and a black box which should be made compulsory to submit to their insurance.
  3. Feeding cats which do not belong to you but are roaming. I have 3 who wonder, one comes back smelling of perfume and being sick (given food when he has a grain allergy). By all means absolutely feel free to clap the cats and give them some love if you see them, but for god sake please don’t feed them!!!

Smoking

Social media before 16

Misogyny would be added to the list of aggravating factors for crime

GymBergerac · 27/04/2025 08:52

Posting goady threads on social media 😉

BusySittingDown · 27/04/2025 08:54
  1. Smoking.
  2. Vaping.
  3. Cycling/being on a scooter.

The last one is a joke. Kinda.

They're always in the way! When you're on the pavement - nearly get mowed down by cyclists, when you're in the car - get held up by cyclists! Bugger off! 😩

The first two can be just in public. I don't care what people do in the privacy of their own homes, I don't want to be inhaling your sickly fumes, thank you very much! Plus, you look fucking stupid.

Number three is not very serious at all OP. What about wild cats? Strays? You are aware that "wildlife" includes several predatory carnivores?

I am deadly serious on number 3.

I have no idea why you are bringing up strays. I said "your cat" as in owned cats. I am very clearly not talking about strays.

Of course there are several naturally occuring wildlife predators. They are a complelty different kettle of fish though, aren't they?

Domestic cats are being cared for and fed by humans, they have their medical needs met. This means they occur in FAR greater numbers than they would occur naturally, and have a completely unfair advantage over native wildlife. Plus, they kill for fun, rarely for food. They are endangering birds, hedgehogs and many other rodents. They are a serious problem.

  1. Eating in the theatre
  2. Making any noise at all in the Quiet Coach
  3. Use of mobile phones at concerts, performances and sports events

Enabling people to buy council properties builds communities, otherwise you have a revolving door, many times with antisocial behaviour.
This would not benefit society.

The government should be building consistently as the population grows.

Owning more than one property, is ridiculous, if people have the money, it is their right.

As are the cat rules.

I would change the law making it mandatory for absent parents to pay child maintenance or go to jail.

20 year minimum sentence for rape.

Pedophiles are castrated.

MiddleClassProblem · 27/04/2025 08:55

I would bring in dog licences so to own a dog you would have to get a dog owning license with other versions for dog sitters/walkers, breeding and additional courses for certain breeds like guarding breeds.

Even the most well meaning and caring owners sometimes have no idea about basic dog behaviour and care.

Middlechild3 · 27/04/2025 08:55

Mobile phones, social media, most internet access.

Minesril · 27/04/2025 08:57

Chewing gum

Laptops in any public places

Private landlords.

  1. Dog owners calling themselves parents
  2. People who don’t speak Spanish doing the Catalan lisp when pronouncing words like chorizo or Barcelona
  3. People who post about parking, traffic, and the new flats being built on local Facebook groups

Let's just build and build and build until we have no green land left and in the meantime let the cats run around killing all the native wildlife in sight.
What a wonderful future world you paint a picture of.

Circumcision for non-medical reasons.

Dogs in indoor public spaces (cafes, shops, restaurants etc), with the obvious exception of assistance dogs. I’d also remove the XL bully exemption certificate thing, and have a mass cull.

Smoking.

I stand by 1 & 3, I’m aware 2 may make me a little intolerant, and to be clear I don’t view a dog indoors as on the same level as cutting off bits of a baby boy’s genitals.

Carrotop · 27/04/2025 08:58

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 27/04/2025 08:49

  1. Dogs in Restaurants
  2. Dogs in shops
  3. Dogs on public Transport

(Assistance dogs - real ones- allowed)

This. Or at the very least I’d say they need to be on a (non-retractable) leash and out of the way limited to certain well sign posted areas in restaurants and trains.

Had a friend making his way through a busy pub in Glasgow that was bitten by a dog that was probably overwhelmed. As it was quite busy he didn’t even see it until he felt the bite. The owner did the usual “they’ve never did that before” crap

Not been bitten myself but I have been approached /ran at by dogs in trains, cafes, parks etc which has made me nervous. Sometimes they seemed friendly, others not. I don’t want to take the risk.

I asked one woman in a train to keep her dog away from me as it kept coming into my seat area and she said ok but then went back to looking at her phone and the dog came back. It was on a long leash - I find those extendable long leases almost useless.

She had the cheek to look offended when I finally moved to another carriage. Even had to ask her to move her dog out the way as I was leaving as it was standing in the aisle by this point. Not the dogs fault of course it’s an animal but ugh too many stupid owners
in the Uk.

  • Porn access of any kind without inputting a credit card number
  • smart phones for under 18s
  • dog ownership without a licence. The licence fee would pay for dog wardens.
Sesma · 27/04/2025 08:59

Mobile phones at events
Dogs on extending leads
Smoking and vaping outside in places where people eat

iseethembloom · 27/04/2025 08:59

I love yours, @op

number three is NOT odd, despite what previous posters have said.

user1471538275 · 27/04/2025 08:59

Understanding that illegal means very little when enforcement cannot be carried out, my choices are :

  1. Pets - working animals only (which includes legal assistance animals only)
  2. Salaries above 20 x full time minimum wage (oh no. think of the footballers!)
  3. Being able to sue the NHS as a civil case. If it constitutes criminal negligence then the police can be involved. Otherwise you should sign a waiver before treatment because mistakes happen and the current level of fear over litigation is leading to massive overtreatment/testing and huge costs all round.
VanCleefArpels · 27/04/2025 09:00

Smoking and vaping

playing music/games/phone calls out loud on public transport

Council Houses being let without carpets, curtains and white goods

Do people who need to sneeze have to sprint (silently) down the carriage to sneeze in the vestibule? I agree they should actually enforce quiet carriages, rather than just stick a sticker on the window and then ignore it.

Banning eating in theatres would probably make tickets prices shoot up as they probably make a lot of money from food/drink sales.

Why are you still letting them wonder around when you know its harming their health?
Have you any idea at all where they go and what they do?
