To ask what the most BRILLIANT advice/suggestion you've seen on here is?

Inspired by the other thread with a similar title!

Maybe not advice/suggestion as such, but I wouldn't have got my Mirena coil had I not been persuaded by the balance of views on here and enough positive feedback that it could work out well. It has been lifechanging, I wish I had done it 20 years ago, I could have avoided years of pain.

My new one is tretinoin. It's only been a few weeks but I already think I will be using this for the rest of my life. Why have I spent so much money on expensive and less efficacious creams?

Without wanting to control the direction of the thread, I wasn't thinking of LTB type advice. More immediately implementable things that someone could try today! (Although MN has definitely educated me in matters such as 'the script', narcissism, emotional abuse, and trans/gender critical matters!)

Yeah this tip belongs in the worst advice thread!!

Surely, when the power comes back on, everything will freeze again.

nzeire · 23/04/2025 05:04

ive just made my bed and didn’t get the rage!!!!

Reachoutreachout · 23/04/2025 05:14

i use mumsnet at least ten times a week for advice on all sorts of subjects!

But the most important was from a woman who was at the end of her tether with diet culture and was writing a long rant about stopping dieting. She wrote about giving herself permission: “I will now drink milk in my coffee because I hate it black” and it made me cry really hard because like her I’d been doing things that made me miserable for years and to hear someone say it outloud made me so sad for myself and her too. It was a game changer for me in realising restrictive diets were not the answer to happiness. Thank you random woman on mumsnet!

Only fill the kettle to boil with the amount of water you need.

One cup = minimum fill line

You will be surprised how much electricity you save.

Miffyhasbigears · 23/04/2025 05:38

20+yrs ago, I owe my successful breastfeeding journey to MN and the links to sites like Kellymom which was my bible at the time. I may criticise MN, but I will be forever grateful for that.

Child Benefit.

If one of you is over the limit, still claim CB but tell them you don’t want the payment (there’s a box somewhere on the website to tick!) that way you still get the NIC so you’ll get the pension credit needed to claim full state pension.

That when hanging washing on the line you should hang it “top bottom, bottom top”.

What does that mean?

nightmarepickle2025 · 23/04/2025 06:14

Dehumidifier, heated throw, Mirena coil.

LittleEsme · 23/04/2025 06:48

Love this thread.

The relationships board has helped me no end - my understanding of dynamics etc.

Chick981 · 23/04/2025 06:51

A minor one but I bought frozen mash the other day after seeing it on here and loved it, game changer for a quick tea.

snowdrop2011 · 23/04/2025 06:52

The pointer to Caroline Girvan’s strength training programmes - I’ve been looking for something like this for years and it’s just perfect. 40 minutes of free online classes every other day and I can feel and see my muscles. Brilliant tip.

I cannot for the life of me understand this tip.

Super king-size duvets are wider than they are long, is that what it means? Did people not realise this?

Can confirm it works! Did it last night after reading here abs didn’t spend the night either half an empty duvet cover wrapped around me!

Thank you!
im sure we’ve tried turning it before and were planning to buy a new duvet that was the right size 🤣

So can you confirm that the tip is that people had been sleeping with the duvet in the cover the wrong way round? I don't understand how so many people could make that mistake, it's obvious!

Fimofriend · 23/04/2025 06:11

What does that mean?

If you wear it on your top half, hang on the line by the bottom and vice versa.

Me neither. I mean duvet cover - a rectangle. Duvet - a rectangle. You will put one into the other so the shorter sides go into shorter sides, and longer go into longer.

Were people stuffing longer sides into shorter, and couldn't figure out what the problem was?

To the poster who suggested I ask my doctor for Soolantra topical cream for my adult acne / rosacea / chronic itching skin… You have changed my life. Thank you.

I discovered those early on in my weight loss journey, often on offer on Amazon. They’re BRILLIANT! Last time, I bought the size down, now the right size. Love them.

I have to know; what’s so amazing about the wirarpa underwear?! I need new pants, and it seems my preferred ones are no longer made (disaster!) and I can’t find any I like even half as much 😭

No it isn't always. It should be obvious with a superking size such as you have, but on a kingsize it's a much closer call.

Try and be nicer.

EdithStourton · 23/04/2025 07:40

Which sunscreen to use on my face that won't feel oily and give me spots.

Get the Merlin app to identify birdsong.

Where to get jeans that fit my elongated form.

None of them massive, but all of them life-enhancing and two of them within the past couple of weeks.

More profoundly, the advice, often repeated, to just step back from certain situations and stop trying to fix relationships single-handedly. If SIL wants to be like that, I don't have to play the game...

Indeed, on both counts.
I ended up writing on our duvet in Sharpie.

I've always thought coverless duvets are a bit skanky, and I'm by no means a 'wash your towel after every use' kind of person.

Why? Mine gets washed every week alongside the sheet and pillowcases. It dries in an hour in the tumble dryer or during the day if hung over the bannister. I cannot see what is "skanky" about washing your whole duvet compared to just the covering.

Zanzara · 23/04/2025 07:42

@EdithStourton so did I! 😂

sueelleker · 23/04/2025 07:46

GameOfJones; What if you don't have a banister? Live in a flat, or like me, a double fronted house with a central staircase?

NattyTurtle59 · 23/04/2025 07:55

Don’t put it down, put it away.

My DM wrote this on a piece of paper and attached it to my bedroom door when I was a teen in the 1970s. I didn't take much notice of it then - and still don't (although I'm trying to do better!)

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/04/2025 07:55

Storing the duvet cover, bottom sheet and pillow case(s) for each bed, inside one of its pillow cases. Before that I was endlessly rummaging through a far too small airing cupboard to find everything.
