To ask what the most BRILLIANT advice/suggestion you've seen on here is?

Inspired by the other thread with a similar title!

Maybe not advice/suggestion as such, but I wouldn't have got my Mirena coil had I not been persuaded by the balance of views on here and enough positive feedback that it could work out well. It has been lifechanging, I wish I had done it 20 years ago, I could have avoided years of pain.

My new one is tretinoin. It's only been a few weeks but I already think I will be using this for the rest of my life. Why have I spent so much money on expensive and less efficacious creams?

Without wanting to control the direction of the thread, I wasn't thinking of LTB type advice. More immediately implementable things that someone could try today! (Although MN has definitely educated me in matters such as 'the script', narcissism, emotional abuse, and trans/gender critical matters!)

Sure, but the guidance on this changed around 15ish years ago due to some fatalities, so @AFrogInABog was quite right to point this out. If I'd popped up recommending tummy sleeping and cot bumpers I would hope someone would point out they are no longer recommended for safety too.

Ah that makes sense, my "babies" are now 16!

I did this 14 years ago, but then I also didn't stick strictly to the advice re when to do weaning (which has since been changed to earlier due to increase in allergy rates) - much of the weaning and other advice comes form the WHO which is based on cases in developing countries so not very applicable here.

In any case, the risks from potential scalding and lack of nutrients is probably much greater - I understand the FDA recommends against it - see here: chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://www.infantnutritioncouncil.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/preparation-of-infant-formula-and-safety-around-70-degrees.pdf

I was just saying we didn't have any issues, and as I said, I've never been a steriliser of things etc especially once babies are old enough to touch things. Each to their own.

This is miraculous for removing sticky labels. Expensive, I suppose, but I bought it when my brother used his to remove a label for me and it was SO EFFECTIVE - and my tin has lasted forever.

So many - like pp I often add +mumsnet when I Google things. Gift ideas, elderly parent stuff, health stuff, clothes ....

Soap/shower gel I mentioned to my occasionally smelly teen when they were about to go camping with 5 others in one small tent. They took it on board (as did friends) and haven't been smelly since.

Also the why is powder better than washing liquid. Sometimes the right answer is hidden in a long thread of wrongness tho!

Never did find the answer to dd not sleeping!

Following a thread I had on here about how my daft DH had managed to forget to empty the safe in our hotel in Crete when we were on holiday last year, leaving behind our passports, my purse and my jewellery, someone suggested putting one of the shoes we would be travelling home in in the safe. We are going back to the same hotel this summer and I will be doing this. I never want to go through stress like that again! It took two weeks to get my jewellery home but luckily I did due to our fabulous hotel.

How did you get home with no passports etc then? Is this for real?

I went to a packed nightclub wearing pristine extremely pale light grey suede shoes, by 3 o’clock in the morning, they had been stepped on countless times, at least 4 rum and cokes spilt on them, drunk folk dancing without coordination, including me!

Now the toes are deep black and the dirt and foot marks are caked it because they are were soaked.

I am quite put put, I loved them and I only got to wear them a small handful of times… I paid 25 quid for them at a market, is it worth me buying expensive suede cleaning equipment and the energy and frustration of cleaning them,,, would they even go back to their original colour?

Yes I know, fucking idiot for going clubbing and a moron for wearing those shoes.

I once got into a bar with flip flops, door people didn’t spot it as otherwise I was well dressed, then the security inside nearly kicked me out! Also it was summer.
By the end of the evening some bloke and step pend on me and one nearly broke and I had to drag it behind me to get to the taxi stand. I suppose that’s the reason of no flip flops rule.

It’s not worth wearing nice shoes to busy places, I don’t have enough money to replace them so frequently. But then you end up never wearing your nice shoes!

What do people do?

I had a pair of light suede boots that I loved so much. But they were terrible to keep clean.

I found once they got heavily marked, nothing is really going to get them back to pristine.

You could go spend a bit on all the cleaning items you need, foam and protectant spray and the brush or, you can get suede dye and dye them a darker colour. You get sprays so it's not too tricky.

