I bloody love dogs, have had them all my life and currently have a small very friendly PomChi. I have never ever taken any of my dogs into cafes, shops, or generally just the high street. I have never felt the need to drag the poor things around on a lead where there are lots of people about (especially in the summer!). The poor things are better left at home having some peace and quite after a good walk. I'm sure some people who drag them around the town think this IS their walk 🙄

CamillaMacauley · 21/04/2025 08:45

I went to a dog friendly cafe yesterday, without a dog. There were at least 3 dogs there (it’s a big cafe so I didn’t see all of it). But the dogs I saw were quietly lying down. There was no barking, no bothering other customers. No smell of dog. I didn’t see any dogs on chairs or tables. If I hadn’t walked past these dogs on the way to my table I wouldn’t have known they were there.

Do you never take your dog out for a dog focused day such as walking in the countryside away from home? I’m forever going on days out to the coast or the Yorkshire dales, etc with my dog for a long dog walk and then have coffee and cake before driving home.

This is my experience too. I don't know of these horrendous places where the dog miasma means you can't smell your coffee and vicious dogs snarl as you make your way gingerly to your seat trying to save your cake from the ravenous beasts who will snatch it from your hand.

To those comparing a dog to a child,or children please have a quiet word with yourselves

No it's a relevant point, what we have nowadays is self entitled people that think their dogs or unruly or screaming children have the right to be everywhere! I read a post on here about two smelly dogs being in an art gallery, I've had to ensure screaming babies and toddlers in art galleries! Nowadays people get a dog or have a kid and try to avoid make any life changes or sacrifices! Parents didn't use to put small babies on 10 hour night flights because mummy and daddy want to go on holiday to Cancun but they do now! Numerous distressed babies keeping everyone awake all night! Not great for onward journeys when you land in London!

The odd dog in a pub or cafe was never an issue but now people are trying to take them everywhere even if the dog isn't calm enough for that environment.

I was in a cafe on Saturday morning, a dog was in sat on his owners shoulder being good as gold, I was more disturbed by the boys of about 6 and 8 next to me having their own mobile phone each that they never put down once! One kid hasd chicken nuggets with the chips and beans removed, it's like they are finger food so that they don't have to put phones down and use a knife and fork. Given all the press about the dangers of phones and being online you would think parents would stop shoving phones at young children.

The dogs aren't the issue, its the volume irresponsible self entitled adults that are around now!

I agree that both parents and dog owners seem to think they don’t need to make any changes or sacrifices to their lifestyle despite their decisions and responsibilities.

I also agree that some parents of young kids are awful. But this thread is about dogs, so I still don’t get what kids have to do with it?

Ive also has loads more unpleasant experiences with dogs than kids, including regularly being jumped on with muddy paws when Im out for a walk. No apology either, ever.

Yes when on holiday she will go with us everywhere (she would literally die in kennels) and she goes for a good walk from home once a day (v small dog so once very occasionally twice in summer months). But I wouldn't purposely pack her into the car to go shopping in my local High Street when I've got things to do there. I am lucky that she is ok to be left alone, I completely understand some are not.

Because it's a common behaviour from whether it's kids or dogs and kids and be a real nuisance to other people when parents don't keep them controlled in public. I've been in beer gardens a number of times with kids running around a table, knocking it and nearly spilling drinks etc. attitudes need to be altered in terms of both kids and dogs because it's the same root issue.

No I agree, i wouldn’t take my dog off into town to go shopping. But if doing a walk away from home so a day trip or a holiday then I might have her with me in a town (on holiday) or a cafe after a long dog walk.

So you have taken her into cafes when on holiday and can see the need for them?

The majority of dog owners don't take their dogs to the high street when they are browsing or running errands. It's a very small proportion that do this. But the vast majority will take them on days out or on holiday and therefore not be able to leave them at home while they have lunch.

HollieHock · 21/04/2025 10:08

As soon as you walk in to a restaurant now the first thing you are asked is "any allergies". I'm going to start saying "dogs"

I suspect they will be disappointed when any dogs and owners are not asked to leave. Then bitch about it on here.

IwantKandixxx · 21/04/2025 11:36

I agree. I have a DD with severe allergy to Dogs (as well as multiple other allergies), so if I see "Dog Friendly/Dogs Welcome" we don't go in.
It's more annoying when people come in with Dogs (to a place that doesnt state animals welcome, but are allowed to stay) when we are already there and We have to leave.
I love Dogs and grew up with them, but now I'm so aware. And I also don't think animals should be near food/eating areas.
And please, dog owners....don't let your dogs on public soft furnishings/chairs. This includes public transport! It's already hard enough trying to keep her safe!

That's a really good idea. As someone who is allergic to dogs I'm going to try this in the hope that dogs are turned away from places which do not advertise themselves as dog friendly

Zone2NorthLondon · 21/04/2025 13:42

Any Discussion about dogs in cafe & retail always digresses into well humans do that too as if that is a searing observation that nullifies any valid observation made about dogs
Slobbery Dog under table.humans do that too
Dog licking genitalia humans do that too
Dog with bare arse on table and seats humans do that too
Dogs in prams humans do that too

What happens if you do this, and there are already dogs in there? Will you expect them to be kicked out?

If it’s dog friendly they’ll just say we’re a dog friendly cafe.

Probably. Then bang on about entitled dog owners.

Lazlothevampire · 21/04/2025 13:52

I hate it.

And I’m a life long dog owner. I’ve only ever taken my dog somewhere to eat if we are on holiday and we can’t leave them, and then only if it’s outdoors in a place no where near other people. I wouldn’t sit inside and eat with a dog, not everyone wants to be around them, so I would never inflict mine on others.

Current dog is an absolute bellend as well, she’d be a nightmare.

YeOldeGreyhound · 21/04/2025 13:45

No, if there's dogs already there I would leave as I don't want to be hospitalised with an asthma attack.

Or they may prevent anyone bringing a dog in while I'm there

If you that allergic to dogs, then why go to a dog friendly cafe?
You can't go to a place that welcomes dogs then expect them to ban them for the duration of your stay. That would be very entitled of you.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 21/04/2025 13:58

Kardamyli2 · 21/04/2025 13:55

Or they may tell you that seventeen dogs have been in today, so you'll have to leave because they won't risk any liability if you come into contact with dog hairs.

8dateslater · 21/04/2025 13:58

I do agree there should be clearer signage if a place is dog friendly

Dog owners like me google it and find it/ask but I do get people might see zero signage and assume it's not then find it difficult when a dog walks in.

Equally dog friendly places should be properly set up

There's nothing more annoying then researching a dog friendly place, booking a table telling them you have dogs, to discover you're in a table in the middle of a room, with no space to tuck dogs out the way.

If you advertise as dog friendly, the tables should have enough space between them for dogs not to be in the way
