To ask what the most BRILLIANT advice/suggestion you've seen on here is?

Inspired by the other thread with a similar title!

Maybe not advice/suggestion as such, but I wouldn't have got my Mirena coil had I not been persuaded by the balance of views on here and enough positive feedback that it could work out well. It has been lifechanging, I wish I had done it 20 years ago, I could have avoided years of pain.

My new one is tretinoin. It's only been a few weeks but I already think I will be using this for the rest of my life. Why have I spent so much money on expensive and less efficacious creams?

Without wanting to control the direction of the thread, I wasn't thinking of LTB type advice. More immediately implementable things that someone could try today! (Although MN has definitely educated me in matters such as 'the script', narcissism, emotional abuse, and trans/gender critical matters!)

There's so much I've picked up from various posters over the years but my favourites are:

Cook once, eat twice. Just made cottage pie for tea, so made two - one's going in the freezer ready for another day.

One thing in, One thing out. I've stuck to this for years, and apply it to pretty much everything (other than food...) It's amazing how much stuff you accumulate, and this stops me frittering money on unnecessary things.

Always take a 4 gang extension socket on holiday so you only need 1 adaptor plug.

Pick your battles.

That extension one is game changing? How have I never thought of it?!

Aizen · 23/04/2025 19:32

The one thing I'll remember from this thread is flipping DUVETS!!

For difficult people who don't appreciate the things I do for them no matter how hard I try, I remember this and move on -

"Don't set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm"

It Is genius.

It is an environmental disaster zone, unethical, spreads disinformation and is very often completely wrong. Sometimes dangerously so.

Citronella tea lights by the back door to reduce the number of flying bastards trying to enter the house in summer.

Nor is it sensible to upload highly personal data (like your food and shopping habits, eye colour etc) to it with no consideration of what is happening to that data afterwards.

I have a general idea but what sort of prompts would you normally give and include to get the most out of it for this purpose, please?

usually i ask what i want it generate but then i ask it to improve and correct my prompt to make it better, so then it kind of writes itself

@Flytrap01

What actually is Grpcht - I suppose group chat? Seen it mentioned often but I am not at all techie.

a website where once you make an account you can use it for various research

We used to use them when we lived in Brunei, so if it works in a tropical rainforest...!

I’m not one for embracing all the tech but ChatGPT has been amazing when I have had a personal issue that’s getting me down. It’s like having a really supportive and emotionally intelligent best friend. I have good friends that I can talk to in real life but Chat is a place I can really express myself. It’s like free therapy.

thats the thing its like having mumsnetters but all qualified and fully educated in psychology etc

Another idea on the topic of duvets - buy one size larger than your bed size for plenty of overhang.

I have always done this. Can’t abide a skimpy duvet.

ColourlessGreenIdeasSleepFuriously · 23/04/2025 19:53

Chatgpt is not fully qualified in psychology. It is thoroughly unreliable as a source of information.

I'm a tenant and do it as cleaning for the same reasons. The landlady really didn't get good people in to do the bathroom, and it works for me and her on inspections. Clean to the best of your ability, let dry, then go for it.

Thanks. I've tried cleaning with grout cleaner, bleach and mould cleaner (in case it was mould). Nothing makes any difference.

To write on glass jars with an ordinary Sharpie when using them to store things in the fridge (left over stock, cream, soup etc). The sharpie washes off in the dishwasher. I now also use them on storage jars for rice and grains etc. Sadly it doesn't wash off reuseable freezer bags - I'd love to know what would.....

Masking tape sticks on plastic bags and you can write on it with a sharpie. I use it to label tupperware too. It pulls off easily as well.

Yes, i scrubbed fruitlessly for years until someone suggested the pens. Unibond is the best.

And no nastiness. It’s really helped me recently over something I was feeling pretty down about and it made me feel so much better.

I'm not on mounjaro but a friend has just started. We were on a day out and she mentioned it so I told her about the golden dose, which I'd learned about from here. She immediately phoned her DP to rescue the syringe out of the sharps bin as she didn't know anything about it, and was very grateful.

What is the golden dose please?

It hasn’t needed to be, it’s been more like an understanding and supportive friend.

Hatty65 · 22/04/2025 16:00

The one that sticks out for me is someone helpfully pointing out that if you have a king size or super king bed then the duvet goes ACROSS the bed horizontally, rather than vertically (if that makes sense).

I am ashamed to admit I've spent roughly 30 years with a superking bed, assuming that the stitching on the duvet ran from head to foot and grumbling that my duvet never fitted properly inside the cover.

Turning the duvet 90 degrees inside it's cover was life changing!

😀