I stick to normal leather now.

@DownyEmerald. Me too - everytime

Another vote for Mounjaro. Just finished my first 2 pens (including the 5th dose) and have lost 3 stone already. It's life changing to feel full, and not have the urge to binge on crap food.

Zofora, absolutely love that stuff and buy it in bulk. I use it for rinsing out the bid and mopping the toilet floors. I think I’m going to do that right now, although I was delaying it for later, the scent makes me happy and I feel like I’m making a happy home.

I put the tiniest drop in my essential oil burner - with water, and the smell lingers all day.

I put a drop on a bit of kitchen paper (Zoflora) and put it in the kitchen bin under the bin bag and it helps to stop the bin smelling. I LOVE Zoflora and have become quite a connisseur of the various smells.

If you make sure that the sugar is properly melted then your flapjacks won't stick to the pan. I used to have to chisel my flapjacks out in crumb-format until a friend told me I was trying to hurry the procedure and not giving the sugar time to dissolve...

Oh, and another one - when flying long distance, stick a knicker liner inside your pants. Take it out when you arrive at your destination and it's like wearing clean knickers without having to go to all the faff of changing your pants in an aeroplane toilet. I often fly to Australia and hate the feeling of being all grungy after 24 hours flying, Knowing I'm wearing clean pants when I get off makes me feel better!

Can confirm the knicker liner thing.
(And have copied the flapjack recipe as mine are always a disaster!)

Not my circus, not my monkeys.

And "let them". So powerful.

Another knickers one.

Always buy one size up from your usual size.

I tried this. Yes I am thanking those here who told me to.

That anal fissure non healing is as a result of a fungal infection. Four weeks of Nizoral shampoo had it healing up after years and $$$$ spent.

Did you just use it on your scalp?

For the not sleeping one, has she tried magnesium supplements? I think that was another great tip I picked up from mumsnet.

Does anyone have any tips for removing leftover sticky residue (from labels) off plastic please? 🤞🏼

WD40 - works for me every time.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 24/04/2025 17:41

My sock one I think came from MN - I bulk buy matching socks. Dd2 has white socks with grippy bits, DH has black socks and I have grey socks. We never get them mixed up. Occasional "gift socks" (best dad etc) generally fall apart anyway. This saves me pairing odd socks. Life is too short!

It's the crap men come out with when they're deliberately sabotaging their relationship. Invariably they turn out to be cheats. It involves much lying, gaslighting, emotional manipulation, etc

It usually starts with "I love you but I'm not in love with you"... followed by "I don't know what I want" usually resulting in them going off with an OW.

I read about it long after my divorce but it opened my eyes and helped me get some closure!

Thanks for the tip and everyone else who commented. I went with the easiest option first with something I already had in. A spray of elbow grease left for 2mins and it's gone 😊

Those pins to keep a king sized duvet in place inside the cover.

To use a spoon not a knife to remove avocado stones and also the flesh from the skin rather than trying to peel it. Saved me from many middle class injuries since I found that one as I am clumsy and on blood thinners.

What pins?? <<<goes off to google>>>

Dd dyed her natural coloured Ugg boots in fabric dylon when they got stained & marked and brushed them up afterwards with a suede brush. They went a really nice dark grey colour. I was sceptical but it worked.

This is the one I got:
LawnMaster VBRM16 Drop and Mow... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0B6G4K1M5?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

It’s got a battery that you charge and then get about 4 hours mowing. I just charge the battery and put it on the lawn and it mows randomly all around. I had a swing chair on the lawn but just made sure mower could get under the sides and around the legs. It senses edge of lawn and goes back inwards. The way these robot mowers work is that they chop a bit of the top of the grass and it just drops on the lawn. You don’t need to collect and dispose of it. Just put the mower on the lawn every week or so during season and it keeps it at whatever length you choose.

I hope this helps. Mine is a smallish one. But really does the job on a medium sized lawn.
