Just as the title says….i know it’s not a big deal but someone please tell me he’ll start branching out! He loves being comfy, not ND in any way really. COULD Have ADHD but that’s a whole other thread.
He’ll wear his school trousers but they are soft too…the two/three times he’s been required to look smart I’ve managed to bribe him to wear chinos, but the minute it was no longer a requirement he changes back into his joggers. I literally have to stick with the same colours of navy and black because they’re the only colours that look somewhat smart. Tell me he’ll grow out of this PLEASE 😅

Why? Joggers and hoodies are the in fashion at the moment and by far what everyone is wearing and they are comfortable.

IReallyLoveItHere · 19/04/2025 15:19

It sounds like you can get him to smarten when the occasion demands it so otherwise leave him be.

He'll be buying his own clothes soon enough, you can't tell him what to wear any more than he can tell you how to dress.

Whoonearthareyou · 19/04/2025 15:20

I dressed very differently at 9 to how I do now at 40ish, if that helps.

Zanatdy · 19/04/2025 15:20

My DS was the same. Afraid to say at 20, he is still the same. Only time he looked quite smart was during his internship, I bought him some chino’s and short sleeve shirts. Even his girlfriend said she liked the clothes I bought him. He’s not a fan of jeans, only shorts or tracksuit bottoms.

I would just love to see him in some nice jeans or something 😅 I see lots of kids look trendy and I think…oh well..I mean I think he’s bloody gorgeous and to be honest anything he wears looks good on him. I would just like him to branch out a bit maybe

My 9 year old is the same. Joggers or shorts. Not occurred to me to be bothered by it.

I'm more bothered by my 7 year old DD wanting to wear party dresses every day. The over dressing annoys me more than under dressing but I'm choosing to pick my battles

SlashBeef · 19/04/2025 15:22

My 12yo only wears joggers unless he's in school trousers. He even did in 34 degree heat in holiday. He does have ASD and I've given up with the battle tbh. He's comfy and happy so I just live in hope he won't get married in joggers or something 😅

yeah I think the only time he’ll change is when he has too…😅

Yanbu but for some reason Mumsnet thinks that the only alternative to joggers/leggings is a tailcoat and top hat...

It’s not without a battle or bribe to be honest so not the easiest

He may branch out, he may not. My ex was wearing trackies constantly at the age of 32.

I branched out as I got older and then back in again when I realised i was contributing to my own anxiety issues by forcing myself to wear smart pretty clothes that are extremely overwhelmingly uncomfortable (awaiting autism assessment now).

Perhaps just leave him be. I think it's trendy for kids now anyway.

Loveduppenguin · 19/04/2025 15:27

Yeah I’ll definitely leave him be, I would just love to be able to see him in different clothing at some stage…I’ll wait patiently I suppose 😅

DS 17 & 19 stopped wearing jeans at primary school and always wear joggers or shorts.

DS 17 has recently got 2 pairs of combats and I bought DS 19 some moleskin trousers so he’d look smart when he goes out. Before that he was clubbing in joggers!

if he’s comfortable let him wear joggers.

Decapitatedsausage · 19/04/2025 15:27

DS is 13, and stopped wearing jeans in lockdown and has never gone back. His school uniform is very formal so he CAN look smart, but the rest of the times I struggle to get him out of shorts never mind joggers. His friends all seem very similar. I wouldn’t worry as fashions will change and I’m sure your son will dress appropriately for any occasion that demands it (weddings etc)

PeriMoan · 19/04/2025 15:28

My 15 (almost 16) year old is exactly the same. But he smartens up when he needs to. Has recently been looking at suits as he has a formal do in a few months time and I have no doubt he'll wear it when necessary, but straight back into the track bottoms ASAP.

I don't mind too much. I do find it slightly strange that he doesn't even own a pair of jeans, but he doesn't like them so I've not replaced the barely worn ones when he outgrew them.

I must admit my kids were the same for many years but now seem to be expanding to different colours, etc. But I never pushed them.. They are in their 20s now.

For what it's worth, I dressed my boys in pink and flowery stuff but they seemed to prefer navy and black for a long time in their adolescence.

Marmalady75 · 19/04/2025 15:31

My DS is exactly like the same. Joggers or shorts (apart from soft school trousers). He says jeans and chinos are uncomfortable. I’ve given up trying 🤷‍♀️. You know yourself that if you are wearing something uncomfortable that you spend half the day pulling at it and wishing you were wearing something else.

NotSmallButFunSize · 19/04/2025 15:33

My 15yr old DS only wears joggers - not bothered tbh, I would hate it if someone was forcing me into clothes I didn't want to wear

interestedwhy · 19/04/2025 15:34

It’s what my teen boys wear . I think how they hold themselves is much more important and means they look casual not scruffy .

MindlessDaydream · 19/04/2025 15:34

Like others have said it's probably a comfort issue. I have a slightly longer right leg and most cuts of hard pants are incredibly uncomfortable. I'm with other posters, pick your battles, it's not a big deal especially given what is fashionable currently.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 19/04/2025 15:36

Asda George range has some cotton cargo trousers with elasticated waist. My ds hated jeans. Had a polyester allergy so couldn't wear normal school trousers. I bought him similar trousers to the current range at Asda for school, and the combat camouflage ones as an alternative to joggers for home.

menopausalfart · 19/04/2025 15:37

I have sensory issues around material. My DM says she could never get me to wear clothes when I was a child. I like natural, soft material. I'll wear jeans, now and again, but I can't wait to get home and take them off

How would you like it if someone told you they'd like you to "branch out a bit"?

@Loveduppenguin have you ever tried these smarter joggers for DS? Like these ones.... https://www.next.co.uk/style/su324041/q49709

I can tell you now he would turn his nose up at the strip down the centre 🤣🤣
