To ask what the most BRILLIANT advice/suggestion you've seen on here is?

Inspired by the other thread with a similar title!

Maybe not advice/suggestion as such, but I wouldn't have got my Mirena coil had I not been persuaded by the balance of views on here and enough positive feedback that it could work out well. It has been lifechanging, I wish I had done it 20 years ago, I could have avoided years of pain.

My new one is tretinoin. It's only been a few weeks but I already think I will be using this for the rest of my life. Why have I spent so much money on expensive and less efficacious creams?

Without wanting to control the direction of the thread, I wasn't thinking of LTB type advice. More immediately implementable things that someone could try today! (Although MN has definitely educated me in matters such as 'the script', narcissism, emotional abuse, and trans/gender critical matters!)

I didn’t read this on MN but I’m throwing it in anyway, because it’s such a great piece of information.

To fend off a UTI if you think you might be heading for one: Put a teaspoon of cream of tartar and a few drops of lemon juice in a mug of hot water, drink at first sign, and then again each morning add night, although I only had to drink it three times and it was gone, and I noticed an improvement within a couple of hours. It doesn’t taste too bad either, the only time I pulled a face was when I overdid the lemon juice.

The drink changes the pH inside the bladder, making it inhospitable to the bacteria causing the infection. It honestly works, I started getting symptoms at the start of a bank holiday weekend, knowing I couldn’t get to a doctor for at least four days. It’s only that fact that got me looking for other solutions.

Obvs not intended to replace medical advice blah blah.

Which sunscreen to use on my face that won't feel oily and give me spots.

Get the Merlin app to identify birdsong.

Where to get jeans that fit my elongated form.

None of them massive, but all of them life-enhancing and two of them within the past couple of weeks.

More profoundly, the advice, often repeated, to just step back from certain situations and stop trying to fix relationships single-handedly. If SIL wants to be like that, I don't have to play the game...

Can you please share the name of this sunscreen? Suncream always gives me spots.

Can I ask how much you’ve lost? I would love another stone off.

I’ve been talking mj for two months and lost two stone. I still have a long way to go and it’s not effortless, but it’s doable.
You might not qualify if you only have a stone to lose. You need BMI of 30, or 27 with a comorbidity.

Why? Mine gets washed every week alongside the sheet and pillowcases. It dries in an hour in the tumble dryer or during the day if hung over the bannister. I cannot see what is "skanky" about washing your whole duvet compared to just the covering.

Surely it's much easier just to wash a cover Confused

sueelleker · 23/04/2025 07:46

GameOfJones; What if you don't have a banister? Live in a flat, or like me, a double fronted house with a central staircase?

Well then, you're destined to be skanky...

Otherwise, you could tumble dry it as the PP mentions.
Failing that, could it be draped over 2 or 3 chairs or a large clothes airer?
Don't know how feasible that would be, just trying to come up with suggestions.

Cantabria Labs Heliocare 360 50+ SPF. It says something like 'oil-free gel, but it isn't a gel, more a slightly chalky tan-coloured cream. Despite the colour it doesn't look odd even when you slap it on in a hurry.

La Roche Posay Anthelios ultra light is another good SPF50.

They are pricey, but I only use them on my face and hands and they last a long time.

I can use a cheap generic now and then without an acne disaster kicking off.

No it isn't always. It should be obvious with a superking size such as you have, but on a kingsize it's a much closer call.

Try and be nicer.

You could also try to be nicer and not assume ill intent in people.

Bafflement at not understanding a description written online and trying to work out if I am understanding correctly isn't nastiness.

Plus the person who first gave that tip on this thread clearly said "super king bed".

Wirarpa knickers. Brilliant!

Never heard of them but might have to give these a try. Are they true to size?

I don't think we get these coverless ones where I live.

But, are they are thick as a normal duvet?
Are they warm enough for winter?
Will a king size fit in a normal washing machine?
Is it something like an comforter from back in the day?
What is the benefit of one apart from not having to put on a clean cover each week?

I don't know why I have so many questions about this? 😂

ooh is the nail varnish good for weak nails? If so what is it ?

