Silliest place you’ve seen a dog owner take their dog

To ask where the silliest / most inappropriate place you’ve seen a dog taken by the owner

Inspired by recent posts complaining about dogs being everywhere in cafes etc

Yesterday in our local Cathedral Easter service , a dog was taken up to the altar for communion with its owners. I’ve seen it all now 😃
I was unfortunately unable to see if they attempted to snaffle a bit of bread for the dog , but it honestly wouldn’t have surprised me
Just why ?

It's always been anti-dog. And anti-cat.

It's bizarre as it's not something I've ever seen in real life.

More people dislike other people's pets than admit it IRL because they don't want to upset people. They can vent about it on an anonymous forum (and so probably exaggerate their dislike when posting because they're letting off steam iyswim).

I don't know why a few posters saying they don't like dogs is always interpreted as "mumnet hates dogs" - there is an entire topic dedicated to dog-owners/dog-lovers!

in clarke's shoe shop

Not getting this.
Is it a silliest place because they don't wear shoes?

In Asda, a huge Alsatian doing the weekly food shop with two owners, one 100% could have waited outside.

They've done well with the training if Fido is doing the weekly shop! Wink

I know, it's just a silly thing to say, there are plenty of dog owners contributing to this discussion, as well.

Sisuu · 21/04/2025 10:36

Yes. I think it’s safe to say many on MN love dogs, some of MN are ambivalent about dogs, and a few posters (perhaps the same gorgeous select few, with different user names, who dribble on about MN being ‘anti trans’, when it clearly is not), don’t like dogs.

All of MN dislikes bad owners of dogs.

Well he was just obeying the signs which say dogs must be carried on the escalator.

Yes, the signs are very clear - children under 5 and dogs must be carried.

I manage a dental surgery.
absolutely raging woman last week insisting that it was fine as it was a clean dog (we do a lot of oral surgery and a few rooms are sterile areas)
decided to combine it’s walk with her scheduled check up, furious that she had waited 4 months for the appointment and was now forced to reschedule.
I suggested tying it up outside, she said no it’s a west highland terrier!
her suggestion was that I have one of my staff stand outside with it instead.
just to add to the CF ‘ness, she then left me a poor Google review.
mind boggles!

I’m saying that in some Catholic Churches I’ve been in you would have been lucky to hear the yapping over the babies crying and chattering toddlers.

It doesn’t sound like a peaceful place of worship at all. Are there no rules in place asking the congregants to take noisy children and babies out?
Is the line of thought “oh well, I can’t hear anyway, might as well bring Fido with us”

Unbelievable! Some people's entitlement is off the scale!

People can self declare their dogs as assistance dogs now and in doing so shops would be discriminating by not allowing them in, even in supermarkets, if the dog isn't controlled then you can ask them to leave but that is often a contentious point in itself - blame the legislation behind it all - not the shops!! The wording is deliberately written so as to discourage but pointedly doesn't permit them to be banned

Yet there are multiple people on here blaming the shops, again

Would they though? As far as I know only dogs for the deaf and blind are legally recognised as assistance dogs. Unless it's been challenged or clarified recently it's a grey area as to whether any other needs means it can be classed as an 'assistance' dog. It could probably do with clarifying tbf!

Someone I know said she was allowed to have her dog next to her on a flight back from the US as it was her ‘support dog’. I’m not sure that could’ve been true.

There was an emotional support dog sat behind us on an 11 hour flight back from the US last summer. It didn't have its own seat. It was on the floor under the seat, then sometimes sat the owners knee. I didn't hear it bark but it did walk up and down the aisle a few times!

It’s just some churches are extremely tolerant of children’s noise.

Self-declared "assistance" dogs have no legal standing (in the UK). People just buy a vest for the dog online. They are not the same as official guide dogs for people with disabilities. But people get away with it because shops etc either don't know or are afraid that challenging the person will get them into trouble.

It went 11 hours without needing to relieve itself?

Why is mumsnet suddenly anti dog?

Because they won the trans argument and need a new hobby

Our beagle can easily go 18 hours without peeing when it's raining - 11 hours would be nothing 😂

I have no idea! I wondered this myself. That dog had a lot of will power and strong bladder :-)

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 21/04/2025 08:24

There’s a huge anti dog sentiment on mumsnet. Honestly some posters froth at the mouth about the mere existence of dogs. Can be quite entertaining to see how unnecessarily irate they can get.

I don't think it's anti dog, I think it's anti shit on the pavement, anti aggressive dogs, anti owners expecting dogs to be treated like humans, anti owners treating dogs like accessories.

Oh and it's not just on Mumsnet. I just think people are more honest here. Quite a few of my friends slag off other friend's badly behaved dogs but wouldn't say anything to their face.

YourAzureScroller · 21/04/2025 10:50

Had someone sneak a puppy in a rucksack type bag into the cafe I work in not safe for the poor dog at all, they new we dodnt allow dogs in the cafe as locals and we have signs on the doors

Poor pup was probably only 7/8 weeks old definitely not old enough to have had it's full vaccinations and fed it cheesecake
When asked to leave they said it was a service dog

I love dogs, keep treats on my pocket and have 2 of my own

I'm always interested in the equivalency between dogs and children. Do you think, in time, dogs would learn to be quiet, understand the meaning of prayer and gain something from the liturgy?

Of course, they are planning on having little Poppy dog confirmed and have already bought her a white lacy dress.

Dumbdog · 21/04/2025 10:56

Valeriekat · 21/04/2025 10:29

Of course they are! I expect they don't have anything better to do.

Well, they offer, I don’t ask.

So unless you are suggesting they don’t have agency or can’t comfortably say hello to the kids and glance occasionally at a dog, I think they’re fine.

Saw a dog on the Tube the other day. Didn't think they'd be allowed. Woman had it in a large bag on her knee. It was quite a long journey too and of course I spent the whole journey wondering where it would go to the loo if caught short and who would have to clean it up.

When I was a child, we used to take our German Shepherd from Croydon to Cockfosters to visit my mother's friend.

The dog was really used to trains and tubes, and just used to sit quietly on the floor on the trains and while waiting on the platform. I have a vague recollection that we had to use the stairs in the tube station because dogs weren't allowed on escalators, but that may be wrong. I know we always had to go upstairs on buses because they weren't allowed on the lower deck though.

The dog was really used to public transport and never caused a problem. I've had 3 dogs of my own and they've always been fine with it, too.

Saying TWANW is not vilifying trans women.

Describing them as ‘blokes in dresses’ and pointedly using the opposite pronouns is, though.

Same with endless dog whistle comparisons to predators.

As is shoehorning in anti-trans discussions into every possible thread. Like one about dogs, for example
