Inspired by the other thread with a similar title!

Maybe not advice/suggestion as such, but I wouldn't have got my Mirena coil had I not been persuaded by the balance of views on here and enough positive feedback that it could work out well. It has been lifechanging, I wish I had done it 20 years ago, I could have avoided years of pain.

My new one is tretinoin. It's only been a few weeks but I already think I will be using this for the rest of my life. Why have I spent so much money on expensive and less efficacious creams?

Without wanting to control the direction of the thread, I wasn't thinking of LTB type advice. More immediately implementable things that someone could try today! (Although MN has definitely educated me in matters such as 'the script', narcissism, emotional abuse, and trans/gender critical matters!)

What does that mean?

Hang the tops from the bottom hem, and the bottoms from the waist band.

Micellar water is supposed to be a good way to clean suede - I would start with trying to brush off as much dirt as possible (I have a little suede brush with wire bristles on 1 side, plastic on the other and a rubbery bit on the side) and then apply the micellar water with some cotton pads

Jellycatspyjamas · 24/04/2025 07:58

@Extrasensing they might be done for depending on how bad the staining is but I’ve had success using a suede brush and steam. Brush them well with a suede brush and then just hold the dirty bit over a boiling kettle for a couple of seconds and then brush through the dirty marks. The leather clinic cleaner is good too but costs half the price of your shoes so it depends on how much you like the shoes.

"...cooking with and loving PFB in stews etc. "

Surely PFB doesn't need slow cooking ?

What is PFB ? Thanks.

Rather than trying to pour hot fat away after cooking, using a piece of kitchen roll to absorb it out of the pan and just binning it (I do mean the odd spoonful, not a whole chip pan!)

Or add oats to it and put it out for the birds

I cannot for the life of me understand this tip.

Super king-size duvets are wider than they are long, is that what it means? Did people not realise this?

I can't believe it either....😂

TeaAndStrumpets · 24/04/2025 08:18

I've used mayonnaise on sticky labels, but it needs to be left for a while.

Flibberteegibbet · 23/04/2025 19:07

Only problem with this is when your SKS duvet has lines in both directions so the filling is trapped in squares all over the duvet. I keep saying I’m going to write top/bottom on the duvet in Sharpie but forget every time!

If you count the squares, there are more one way than the other. The most squares go across the bed.

I work on the basis of Cook Once Eat Twice, so freeze a lot of stuff. It was always a real faff to get the stuff into a plastic bag (to then freeze flat for easy defrosting).

I’d get dribbles of mince or whatever around the bag which meant sealing it was tricky.

A wise MNetter suggested taking a large plastic soup carton, slicing the bottom off it, and sitting it in the open bag and spooning the contents in.

It makes such a difference.

However, I’ve since discovered 2 cup silicone containers

They then defrost beautifully into one of these ready for cooking

That you don't need to add fluid to meat in a slow cooker. I just now bung a leg of lamb in by itself and it cooks beautifully...haven't roasted one for years.

Are you from outside the uk? I am not familiar with this particular mash.

Nope, UK. Available from supermarkets. Other flavours available but I use this one. I add a knob of butter when making.

Does anyone have any tips for removing leftover sticky residue (from labels) off plastic please? 🤞🏼

Just spray with Elbow Grease, leave for a bit and it'll all but wipe off. May needs to do it twice. Magic stuff.

I think it might be a micro-typo for PBF (plant based foods) x

I started HRT this year - I’m 62!! I wish I’d started immediately menopause hit. Do it now girls, don’t wait. Endless years of torture with UTIs (another vote for D-Mannose here, my hospital consultant urologist said so). I haven’t had one since starting HRT, with oestrogen pessaires added. My advice is start now if you’re perimenopause or further along or if you haven’t done so start even if you think it’s too late. Life changing.
further UTI advice available, I’ve tried everything!!!!!

If you're going into town, have three things to do on one trip. EG - bank, glass recycling, chemist. Save time / bus fare / parking doing several trips.

Chat GPT correctly diagnosed frozen shoulder, gave scientific and other terms for it, identified correct anti inflammatories, painkillers, physio exercises and surgery options. I'd been through it a couple of times and knew the score, so tested it and it was RIGHT. Now I'd be happy to have an AI diagnosis if it comes to that.