ORLY Bonder Basecoat 18ml | Nail Polish Basecoat – ORLY Beauty UK

it's about £8 on Amazon - yes, I'd say good for weak nails in that it leaves you with a strong nail varnish that typically stays put for a week or longer without chipping. (maybe less if I do a lot in the garden)

I use it as a base with Essie gel couture colour and top coat or occasionally Opi colour - I estimate my varnish lasts twice as long as normal using this.

ORLY Bonder Basecoat 18ml

ORLY Bonder is a unique rubberised basecoat, which grips polish to the nail surface for extra-lasting adhesion. This unique formula delivers a cutting edge resin technology to improve polish adhesion and long-lasting wear-ability Features the award-win...

Claude is supposed to be more ethical too. There was a really interesting interview with one of the owners on a tech podcast on Times Radio in the middle of the night, now that I no longer sleep...

No ai is ethical. They use illegally scraped data, underpaid 3rd world labour and insane amoints of scarce natural resources, energy and water.

TheGaaTheSkaAndTheRa · 23/04/2025 08:46

That anal fissure non healing is as a result of a fungal infection. Four weeks of Nizoral shampoo had it healing up after years and $$$$ spent.

More ethical...relatively...

All searches & data use is not great for lots of reasons.

At least they are giving ethics some lip service.

Can I ask the dosage, please and where you get them from? Getting desperate! Thanks!

Holland and Barret. Lots of different ones, all do the same. I take as soon as I feel a twinge that a uti may come on. My friend who suffers badly takes daily.

Whenindoubthugitout · 23/04/2025 09:11

Hatty65 · 22/04/2025 16:00

The one that sticks out for me is someone helpfully pointing out that if you have a king size or super king bed then the duvet goes ACROSS the bed horizontally, rather than vertically (if that makes sense).

I am ashamed to admit I've spent roughly 30 years with a superking bed, assuming that the stitching on the duvet ran from head to foot and grumbling that my duvet never fitted properly inside the cover.

Turning the duvet 90 degrees inside it's cover was life changing!

Also, Mark the tag - is the tag on the side or at the top/bottom, so you don’t debate yourself every bloody time you change the wretched thing!

LolaLouise · 23/04/2025 09:16

TheWorminLabyrinth · 22/04/2025 17:53

OP, can I ask how you managed to get tret? I've done the "consultations" on skin + me, and also on Dermatica, but they never seem to tell you what you are getting - skin + me just says "your daily dose" - so how do you know it is tret you are getting? Sorry to derail.

Ive recently started with dermatica. they emailed me for more information very soon after i signed up, then not long after that emailed me a suggested prescription and advice on how to use it, and asked me to confirm i was happy to continue, this was before i was charged. I put card details in when i signed up, but it didnt charge until after i confirmed. My suggested prescription was Tretinoin 0.025% / Niacinamide 4% for the first 12 weeks, then they have said they will review and adjust it if necessary. I have zero complaints so far!

diddl · 23/04/2025 09:26

If you look at sizes for duvets & they are written like this

DUVETS
(W x L)
Cot Bed
120cm x 150cm
47" x 59"
Single
135cm x 200cm
53" x 79"
Double
200cm x 200cm
79" x 79"
King Size
230cm x 220cm
91" x 87"
Superking
260cm x 220cm
102" x 87"
Emperor
290cm x 235cm
114" x 93"

You can see that after double they are wider than longer.

diddl · 23/04/2025 09:27

This is something I need to try the next time I feel the signs starting.

I did recently use Boots online for a 3 day course of antibiotics, as started feeling the pain on Friday evening. You do pay more but worth knowing if you can’t get to the docs, can also be prescribed by a pharmacist.

Rather than trying to pour hot fat away after cooking, using a piece of kitchen roll to absorb it out of the pan and just binning it (I do mean the odd spoonful, not a whole chip pan!)

Yes I do this before I make gravy in the toasting tin. There's always too much fat, especially from lamb.

TheSandgroper · 23/04/2025 09:39

@TeaAndStrumpets @HowAmITheCatsGranny I pour mine into an enamel bowl, pop it into the fridge and voila, solid fat for binning or treating the dog.

If you have roasted the chicken and pour it into a bowl and refrigerate, underneath will be some juices. Use the fat for starting risotto and add the juices as you cook to enrich it.

This so much. I saw it suggested here and it’s awesome for itinerary planning, figuring out what you can make with whatever food you have in the house & ideas for things like party planning.
