AIBU to think I shouldn't have to give an email address to get a receipt?

My DD(11) was buying something in New Look today and was asked for her email address for the receipt. I said no as I don't think it's appropriate for her to be giving out her email address, but was told that they had "gone paperless" so that was the only option.

She hadn't actually tried on the item so we definitely wanted a receipt in case it needed to go back - so I got very cross at being forced to hand over my email.

I am completely in favour of cutting down on receipts and having the option to choose paper/email/none but AIBU to think one shouldn't be forced to hand over email addresses just to get a proof of an in person purchase?

Use an online contact form and tell them no paper receipts will mean you don't shop there anymore. Make sure you put in an email address like [email protected]. The staff are no doubt moaned at endlessly to collect this data so I feel sorry for them - make it clear to management how unpopular it is with customers.

I was in New Look today and they asked for my email to give me my receipt, I just said I’ll have a paper copy please. They said that they can do paper and email and that I the email would be easier to find if I need to return it. I just repeated can I have a paper receipt please, I don’t want an email receipt. They gave me the paper one.

Learn the basics of another language, this is the only situation where I just reply in Urdu and look as confused as possible, always a quick way to get a normal receipt as they can’t assume I don’t want one.

Its a shit policy, as always the staff are the ones that suffer.

littlebilliie · 21/04/2025 22:28

I. Always decline this data is sold

BoredZelda · 21/04/2025 22:36

They aren’t going paperless, they want your email for spammin.

Insist on paper.

Cynic17 · 21/04/2025 22:40

You don't have to give an email address. I never do.

strawlight · 21/04/2025 22:42

[email protected]

farley123 · 21/04/2025 22:48

I also experienced the same at New Look last week. The shop assistant was quite pushy and unpleasant. She asked for my email. I said "Can I just have a paper receipt please?". She said "I'll take your email if you don't mind." I stood my ground and she did give me a paper receipt but she was not happy about it. She also tried "If you give me your email you can have a paper receipt and a digital one which will be easier to find."

I am not keen to give them my custom in the future if this is going to happen every time.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 21/04/2025 22:50

Doesn’t everyone here have a burner email that you registered on MN with? Just use that🤷‍♀️.

I generally decline giving my email, but if I do it’s my nonsense one.

ETA… this is something you should also be encouraging your older kids to do. Not use their main email for stuff like this or for website registrations.

RabbitWeb6 · 21/04/2025 22:54

I actually prefer email receipts, I lose paper ones.

🤣🤣🤣

ladyofshertonabbas · 21/04/2025 22:56

yanbu. If they spell it wrong, the receipt won’t arrive, something which took Halford’s half an hour to rectify so I could leave the shop with a receipt. Idiots.

8misskitty8 · 21/04/2025 23:02

I just say a blunt ‘no’ or ‘don’t have one’ when they ask for my email.
This actually pisses me off when shops do this. I’m not giving out my email to some random and to the people in the queue.

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 21/04/2025 23:05

Yanbu, I always respond that I’d just like a paper receipt, and insist if they try to talk me into it but they usually just give a paper one with no further discussion once I’ve asked.

Ponderingwindow · 21/04/2025 23:11

You can have as many email addresses as you want for free. Just set one up for receipts and make your life easier.

GammonAndEgg · 21/04/2025 23:14

This is from New Looks own website!

They say you can have a paper receipt if you prefer

WorriedMillie · 21/04/2025 23:32

Our local Dunelm used to ask for email for a receipt, but the last few times I’ve been in, they’ve just given a paper one, without asking
I wonder if they’d had complaints….

ElaineParrish · 21/04/2025 23:34

Data collection at its worst, and you pay for the privelege.
Good to save paper though I guess

whatsappdoc · 22/04/2025 07:14

What happens if you want a gift receipt?

Pippa12 · 22/04/2025 07:18

To be fair to new look, I have had countless digital receipts and I have never received marketing emails from them.

RampantIvy · 22/04/2025 07:25

Notquitegrownup2 · 21/04/2025 20:32

You shouldn't have to but you could set up a new email account [email protected] . . .

Or [email protected]

I actually do have a second email address for this kind of thing, but it is a sensible sounding one.

soupyspoon · 22/04/2025 07:29

I've been asked this in new look before and refused, the assistant was really snippy about it

user1492757084 · 22/04/2025 07:31

They can give paper receipts.
Maybe they email them to themselves and then print it out. I don't know exactly how they do it but that is one way they could.

purpleme12 · 22/04/2025 07:33

New look's been ok with me when I've said no

It's River Island that were pushy and arsey.i gave it to them cos she really pushed back but then I looked at my email and said well it's not come through. (It actually never did so they clearly took it down wrong). When they said oh it will I said i can't go without a receipt THEN they gave me a paper receipt!

Set up an email specifically for receipts… then you have them handily stored in one place.

Fabulous idea, thank you! I hadn’t thought of doing that.
