AIBU to think I shouldn't have to give an email address to get a receipt?

My DD(11) was buying something in New Look today and was asked for her email address for the receipt. I said no as I don't think it's appropriate for her to be giving out her email address, but was told that they had "gone paperless" so that was the only option.

She hadn't actually tried on the item so we definitely wanted a receipt in case it needed to go back - so I got very cross at being forced to hand over my email.

I am completely in favour of cutting down on receipts and having the option to choose paper/email/none but AIBU to think one shouldn't be forced to hand over email addresses just to get a proof of an in person purchase?

YANBU. Digital exclusion is becoming more and more of a problem for young people.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 21/04/2025 19:48

Just say no I need a paper one please and they will give you one. They are trying to be paperless but they’ll will still provide one

Fluffypussycat · 21/04/2025 19:49

If for a minor purchase I wouldn’t but for a larger transaction, I would.

Eminybob · 21/04/2025 19:50

They can give you a paper one.
I had to argue to get one recently, but they definitely can.

Really poor customer service service and I really feel for the poor sales assistants who have to pedal this shit.

TennesseeStella · 21/04/2025 19:51

I just say I don't have email. They know fine well that I'm telling porkies, but I always get a paper receipt!

GreyCarpet · 21/04/2025 19:55

New Look will still give you a paper receipt if you say you're not giving your email address.

I never give out my email address. Even when they assure me it's just for the receipt and definitely not so they can spam me with marketing emails...

ViolaPlains · 21/04/2025 19:56

I had this issue in NL last week. I just insisted I wanted a paper receipt.

FrenchandSaunders · 21/04/2025 19:57

You can say no

BabyYodasGotMyTeacher · 21/04/2025 19:58

Maybe I want insistent enough... although I refused to leave the till until it had arrived so you'd had thought at that point they might have relented.....

The staff won’t like it because people will get shirty with them. If you ask for a paper one they’ll probably cave - although worth noting that it is not a legal requirement (unless VAT business selling to VAT business), but I imagine the staff would really really hate being told to take that line.

ExtraOnions · 21/04/2025 19:58

Set up an email specifically for receipts… then you have them handily stored in one place.

JustMeHello · 21/04/2025 20:23

I just say 'no thank you', and if necessary, 'no thank you, a paper one please' and nobody has ever batted an eyelid. It's enough of a non sequitur answer to the 'can I please take your email address?' question to slightly throw them and nobody has ever questioned it or pushed it.

That's my normal approach but today I got told they'd gone paperless and couldn't give out a paper one.

They can, they’re targeted to get email addresses so they don’t want to agree to a paper one and lie to say there’s no other option. It’s actually illegal the way they’re doing it. GDPR requires that when collecting data from any customer they must make available the Privacy Policy and provide the data subject (you) with option to consent or not consent to say they use that data for marketing purposes. They don’t do that. New Look wants your email addresses because they use it to sign you up to their newsletter to push future sales and they sell your details for additional revenue.

Notquitegrownup2 · 21/04/2025 20:32

You shouldn't have to but you could set up a new email account [email protected] . . .

uthredswife · 21/04/2025 20:32

Don't forget new look pulled out of Ireland with no notice and during their final closing down sale they refused to accept their own vouchers leaving myself and thousands of others 100s of euros out of pocket. New look can fuck the fuck off

Energe · 21/04/2025 20:37

I hate that too

CountryQueen · 21/04/2025 20:38

I knew this was going to be new look

BasilParsley · 21/04/2025 20:41

I think I would have handed the purchase back and said "please cancel the sale"... Then taken my DD to somewhere else that was less rigid...

postmanshere · 21/04/2025 20:49

I accidentally voted YABU but totally meant the opposite - I also hate this. Especially when I then get spammed afterward. Also, my email address is my name and I have a complicated foreign name and it leads to an awkward and annoying encounter where I have to repeat myself over and over when spelling it because it had a few repeated letters in it and people get really
confused.

I suppose the thing to do
would be to set up an email address
specifically for this purpose…

Same here. Always works for me. If the answer is no, then there’d be no sale.

Me too, there are regular threads with the same issu

I was also told I couldn’t have a paper receipt in river island as they’d gone paperless. I was out shopping with DM and she was buying something too, in the queue behind me. They gave her a paper receipt as she requested!

Hoppinggreen · 21/04/2025 21:05

I just say "no thanks, I will have a paper one please"
Its never been a problem

mbizzles · 21/04/2025 21:06

I just say no - and they've always given me a paper receipt. That said, the last time I did notice they've changed their patter to "we've gone paperless recently so what's your email address, so we can email you a receipt?". I still said no. (She begrudgingly gave me one...)
