My dog enhances my life.
You should get one.

Dogs are companions, that’s it
Your life and your lifestyle are a result of human intervention

Invention.

Intervention would mean someone stepped in and changed her life, without her wanting it.

Maybe look at a dictionary. Humans made those too.

And the hurt and trauma I have suffered are from humans too. My dog helped undo the pain.

No one needs to eat out, so that solves your problem.

Solves yours as well - you can dine at home with your dog.

I'm sad for you.

I can live without picking up animal shit from pavements, thanks.

You should maybe feel sad for the ones that have them as child substitutes.

I meant intervention
The teacher, the GP, all face to face all an intervention. were someone (who wasn’t a dog) undertook a procedure or task or action that directly impacted upon your life. Learning to read. That was an intervention via state mandated education an intervention by the state

But they do have pet dogs and pet dogs are allowed out in public. So...

Currently allowed. Things can change though.

Doesn’t need to, many restaurants welcome them 🤷🏻‍♀️

Fixed it for you.

I don't think it ever will. Dogs and humans have shared a special bond for thousands of years.

Ok, I might get a GP appointment then. What do I say? I love my dog and she helps my mental health. I need intervention. FFS.
I am known to MH services and they acknowledge that my dog is a protective factor.

A quick Google tells you what dogs can do

Jobs dogs do

search and rescue
detection dogs
service dogs
herding dog
therapy dogs
guide dogs
military dogs
police dogs
dogs to prevent seizure
sleigh dogs
wildlife management ( Airport runways)
hearing dogs
truffle hunter
wine inspectors
art protection
therapy
disease detection
Acting/ entertainment

All of which require training and then of course there companion and support.
(my dog is trained in 3 disciplines, and could be considered companion and support too).

I met a 'tech dog' in the vets. A police dog trained to sniff for discarded phones and sim cards.

I also know a lady who had a lot of dogs and all of them are trained in at least two things on your list each. Dogs like having a role.

It really is. Both those posters are horrible.

The majority of people on this thread advocating for fewer dogs in cafes etc don’t actually hate dogs (me included!) Some are even dog owners. It’s about whether it’s appropriate to bring them to indoor public places or whether there should be some consideration given.

A couple of you seem to have lost hold of your senses.

BruFord · 21/04/2025 22:36

Where I live in the US, it’s not common for dogs to be taken inside cafes or food shops. They usually sit at an outdoor table. I don’t know whether there’s an actual law or people just don’t do it. My dog would prefer to be outside tbh.

Just curious-are there any special rules that dog friendly shops/cafes have to follow in the UK, Obviously dogs couldn’t be allowed in food prep areas! Do the cafe owners have to follow special hygiene practices, for example or designate certain areas dog-free for customers who may have allergies?

I agree with PP’s who say that changing nappies at a table isn’t OK, it’s grim. Definitely should be done in the toilets. 🤢

A list of Dogs doing jobs that human train them for. Humans select and train the dog depending on their demeanour and capabilities eg Assistance and retrieval roles that the dog is trained for. Dogs don’t spontaneously and independently become sniffer dog etc. Valuable roles but doesn’t in itself elevate dogs or give them a new special status

Weird argument.
People don't spontaneously and independently become anything useful either.
A baby left in the forest is not going to walk out with a fucking degree and a job.

Zone2NorthLondon · 21/04/2025 23:22

Humans innovate and initiate eg healthcare, tech, arts, music. dogs don’t
Dogs are trained for tasks by humans and their dog compliance is an asset
Dogs and humans are different intellectually, emotionally, physically. you really can’t list dog roles as some kind of comparison or tah dah look what dogs can do

Most people are trained for specific tasks too. The vast majority are not innovators at all. Very few people are.
Humans are just animals too. Except we think we are better than everything else with a pulse. We really are not.

Zone2NorthLondon · 21/04/2025 23:29

Dogs are not human they lack our intelligence, problem solving, lack language etc
so no point listing all their dog attributes as if there is a comparison to be made
Dogs are inferior to humans. As I said your life,is shaped by human innovation. The fresh water you drink, your refrigerator ,the digital device your reading mn on,the internet, your phone. Did your dog innovate and invent, umm, no!

This is the problem. People like you who think humans are the superior species So superior, we are destroying each other and the planet.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of animal species are just living their best life on this rock... and "superior" humans are going to destroy it for them.

I don't think humans deserve to live TBH. We are vile.

The fact we are self aware, are emotionally intelligent, etc does not mean one jot in the scheme of things. It will be our downfall, and we will take all the animals down with us.
