9yr old DS only wears joggers/tracksuit bottoms!?

Just as the title says….i know it’s not a big deal but someone please tell me he’ll start branching out! He loves being comfy, not ND in any way really. COULD Have ADHD but that’s a whole other thread.
He’ll wear his school trousers but they are soft too…the two/three times he’s been required to look smart I’ve managed to bribe him to wear chinos, but the minute it was no longer a requirement he changes back into his joggers. I literally have to stick with the same colours of navy and black because they’re the only colours that look somewhat smart. Tell me he’ll grow out of this PLEASE 😅

Honestly bigger battles to fight! My 14 DS would wear shorts 24/7 if he had a choice! But as soon as his “cooler” mates got into clothes he has followed and will buy and wear jeans, branded joggers etc

Make the most of the simplicity of it all - no one but you cares what he is wearing and as long as he is prepared to smarten up when asked I don’t see a problem

My 15yr old DS only wears joggers - not bothered tbh, I would hate it if someone was forcing me into clothes I didn't want to wear

I’m not going to force anything…just secretly wish 😅

They all do now. My kids are older and they travel in them to the airport, go shopping in them, etc. I wouldn't have been seen dead in them outside the house at their age. I hope actual fashion makes a comeback soon!

GoatCatTaco · 19/04/2025 15:45

About to be 14.
Still only seen in jersey shorts or joggers outside of school uniform.

We came to an agreement about 8 years ago. I don't buy him any clothes other than what he likes, but if I insist, he will wear an old pair of his brothers trousers. tbf, I've never asked him to wear jeans (they are the most disliked for him), but do occasionally request chinos.

Don't think he's neurodiverse, but he certainly has a preference in fabric feels - his face when I bought him a set of jersey bedding, rather than polycotton!!!

How would you like it if someone told you they'd like you to "branch out a bit"?

Well I don’t say it to his face so don’t worry

Neither of my DS' even own jeans or chinos. They live in joggers & shorts. 1 is 20, the other is 7. It's never bothered me.

The oldest has trousers for when they have to go into their office for work (a few times a month) but that's it.

Ted27 · 19/04/2025 15:47

I'm 60 and have reverted to joggers pretty much every day.
Buy there are joggers and joggers. I have some quite smart ones but I am very aggrieved to have been forced into buying a frock as I'm my son's plus 1 at a reception at Buckingam Palace.
My son has ASD and struggled for a long time with zips and fastenings of any description. He was quite chuffed when we discovered denim joggers so he got the look of jeans but the comfort of joggers

ThisFluentBiscuit · 19/04/2025 15:49

Many people don't wear actual clothing now. They wear leggings (which looks like they've forgotten to finish dressing), trainers instead of real shoes, flimsy rubber flip-flops in towns and cities, jogging bottoms instead of trousers or nice jeans, sweatshirts, hoodies, or T-shirts instead of shirts, shirts worn like jackets instead of actual jackets, and God forbid that a shirt is ever tucked in. Then there's the ever-diminishing "clothes" worn by teens and young women. This is all part of an endless lowering of standards in the last few decades. I don't know where the natural end is - everyone walking around in loin cloths?

My mum was young in the Fifties and Sixties, and she'd say, "We were smart back then!" I think it's a pity that people don't make more of an effort with their clothes these days. When you look at photos from the Fifties, everyone looked so nice!

So, OP, your son is bang on-trend!

arcticpandas · 19/04/2025 15:49

My 15 year old ASD son will only wear joggings. It doesn't bother me but my husband would like him to look smarter. I told him "good luck with that". He tried but gave up. My DS11 wears trousers/jeans unless he's doing sports. He's lazy and wears whatever I put infront of him in the morning.

Does the dress code say that women have to wear a dress? 😲 I'd have thought smart trousers and a jacket would have been OK??

ThisFluentBiscuit · 19/04/2025 15:54

Are joggers what used to be called tracksuit bottoms? Or are they a posher version of tracksuit bottoms? I'm 50 and out of the loop.

I couldn't agree more. Nowadays you wouldn't even be able to find this type of clothes in many shops though, apart from taylors, House of Fraser, John Lewis, etc.

Thank you! It's a pity, because I see a lot of people who would look amazing if they smartened up!

I think the pandemic really put the nail in the sartorial coffin. People got into their comfies at home and that was that, really!

scotstars · 19/04/2025 15:57

My 9yo is the exact same he has 1 pair of jeans but never wears them.
BTW not the point of your thread but ADHD is a ND condition and many people with ADHD have sensory issues

Tiswa · 19/04/2025 15:57

Loveduppenguin · 19/04/2025 15:20

I would just love to see him in some nice jeans or something 😅 I see lots of kids look trendy and I think…oh well..I mean I think he’s bloody gorgeous and to be honest anything he wears looks good on him. I would just like him to branch out a bit maybe

But joggers are trendy - it is pretty much all my DD 16 wears at the moment and trust me she cares about what is fashionable!

Ted27 · 19/04/2025 15:57

@ThisFluentBiscuit

I was being a bit flippant, I wear skirts occasionally in the summer. I've bought a linen shift dress, it's smart enough without being too dressy for my somewhat casual tastes these days so I will wear it again.
I'm more concerned about shoes as I haven't worn shoes since I left the office for lockdown.

Trainers are apparently a bit of a no no at Buck House

HuffleMyPuffle · 19/04/2025 15:58

Ahhh the clothing snobs are out

People don't need to be in suits and skirts and shirts to look good

You'll be on the grass, which might be soggy if it's rained. Maybe stick with flats - or, if you want to be a bit smarter than that, I reckon wedges are a good option for grass. And they come in all heights, including low ones.

Glad to hear that female guests aren't forced into wearing dresses or skirts though!!

“Look amazing if they smarten up”

such narrow, judgemental comments

what does it matter that you don’t like the clothes they do? Are you being forced to wear them? Why should some people get to determine what is smart and what isn’t? Because else’s face it - what was smart on the time of Elizabeth 1 would raise a few eyebrows now , so smart isn’t sone fundamental truth but a reflection of rigid social norms. Social norms that favor certain brain types. I other words a form of discrimination.

what really matters - a kind heart, loyalty, intelligence , self awareness, are independent of clothing choices

It's not snobby to think that good clothing usually looks better than ultra-casual, unstructured clothing.

When people wear actual clothes that fit them well, they look amazing. So much better than tracksuits etc, which just look slobby. It doesn't have to be formal, expensive clothing, but I think almost everyone looks better in smart casual than in loungewear/sportsgear.

Snorlaxo · 19/04/2025 16:06

My ds is an adult now but hated wearing jeans. He likes cargo trousers which are soft and fashionable

Some of us have standards, some of us don't!

You could turn this around and say exactly them same thing about the current fashion of joggers and other types of lounge wear. Many people wear them not because 'they look good in them' or to be comfortable, but because it's been dictated by influencers and clothing retailers as the current trend, and they don't have the confidence to dress outside this box of grey, black & beige jersey.

DrCoconut · 19/04/2025 16:09

My big question is which school trousers are they? I desperately need some that my jogger loving DS will wear. You can get pull on girls trousers but no boys version 😫

Biglumpycustard · 19/04/2025 16:10

My nearly 14 year old son, only wears joggers and hoodies and he won’t wear branded either.
