to not understand why Christians think Jesus died for our sins?

switcheroooo · 20/04/2025 10:06

If Jesus died for everyone's sins, does that mean people are not accountable for their actions? You can kill people, steal and lie but have a protected status because Jesus died for your sins.

How does this work? Why are people not responsible for their own sins? Where is the justice?

So it's fine to insult Christians on their most holy day rightho!

Love how to see how that pans out for Muslims at Eid, Jews at Passover and Hindus at Diwali.

No wonder Reform is gaining traction.

Is it insulting to discuss theological beliefs and state that you disagree with them? I don't think so, personally.

As the established religion of the state, it is inevitable that Christianity will attract more critique than other religions, if only because most of us know more about it - we are all exposed to it in ways that we are not exposed to other faiths. It is still seen as the "default" religion in this country, schools are still expected to have daily Christian worship etc. Obviously, that delivers benefits for the church, but it also means that people know enough about it to know what they don't like about it. Whether you like it or not, most people know far too little about Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism or Judaism to be able to engage in any kind of debate about their respective theologies.

That aside, I'm not sure what Reform has to do with this? Their ideology is completely incompatible with Christian teachings, so I don't suppose that any Christians will be going down the route of voting for them? Unless, of course, they are Christian in name only and don't actually buy into any of its moral teachings?

I can't say I've read the entire bible. Gates of hell awaiting I guess.

Which doesn’t exist other than to threaten people to believe - a control mechanism. Hardly the actions of this so called wonderful god?

Person lives a wonderful, sin-free life. They do not believe Jesus died for their sins. Lakes of fire await.

No, that isn't what the Bible teaches.

HausofHolbein · 20/04/2025 13:19

Parker231 · 20/04/2025 13:18

So you think I’ll go to hell as a good person?

I certainly don't, but that's what the bible says. Believe in this wholeheartedly, or to hell you go.

The concept of Jesus' sacrifice also has to be considered in the light of the story of Abraham.
Abraham and Sarah longed for a child and Sarah became miraculously pregnant with Isaac. They were filled with Joy.
However, God asked Abraham to sacrifice this miracle child. He was heartbroken but felt he had to do as God wished and climbed up a mountain and built a funeral pyre on which to sacrifice his beloved son. God stopped Abraham at the last minute, telling him that he did not want Isaac, he just wanted Abraham to have the faith in him to give him up.
God has asked Abraham to do what any parent would refuse to do.
With the story of Jesus, here we see God willingly giving up his only son, for the people that he created. A kind of continuation of the Abraham and Isaac story, God is doing what he asked of Abraham.

Sounds nasty.

Which doesn't exist - Hell, that place of fiery damnation doesn't even exist in Christianity. It's an interpretation and invention by humans, so even the myth of hell is not down to God, should God exist.

Your religion is threatening me with hell - hardly a nice belief to have for someone who has done nothing wrong.

Rhinohides · 20/04/2025 13:23

Not sure why you would think this OP? If you are aware Jesus died for our sins then you probably realise he said the greatest commandment was to love God then one another. Christianity is also based upon Judaism which draws its moral background from the 10 Commandments. It also forms the foundation of our current legal system which definitely doesn’t approve of the things you mentioned. Can you please explain why you believe the things you posted, than you

@Leafy3

The people who go to heaven are all alike in one way: they are sinners who have placed their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (John 1:12; Acts 16:31; Romans 10:9). They have recognised their need for a Saviour and humbly accepted God’s offer of forgiveness. They have repented of their old ways of living and set their course to follow Christ (Mark 8:34; John 15:14).

So yes, it is. You can't get to heaven as a non-believer, despite however well you live your life.

Probably why her Maj tried to keep him off the throne for so long.

I’m not a sinner so a better person than someone is a sinner but said they believe in gods/jesus.

I'm a Christian.
If you have truly changed your ways and believe, you will go to heaven.
If you slip up and are truly remorseful, you will go to heaven.

I don't shove my beliefs down people's throats.
If they don't believe then that's fine and I wouldn't moan about it.
What I don't like,is people slagging Christians off for our beliefs and start saying things like "go pray to your sky fairy" etc.

OK, and what I don't like is Christians slagging off humanity for simply being born (our "sins") and start saying things like if we don't believe, our sins will mean we will burn in everlasting torment so, you know, swings and roundabouts...

There was a very long thread on the Christian board which made this abundantly clear. No-one was able to explain why people who had lived sin-free lives were ineligible but those who had sinned, repented and believed were all good. Surely a kind God would want everyone.

Yeah, and there are longstanding rumours that the Royal family are all lizards. Some people are sadly stupid enough to believe any old crap that they read on the Internet!

BunnyLake · 20/04/2025 13:34

Leafy3 · 20/04/2025 12:37

My understanding is that it means no sin is a barrier to heaven as long as there is true repentance.

Otherwise some sins would condemn a person to Hell for eternity. It all gets a bit complicated: which sins are deserving of an eternity of punishment? What about context? Can you cancel out sins with good deeds?

Which is why for centuries Catholics had the concept of purgatory, which doesn't have a biblical origin and the Vatican removed it from Catholic dogma some years ago.

Of course, the concept of Hell Christians have had since medieval times also doesn't have a biblical basis, which throws a different light on the concept of dying for our sins.

Theological interpretations are immense, varied and complicated - there's been 2000 years of people trying to apply simple messages to all sorts of different situations and the powerful throughout history have used them for their own ends, too.

To those taking the opportunity to deride Christianity...My own view is that it doesn't really matter if God exists, if Jesus was his son who performed miracles, died for our sins and rose from the dead...

Historians are fairly unanimous that a man called Jesus once existed, lived in the middle East, was a religious teacher who preached a simple message: be kind to each other, share - don't hoard - resources.

The world would undoubtedly be a better place if we managed this.

The thing about repentance is what motivates it? Someone might cry and beg forgiveness to god and really believe they are truly sorry but subconsciously it could just be a fear of what happens after they die (a lot of repentance happens when someone knows they’re dying or getting old). A lot of repentance, even if sincere, can be self serving.
