Silliest place you’ve seen a dog owner take their dog

To ask where the silliest / most inappropriate place you’ve seen a dog taken by the owner

Inspired by recent posts complaining about dogs being everywhere in cafes etc

Yesterday in our local Cathedral Easter service , a dog was taken up to the altar for communion with its owners. I’ve seen it all now 😃
I was unfortunately unable to see if they attempted to snaffle a bit of bread for the dog , but it honestly wouldn’t have surprised me
Just why ?

My mums church does this. The dogs can up to be blessed. I think it’s lovely. A lot of the pensioners bring their dogs

There’s a woman who keeps bringing her dog to the hairdressers I go to. I hate it! It’s my one chance for peace and quiet and the stupid thing runs around jumping up at people and being a nuisance. Why bring a dog to a hairdressers?

Ilovechocolatelimesandsherbertlemons · 22/04/2025 23:37

We are sick of people from the suburbs bringing their dogs to our village and letting them loose in the fields to attack sheep and lambs. Also hanging their bags of dogshit in the trees or letting them crap all along our footpaths and bridleways. Has got much worse since COVID.

HerbalBovril · 22/04/2025 23:49

Saw a bloke hop off his motorcycle with a small dog strapped to his back. Pup was in a leather baby-carrier type thing. Had goggles and a little helmet. It was bloody adorable, but I can’t help wondering how enjoyable it actually is for the dog 😬

Agree. A local chap who always turned a blind eye to people using the private trail through his land put up a load of signs during covid because people were being complete twats. Letting their dogs run around the fields, taking picnics.

Why is mumsnet suddenly anti dog?

I am seriously allergic to a lot of dogs. I can’t actually cope with dogs being allowed everywhere and am viewed as being highly unreasonable for moving away from a dog in a cafe/restaurant/pub/shop etc. it’s an actual nightmare are as I do need to be able to breathe.

Cliff edge without a lead and the poor thing ran over before they could call him back.

MyFavouriteSpoon · 23/04/2025 08:41

This. Why on earth would you want to take a dog to a nightclub.

My previous NDN used to take his dogs out boating on the river. I think they rather enjoyed it.

I don't think it is it's just anti dogs being treated like people and being taken into inappropriate places all the time.
The most inappropriate place I have seen a dog was in the car in front of me sitting unrestrained in the front seat if a car with it's head stick out of the window barking at everyone. It was extremely distracting and dangerous.

Wide amounts of campaigns against leaving dogs in cars
Partly because of heat
Partly because of dog theft
Partly because the way new alarms work mean they sound a lot if dogs are left.

Many hardware stores are dog friendly and advertise as such

But why would you need to take your dog to a hardware store? Why can't you leave it at home?

Don't get me wrong I'm not routinely taking my dog to hardware stores. If I'm specifically going there, im going alone and 99% of the time my dogs are at home, But I wouldn't leave them in the car while I went in.

The handful of times I have

I've been somewhere where I can't leave them at home eg away on holiday and picking up some sort of thing to fix something

Or its been a coincidentally pop in where ive happened to drop in on my way back from somewhere and i havent left my dog in the car eg on drive back from a walk. Often they are on industrial parks out of the way from my normal town driving.

My local wicks for example is right next to my dogs vets, and they are often nearby things like pets at home, jolleys etc where people are already out with pets.

My local wicks is particularly dog friendly, and has treats by the tills etc. We used that one as a training shop a few times, they are an ideal first shop for dogs as quiet, wide aisles and not crammed full of merchandise with the odd passing trolley. Normally with my fosters wicks is one of the shops that is a good test to see how they cope in that sort of environment before deciding if they can do more challenging places.

Why shouldn’t you take your dog to a hardware store?

Whistonia · 23/04/2025 09:38

My dog is a rescue with separation anxiety so we take her with us wherever we can. She is small and well behaved, brings pleasure to people and then isn’t distressed.

8dateslater · 23/04/2025 10:02

I assume it's a bit like when people take kids to somewhere not kid friendly even when there is a second parent. Kids are equally a nightmare in b&q and are just as unsafe

Its a matter of need / convenience

No one really wakes up thinking yeah my toddler really wants to visit b&q, costa, and a shop full of small trinkets and an adult clothes shop.

It just happens that you are with them and it meets a need.

Shops/ cafes know you could go home and drop your dog home, you could leave a child with the other parent at home but if you are out they want you to pop in, otherewise there's a good chance you'll go home, not impulse buy or just go on amazon

This is quite a few years ago and dog is sadly no longer alive but my sister had a Great Dane called Percy and she lived next door to her dentist who was absolutely besotted with Percy.

My sister was nervous about dental check ups and her dentist suggested that she could bring her husband or someone for support to hold her hand etc and then he laughed and said why not bring Percy!

She did and he was a big bit with staff and in the waiting room with other anxious people being distracted by letting Percy.

Percy was such a success that the dentist would ask my sister to drop him off when there was going to be someone, usually a child with a known dental phobia and Percy would be a charming and calm influence.

My sister also took him to visit the school quite often when her children started school.

They ran a story in the local newspaper at the time because he was so popular.

Maybe someone on here might remember him as a child.

Health and safety probably wouldn't allow this in dental surgeries now, which is a shame.

IamMaz · 23/04/2025 11:22

@ OuchyEars That’s an interesting point. By law they should allow Assistance Dogs in. However, ‘emotional support’ dogs are something completely different. In my opinion, those (and any other animals) should only be allowed in at the owner’s discretion. Not sure where that leaves larger establishments though…

I don't know about silliest but I was in an M & S food shop on Saturday- it was one off because I never usually buy M & S food - and there was a woman shopping there with a dog in her trolley. It was a small dog lying on a blanket . I stress it was not a guide dog or hearing assistance dog.

I was actually disgusted.

Since when were people allowed to disregard hygiene laws in this manner?
And the staff can't have failed to see this dog.

Wouldn't bother me seeing a dog in M&S.
Disgusting is totally over the top.

Well perhaps you don't have a particularly high standard of hygiene.

To a house viewing.. I guess they wanted to see if the dog liked it!

I did that and he did. 50 years ago in January. There have been a few dogs since then

A bit different with a human though. I mean, if it was a man, then you will have reason to worry.
Dogs are not going to have impure thoughts about humans.

Before my dog was neutered he never bloody stopped having impure thoughts about my leg.

cheedle · 23/04/2025 12:56

Stayed in a hotel on New Years Eve - the couple in the room next to us left a huge young dog in their room and went out partying. Dog destroyed the door trying to get out and howled till they came rolling back in around dawn. Madness.

What a miserable bunch so many of you are.

To answer the question, there's no such thing as a silly place to take a dog, they're as much a part of the family as anyone else.

Nah -
dentist
graduation
standing at the barriers for hours watching the London Marathon
the funeral of someone (might be welcome, but should not be assumed)
the toddler area of a play park
the no-dog beach

The above are all silly places to take a dog. Dogs are not people and are not included in when people refer to their family.
