To think that Spanish is a ridiculous language?

Sorry to any spanish speakers. But I just wanted a mimor moan.

I've lived in France and Italy before. I thought the French and Italian languages were totally fine. They make sense. I became quite good at speaking Italian with the locals.

I'm in Spain on holiday. I've come to Spain many times on holiday, and so I'm always trying to learn Spanish a bit.

It's just such a crazy language.

Why is every word so long. Why are there so many changes for every word. Why does it sound like babble. Add to that, it's spoken extremely fast. Apparently it's the second fastest spoken language.

I was actually just talking about this to some Spanish people at a group here. They agreed that it's a very difficult language.

They said that everything is said in a much longer way than in English.

For example "Star wars" in Spanish, is "la guerra de galactica"

Perhaps, although with the number of grammatical errors you see / hear from native English speakers I wouldn’t be completely sure about that.

I’m imagining a parallel thread on Spanish social media where someone’s insisting that “would of” is correct, as a native English speaker told them so.

'would of' is an idiomatic form or possibly a dialect form - but incorrect in Standard English, of course.

Here in Chipping Norton us locals call Star Wars "Shiny Fighty", and it was marketed as such in our neighbourhood.

Interestingly, Star Wars is one of the few movies that was given a different name in every town in the world, with an individualized publicity campaign, different actors, and so on. For example, our version had Bobby Davro playing Luke Skywalker, while Julie Christie was Darth Vader.

(*Some of the above may be untrue.)

Here in Ireland it’s called ‘Shoot’em Up on Skellig Michael’. Another factoid of dubious veracity from a native for the OP.

Im not wrong as i didnt say it. I repeated what i was told.

I think its you who needs the camomile tea for your anger issues pet.

Don’t ever attempt to call a Spanish person “pet” (mascota). They’ll look at you as if you just took part in a Parade of the Furries.

Clafoutie · 25/04/2025 11:11

SusieSheepie · 25/04/2025 11:03

I think people are getting irate at you refusing to believe a correction, even when given evidence. Like insisting it's what it's said on Wikipedia, and then screen shoting a risky different website which isn't about the film title as evidence.

People keep saying it because you keep arguing. Just hold your hands up and say you're wrong!

Also the OP quoted it as an example, so presumably believed it to be correct. Trying to side-step that now by saying ‘somebody else said it’ is just bonkers! See also criticising other posters for making an issue about something when the OP themselves brought it up in the first place 😯

I think this a ridiculous post.

Mrsdyna · 25/04/2025 11:11

I'm actually learning Spanish with speakers from several different countries and we all agree that Spanish is particularly ridiculous. It's like they thought that people cannot understand context at all so every eventuality needs to be accounted for.

Basque certainly isnt a dialect of Spanish - however, whatever word they use in Spanish when talking about it that you are rendering as dialect, may have different shades of meaning from "dialect" in English. What word do they use?

Edited

Dialect.I find it crazy also.
As I said: My DD is doing uni entrance exams here. Is Spanish.

Valenciano is more like French to my mind.

ExH is from Madrid and cannot speak a word.

Goodness that’s made me laugh a lot.

Im in Essex and here it was called Sky Barney Innit? Joey Essex was Luke and Denise Van Outen voiced Chewbacca.

No - I’m calm.

Your posts are getting more and more irate and argumentative.

You are rude and now on the defensive as so many people are disagreeing with you or now taking the piss, which you deserve

Epidote · 25/04/2025 11:13

Try to learn some Chinese, Korean or Japanese to see a difficult language for a western person.
Spanish speaker here, I don't see the faff about it. Pretty straightforward language in my Spanish opinion.

BIWI · 25/04/2025 11:14

Did you join Mumsnet just to post this punto bastante tonta @Ammadam?

Or just namechange? (Not surprised if you did)

I think Spanish is easier to learn than French.

Agree. I found French almost impossible when I was at school. I did Spanish at evening class a few years ago and it made far more sense.

Valencian people don’t use the word dialect.

The Uni exam is literally titled “Valencià: llengua i lliteratura”. Language and literature.

Try writing on that paper that it’s a dialect, as part of your essay. I’d love to see how they mark that!

If people are agreeing with you then that is also based possibly on bad language learning techniques or experience.

Or just being polite and not wishing to disagree.

Sorry to say this, OP, but you are not coming across very well

Native Spanish (and a “dialect”) speaker here and I’m afraid this is a case of pulling someone’s leg

BitOutOfPractice · 25/04/2025 11:17

They’re not reading the thread @Ammadam no because you are rude, argumentative, aggressive and wrong.

We are making our own fun now.

AusBoundDD · 25/04/2025 11:17

I did both Spanish and French right up to A level, as did DD - both of us agree that Spanish is much simpler than French! No irregular verbs to worry about

I will however admit though that we do both prefer French as a language.

English is so much easier than Spanish. There are much less word changes.

For example in English , it's

I go
You go
He goes
She goes
We go
They go

In Spanish it's

Yo voy
Tu vas
El va
Ella va
Nosotros vamos
Ellos van ( they for males)
Ellas van ( they for females)

Edited

You have actually chosen as your example one of the most difficult verbs in Spanish. "Ir" to go, uses two different latin verbs to form its tenses. The present tense uses one, past tenses another. That´s why you have voy and fui. It is highly irregular. Tell English is easy to all the poor sods who have to learn phrasal verbs in English.
