Silliest place you’ve seen a dog owner take their dog

To ask where the silliest / most inappropriate place you’ve seen a dog taken by the owner

Inspired by recent posts complaining about dogs being everywhere in cafes etc

Yesterday in our local Cathedral Easter service , a dog was taken up to the altar for communion with its owners. I’ve seen it all now 😃
I was unfortunately unable to see if they attempted to snaffle a bit of bread for the dog , but it honestly wouldn’t have surprised me
Just why ?

I am seeing an increasing number of signs in cafes and pubs reminding owners that while their dogs are welcome that they need to be on leads at all times, not sit on the sofas/chair and obviously to clear up their mess.

If can only be selfish, ignorant owners that have prompted this.

I can understand this one. If you have to travel a long way to a uni, and there is no one to leave your family dog with for a lengthy period of time, then it makes sense.

If only there was a paid service people could use. Like an overnight place for dogs.

My local church also has an animal service every year.

How do you know they want to be Christian?

rosemarble · 21/04/2025 09:49

OlympicWomen · 21/04/2025 09:45

@rosemarble I think that's the point. Your dog's behaviour shouldn't negatively impact someone else.

Exactly. And then try and put the 'blame' on me by suggesting that I not been running their dog would not have jumped up and snagged my Sweaty Betty running tights.

Blink53368865 · 21/04/2025 09:49

In the crowd watching a fireworks display. Then the owner has to run out part way through because the dog is understandably distressed. It's happened for several years now

OldGothsFadeToGrey · 21/04/2025 09:51

BreezySwan · 21/04/2025 08:57

I took mine for a hike up a mountain, he was really annoying kept pulling at the lead and barking at sheep. Next time I'll leave him in the car

Probably should just leave him at home. Barking at sheep counts as sheep worrying, which is a criminal offence.

Lots of farms round here and the farmers can shoot dogs that are worrying their sheep.

dawngreen · 21/04/2025 09:53

Never taken my dogs in supermarkets or cafes. But I don't see a problem with car boot sales. Its simply a case of not taking your dog in a area with lots of ppl. You can look at the quieter stall area's. And wait a bit until the crowd moves to another area.

Where? Can you give a screen shot please?

No, for 2 reasons - first, it will further derail the thread and second, I’m not interested in any form of discussion or debate with anti-trans MN types.

But there are loads of ‘men in skirts’ and deliberate use of the other pronouns disguised as ‘free speech’ or ‘can’t force me into engaging in your delusions’ posts.

And I say this as someone who believes in biological sex and abhors gender stereotypes.

DBSFstupid · 21/04/2025 09:55

Agree.

Amberlynnswashcloth · 21/04/2025 09:56

Garden centre Easter showing of lambs. Mostly toddlers and young children. Grown man brought his dog go right up to the pen and allowed it to sniff and 'meet' the lambs only pulling it away when the dog started barking and reaching for the lambs and the lambs became agitated.

Such a bizarre and irresponsible thing to witness.

Why is mumsnet suddenly anti dog?

If you think MN is anti dog you have not read even this morning's top threads.

It's a good thing that on MN we can discuss subjects without having to stick to a purity spiral one way or the other. We can actually discuss and have opinions that are our own and hear opinions of other people that are actually their own, not just toeing the line of the opinion police. It is informative and helpful.

My dogs don't go into clothes shops or food shops, and nor should they. There are lots of other places they don't go which is personal preference. e.g. I do not seek out dogfriendly cafes to take my dogs to, but I think it is good that they exist. I also think it is good that dogfree cafes exist. We are not all the same and that is A Good Thing.

You can take dogs in your trolley in lots of supermarkets in France...not just small dogs either!

From my experience living in France, food hygiene in supermarkets is not high on their list of priorities

In a small quiet Mass. The dog kept yapping. The priest had to raise his voice. Ridiculous (and expressly forbidden in the Catholic Church).

There must have been a crying baby or two and a talking toddler as well?

I remember being in a church in Italy with my very Catholic ILs, a little old lady indicated would we mind holding her dog’s lead while she went up for communion, which we agreed. Dog was no trouble.

I don't know about silliest but I was in an M & S food shop on Saturday- it was one off because I never usually buy M & S food - and there was a woman shopping there with a dog in her trolley. It was a small dog lying on a blanket . I stress it was not a guide dog or hearing assistance dog.

I was actually disgusted.

Since when were people allowed to disregard hygiene laws in this manner?
And the staff can't have failed to see this dog.

The dog was in the trolley?

This really is disgusting! 🤮

Ok. I just always baulk at so many parents asking teachers to do them extra favours and extra bits of responsibility,. Just bear in mind it's hard for a teacher to say no in those circumstances.
However, if you're saying it's fine, then it must be.

I get it - teachers have way too much responsibility already.

I am time poor and need to streamline my mornings, but I also entirely shoulder the responsibility of leaving my dog tied up outside - it’s not zero risk, but given the time of day, number of people around and non-premium nature of my dog, it’s low!

I don’t expect the teachers to do anything - but as I said, often they seem to love seeing the various dogs at drop off!

People are anti badly trained dogs and owners.

Worst I've seen is taking them on the school run despite being asked not to. And then tying a distressed dog up outside the gates.

I once worked in a school where one family, who assumed everyone loved their giant dog, not only brought it on the school run but “accidentally” let it run loose around the playground! They and the dog-loving headteacher actually laughed about it.

We were out and about yesterday I actually thought this was about us but our dog didn't bark at lambs, which we would never allow. People are allowed to take their dogs outside not just on "designated " walks. The dog owners we saw yesterday were responsible and didn't let their dogs bother anybody/thing

My life never runs perfectly (I can but dream). Apologies if I came across as snippy.

I suppose what I was trying to say was that I think the balance has shifted. When we had a dog there were things we didn't do because we had a dog. In your example either one of us would have stayed at home or we'd have arranged for a dogsitter, not least because going to an open day involves touring departments and/or attending talks and we'd have wanted to focus on that rather than faffing about with the dog.

I feel that people use the fact that a dog cannot be left as justification to take them everywhere rather than adjusting what they can or cannot do. And I think that in some cases that results in dogs being in places that aren't appropriate for them.

I understand and agree with you. I have two dogs and we don’t go to certain places with them, as I don’t think it appropriate ie inside restaurants. We avoid very “doggy” places because i hate unruly dogs and their ill bred owners 😂

So are you saying that because human babies and toddlers can make noise in church that we should therefore accept a yapping dog?
The parents should remove crying babies and disruptive children.

Why is mumsnet suddenly anti dog?

Some of us are fed up of being jumped on by people's dogs, that are 'just saying hello'.

As the amount of people owning dogs has increased so has the amount of shit owners who let dogs invade people's space all of the time.

I'm quite happy with owners who's have good control of their dogs and keep themselves to themselves, but they are becoming increasingly rare. I go out on a walk and about 80% of the owners have zero control over their dogs. Or think everyone just wants their dog to give them a good sniff or jump up at them. If I want to say hello to a dog I will approach them myself and ask the owner.

hellywelly3 · 21/04/2025 10:06

I’ll start with I love dogs, I’ve got one myself. But they really are everywhere now. Which wouldn’t be too much of a problem if they were trained. They trailed it at a shopping centre I worked in. The amount of male dogs cocking their legs in the stores was gross. And who do you think has to clean it up, poor sales assistants, the owners soon scarper.
I just think we need to remember dogs aren’t our children.
