To think that Spanish is a ridiculous language?

Ammadam · 25/04/2025 09:58

Sorry to any spanish speakers. But I just wanted a mimor moan.

I've lived in France and Italy before. I thought the French and Italian languages were totally fine. They make sense. I became quite good at speaking Italian with the locals.

I'm in Spain on holiday. I've come to Spain many times on holiday, and so I'm always trying to learn Spanish a bit.

It's just such a crazy language.

Why is every word so long. Why are there so many changes for every word. Why does it sound like babble. Add to that, it's spoken extremely fast. Apparently it's the second fastest spoken language.

I was actually just talking about this to some Spanish people at a group here. They agreed that it's a very difficult language.

They said that everything is said in a much longer way than in English.

For example "Star wars" in Spanish, is "la guerra de galactica"

I agree it’s a fast language, especially as a learner, when any second language spoken by a native speaker sounds speedy. But I studied Spanish, French and Welsh in school, continuing with Spanish until the end of my first year in university, and found Spanish by far the easiest. Once you know the phonemes, it’s a pretty easy language to pronounce. The phrase ‘Lo siento, más despacio, por favour’ was one of the first we were taught so that we could ask a speaker to slow down. I’ve forgotten so much now I’m older but we visit family in Spain most years and I still love reading it and using what I have left. I’m encouraging my youngest to keep studying it for GCSE.

How rude. It's not ridiculous, it's different.

I'm having lots of fun doing Spanish on Duo Lingo, I find it quite an enjoyable language to speak. Though I'm not entirely sure how knowing 'the boy is eating an apple' in Spanish will help me on holiday there!

You're just lacking in imagination. I am absolutely determined to work "Mein schnecke kommt aus Osterreich" (my snail is from Austria) into conversation at some point during our holiday in Germany this year.

"Nah then, lets just ave a cuppa and sort it ahhht!"

Probably because in response to her saying she didn’t call Spanish ridiculous - I pointed out the title to her thread!

I’m loving this aspect of the thread, as someone who’s always been terribly bored by Star Wars. But no more, now that I will think of it as Shiny Fighty, Parade of the Furries etc.

Also - leave the Star Wars argument, both of you. It’s not going to be resolved and you’ll just get wound up.

It has been resolved. It was a simple matter of easily checkable facts. The OP was wrong. Happy to help.

Oh please do try, and report back! (Should you have reason to write it down again, all German nouns start with capital letters so ‘Meine Schnecke….’ )

You get extra points if you manange to include any of these

Oh my God! This is unreal

It's amazing how some posters read things wrong and then completely make things ip.

I never said that I didn't say spanish was ridiculous. It's the title of my thread . Of course I said it.

I said that I didn't say what the star wars movie title in Spanish is. I said that someone else told me that.

You then came on and completely misunderstood.

Apparently you thought that I wrote that didn't say spanish was ridiculous? I never wrote that anywhere.

Read the whole thread instead of picking up bits and pieces, and then misunderstanding everything

In Cornwall, Star Wars is locally known as "Stargazy Scat Up", and the Ewoks are all from Newlyn. The Death Star is represented by the Chiverton Cross roundabout.

But anyhoo....now that all the MN Spanish and the languages of Spain experts are gathered together, I have a question. I have a treasured bag for life that I picked up from Eroski in Bilbao last year. It says "Es bueno que sia de aqui" - which I assume is "It's good to be from here", but it also says it in 3 other languages. One is obviously Basque- "Hemengoa izatea ona da"- definitely from its own galaxy, that one. The other two say "E bon que sexa de aqui" and "Es bo que sigui d'aqui". I've always assumed that one of those is Catalan- although I'm not sure which- but then what's the other? Someone suggested Aragonese to me, but I'm now pondering Gallego....?

Rewis · 25/04/2025 11:41

According to Rosetta stone, Spanish and English are both category I languages (easiest to learn)

Let me help you with that.

You mean "the Spanish person that said it was wrong".

I didn't say it.

Thought it was “Nah sithee here Luke”

ginasevern · 25/04/2025 11:45

I must admit, I'm rather surprised you find Spanish so difficult if you already have a good grasp of French and Italian. I think you made a mistake quoting the "Star Wars" title because it is just a literal translation of, well, Star Wars and not wildly different from French or Italian.

In my opinion, Italian speakers speak Italian at a slower pace, than Spanish speakers .

So I could understand everything that they said to me in Italy.

In Spain, the Spanish is very fast and it's also so different per region

Some Spanish people in malaga told me that they can't understand Spanish speakers in murcia,

as murcians chop the words into different words altogether.

Are these levels a real thing or your personal assessment. (Just curious, not trying to pick a fight!)

Well, when i was at Uni there was a classification, for which I can´t remember the name annoyingly, but from the point of view of English speakers. The U.S. department of State uses something similar.
Romance languages were in level 1, (except ) French, Greek and Russian level 2, Arabic and Chinese level 3 and Japanese and Korean level 4. But then, the difficulty of a language also depends on what your native tongue is, what previous languages you have learned, your understanding of grammar. It is complex. But it is a rough guide I guess.

I think in order you have Basque, Gallego and Catalan although I could be wrong. Deffo the first one is Basque.

Oh yikes! 😱 Actually, having an interest in WW2 history, we may well visit one or two Dokumentationstazion Reichsparteitgelanden, but I can see myself abruptly slipping back into English if I have to ask for directions!

DD gets so irritated when I take this piss:

tomorrow morning is "manana por la manana". I do see what you are getting at OP. But still think it is easier than French and totally believe the Star Wars from a local.
