AIBU to think I shouldn't have to give an email address to get a receipt?

My DD(11) was buying something in New Look today and was asked for her email address for the receipt. I said no as I don't think it's appropriate for her to be giving out her email address, but was told that they had "gone paperless" so that was the only option.

She hadn't actually tried on the item so we definitely wanted a receipt in case it needed to go back - so I got very cross at being forced to hand over my email.

I am completely in favour of cutting down on receipts and having the option to choose paper/email/none but AIBU to think one shouldn't be forced to hand over email addresses just to get a proof of an in person purchase?

I always say no.

Legally they cannot force you. GDPR rules state that you have to consent for someone to have your data (your email address is obviously data) so by asking for a paper receipt you aren’t giving consent for them to have your data

CalmFox · 21/04/2025 21:13

I purchased a 7.99 tshirt in new look when they asked for my email address, id tapped my card before the request. I said no paper receipt please, told we don't give them anymore. What a palaver to get my money back, I refused to give them my address for the purchase and refund 🙄 fook that

ItGhoul · 21/04/2025 21:17

Regardless of whether they say they’ve gone paperless, they can still give you a paper receipt. Otherwise they would be excluding customers who don’t have email addresses at all. They have to provide you with a receipt, and they can’t make you provide personal data to get one.

What gets me is that anyone thinks this is better for the environment. Paper is used once. Do people not understand that cloud storage can be worse?

AusBoundDD · 21/04/2025 21:22

YANBU whatsoever - the whole ‘gone paperless’ thing is absolute rubbish, if you want/need a physical receipt they can easily print one! I found it entertaining the other day when the cashier at New Look accidentally printed a physical receipt whilst typing in my email for the ever so essential digital receipt. A few seconds beforehand she had told me they don’t do physical receipts anymore.. absolute bollocks!

There’s no legal requirement to provide you with a receipt.

New look are known for this shit.

If they refuse to provide a receipt then ask them for a refund there and then. They will magically 'find' the printer under the desk.

pizzaHeart · 21/04/2025 21:38

I don’t think it’s true about them going paperless, I was at our local New Look 5 days ago and got a paper receipt. I just said: I prefer a paper one.
At some places e.g Superdrug I use a loyalty card and that how I get a receipt, I’m ok with this. Standing in front of the till and every time telling them my email - I refuse.
I know that I can have a separate email just for shops but I don’t want to. I prefer paper receipts.

Are you joking? They take my money they have to provide me something for that .

Tangerinenets · 21/04/2025 21:41

I set up a random new email just for receipts and purchases to keep it all in one place.

dogcatkitten · 21/04/2025 21:41

Ask how they give you proof of purchase for possible return without a receipt. Ask for the name of the cashier and to take a picture of them holding the garment in front of the store name as your digital receipt.

coxesorangepippin · 21/04/2025 21:41

Just say you live abroad

There’s no legal requirement to provide you with a receipt.

If the contract says the customer can return an item they need to provide a proof of purchase method which complys with GDPR. See InfoSecInTheCity post
And as their market has children they have stricter GDPR obligations

But may be easier to set up a second gmail account and add the + symbol to each shop that asks

TrashBYGMT+[email protected] as that makes it easier to track data breaches if they sell or leak the address.

Brefugee · 21/04/2025 21:43

I just tell them that i am not giving them my email address and that if they're not giving me a receipt, they can put my purchases back on the shelf.

I've not had a problem up to now.

I'm interested though - if they don't have to give you a receipt, how do they replace faulty goods?

Thisisnotmyid · 21/04/2025 21:43

I just tell them I’m buying it for someone else and need a paper receipt thankfully not had an issue so far but I agree it’s ridiculous although not the staff’s fault!

BlueBarnacles · 21/04/2025 21:43

I had the same in New Look on Saturday! The girl behind the counter had the absolute hump when she asked for my email and I told her I wanted a paper copy. She was so rude. Then flounced that I wouldn’t get a refund if I didn’t give her my email address and that they didn’t use the email for any marketing purposes. I stood my ground and got the paper copy shoved at me 🤔

That a good point. It will be the the next part of my response after “I prefer a paper one” 🙂

Rh0dedenr0n · 21/04/2025 21:48

new look are the worst ones for this but they CAN give paper receipts

I also had the same last week, she warned me very sternly that they would be ‘going paperless soon’ and spoke to me as if I was being really unreasonable. Oh dear, one less place to go shopping maybe..

Bitchesbelike · 21/04/2025 21:57

Last year this happened to me and the girl insisted shr needed it to give me a reciept. I told here that she didn’t. And then she gave me a paper reciept

Happyher · 21/04/2025 22:00

Create an email address just for receipts

ZippyDoodle · 21/04/2025 22:07

Another reason not to shop in New Look. Cheap shite being another one….

Goldenboysmum · 21/04/2025 22:10

I'd rather have an email receipt.

I hate having a purse full of receipts, especially around Christmas when I'm shopping a lot more than usual.

If anything needs returned they just search for my receipt using my email and I delete the email receipt anyway.

and remember if you pay cash and lose your paper receipt you have no proof of purchase, so no refund or exchange if its needed.

grafittiartist · 21/04/2025 22:14

Surely it takes ages too- my email
is long and has my surname which can be spelt in several ways. Quite a faff to say.
Reading it out might also breach GDPR?
Im sure there are loads of other ways that they can save paper. Receipts are way down the list!