The Script / we took you to stately homes. Tho I've never suffered them, I've been able to see and help when friends are.

What transwidows truly go through.

Generally it's helped me understand others' experiences so much better - and see others' behaviour for what it is.

In pinch you can dry a pair of jeans in the tumble dryer in 20 minutes by chucking in a big dry bath towel.

Over 20 years ago (my DS is now 24) I found a flapjack recipe on here which I've been making ever since. Everybody but everybody loves them and asks for the recipe.

175g butter[ original recipe said marge]
175g demerara sugar
2 tbs golden syrup
225g oats [the supermarket value sort work best]

Grease and line a tin [I use 20 x 25cm]. Heat oven to 170 C.
Melt butter, sugar and syrup gently in saucepan. Don't allow to boil. Off heat, add oats. Spoon into tray and flatten. Bake 25 mins. [Don't be tempted to overcook them]. Leave for 10 mins then cut into squares.

If you make sure that the sugar is properly melted then your flapjacks won't stick to the pan. I used to have to chisel my flapjacks out in crumb-format until a friend told me I was trying to hurry the procedure and not giving the sugar time to dissolve...

Oh, and another one - when flying long distance, stick a knicker liner inside your pants. Take it out when you arrive at your destination and it's like wearing clean knickers without having to go to all the faff of changing your pants in an aeroplane toilet. I often fly to Australia and hate the feeling of being all grungy after 24 hours flying, Knowing I'm wearing clean pants when I get off makes me feel better!

This is for those who are using formula (whether from the beginning or later on).

No need to keep formula milk warm or cold, just prepare on the go. Brilliant when out and about and in the middle of the night!

The best tip ever:

  • Fill bottles with boiling water - let water cool to room temperature. You can then bring bottles (with water) with you wherever you go.
  • Buy a formula powder dispenser - each segment is for one feed/bottle.
  • Then when you need a bottle prepared, you just empty the powder into the bottle and shake - voila, milk is ready!

All my kids got used to room temperature milk no problem.

It made it so easy to travel and go out and no need for cool bags or to warm the milk up in the middle of the night.

Actually with this recipe the ever-so-slightly crunchy demerara is part of the appeal. I use baking paper (or the reusable sort) and it comes out a treat.

For cables that will attach to movable devices, buy them 1m longer than the diagonal length of the room. Eg. Living room is 4m diagonally. Bought a 5m hdmi cable. Now I can attach my laptop to TV and operate it from anywhere in the room. No running out of cable or balancing in awkward positions. Did the same with my AC extension on my epilator too so no struggling to a) get to the mirror b) do hair removal in the most hard to reach places.

Using an online pharmacy for routine prescriptions. Just click on the app to request when they're due and they post them out to me. No trekking to a chemist or waiting around. Simply come home from work to find them on the doormat.

Two double duvets on a king size bed is a game changer - means there's no cover-hogging and there's a toasty bit in the middle where they overlap but cooler bits on the edges where it's singular.

When you sign up for anything, out the company name as your middle name (e.g., Jane Waitrose Smith or Susan Mumsnet Jones) that way if you start getting junk mail or dodgy communications, you'll know exactly which company has sold your information.

The company name as a middle name is brilliant. You can instantly unsubscribe from any that cause problems 😊

Thank you I'll give that last one a go. Nothing else has worked so far and tried all sorts!

Just try some vegetable oil first.

@Hatty65 this seams thing is new news. I have been battling this issue. I think I got my recent ones from linen bundle who helpfully put a tab in saying short side and long side, but I still end up a bit flummoxed - would have been even better if they put in head/foot and side!

I have used a sharpy pen and have written ‘top’ with arrows at the top of the quilt. Game changer after years of pissing about

Jellycatspyjamas · 24/04/2025 09:29

If travelling with small children use an over the door shoe holder to pack. Pack full outfits, roll them up and place each complete outfit in one shoe holder space - enough for each day/activity. Use any left over spaces for nappies, wipes, and bathroom supplies. Roll the whole thing up into your bag or suitcase. When you arrive simply unroll and hang over a door - everything you need is easily on hand. Saved me so much stress travelling with two small children.
