To think I can't be the only person who doesn't know a single trans person

Seriously.

The news is full of people worrying about how the SC ruling will affect people who identify as trans.

Where are they? Not in my office (large organisation), my family or social groups. I don't come across any in the village where I live or when I go into town.

DD is at university and doesn't know any trans people.

Surely, I can't be the only one?

So how is often is a dress needed to be worn for the man to be trans?

It makes no sense for clothes, hair and name choice to be the determining factor here. I have short hair and rarely wear a skirt or dress. So what! I'm still a woman and no one would ever be in doubt about that.

How do you know? Unless you see them naked, you can't tell with a lot of people.

You absolutely can

All these devastated people - why not put your efforts into campaigning for third spaces???

In the case of TW, it's not what they want. They NEED the validation they are women that only comes from accessing women's single sex spaces.

I been watching a lot of news items the past couple of days and there's lots of "I'm worried about my trans friends. We stand with the trans community."

And I'm thinking, do you really know any trans people cos I bloody don't and think the majority don't.

Virtual signaling.

These are meaningless empty messages. It's like tweeting "thoughts and prayers" after a tragedy.

Are you trying to suggest they don’t exist?

Not at all. I'm just amazed at the impact they've had when they are so few in number.

Which is why the ruling was essential. Once again, very sadly, a tiny minority of a minority group (who need their own protection) was trying to ride roughshod over the hard fought for rights of women and girls.

localnotail · 18/04/2025 07:05

I dont know any personally but my friend worked with one. Also, I see a lot out and about - one the tube and out on the street (London).

Women can always tell, we’re just often too polite to say so. TW never pass.

If certain rights are accorded to females in law, then they are complications if trying to extend them to people who are legally male.

All of this just illustrates the legal mess that had been created, if we try to treat people as legally something different to their biological sex.

Mydietstartstomorrow · 18/04/2025 07:07

Ecocool · 17/04/2025 23:24

Who is "afraid" of them?

Women are afraid of predators. We don't know what they typically look like however typically they are not female. They are male.

If a male disguises himself as a woman, then I have every right to be scared.

So you are also afraid of all men that are just men? Or just men that dress as women? Wow you must be permanently afraid then that must be exhausting do you leave your house?!

Are you truly telling us you've lived your whole life and are unable to tell a man from a woman?

Really?

Don't be ridiculous.
You know exactly what I mean

I don't think they actually want third spaces, they want women's spaces.

BeingScouseIsMySuperpower · 18/04/2025 07:09

In the past 5 years I’ve worked with 2 trans men, a non binary, and 3 trans women. The TM were teens, the non binary about 20, and the 3 TW all middle aged, 50+ with former wives, DC and DGC. They all share our female changing room. The young TM say the male changing room is too intimidating, but if you slip up and call one she, you’ll end up in a HR meeting and patronised about being old, and ignorant. The TW all use our changing room and seem really pleased with themselves.

I don’t live in my hometown, and where I live there are a lot of TW. Whenever I go out I see at least 4 TW. They are all 50+ and dress in the most awful caricature of a woman, nothing actually like one you see in real life or, I notice that they are dressed identically to the woman they are with, using them as their muse and even wearing a wig like their hair.

I don’t have an issue with the TM, non binary, or young TW. It’s these older men dressed like strippers or stealing their wives identity that have ruined it for the other transpeople and I won’t share a space with them.

localnotail · 18/04/2025 07:11

And BTW you can always tell - MTF, at least - even if they look beautiful/ very feminine - there is always something. Not even mentioning some MTF I have seen that are literally just guys in female make up, wig and dress.

Though I accept there could be some that 100% pass so no one notices.

Shows your ignorance really. Hopefully the current media presence will help educate you. Minority groups mattering and making an impact shouldn’t be so surprising to you.

I don't think their existence or the fact that they wish to fight for their own rights is surprising.

What most people are struggling to understand is how such a small minority has managed to get its rights prioritised to such an extent that they were allowed to take priority over the rights of 50% of the population.

on the whole they just want to peacefully live their lives. It’s the right wing press and transphobes that want to vilify them

helpfulperson · 17/04/2025 23:14

But you dont know that you can tell all trans women because if you cant tell you wouldnt know. Ive known a couple who were obvious, one i was surprised when I found out and someone with a gender neutral name i couldnt decide and it was only the third time I met them i knew and that was only because a friend used their pronouns so Im still not 100% sure.

I think people find it comforting to think they 'always know' but they dont

Men can never get rid of their voice, the size of their hands and feet don’t change and their gait is such an obvious giveaway, and of course the adam’s apple.

TheAmusedQuail · 18/04/2025 07:14

I've known a few. A book shop owner many many years ago. A couple within the art community I once moved in. In a town I used to live in, there was an old man, clearly non-binary. And someone I supported for a while, with mental health issues (unrelated to their trans status).

Only had an issue with one of them, and my issue wasn't in relation to their being trans. They were a generally difficult person and I avoided them due to that.

HelenWheels · 18/04/2025 07:14

my dd knows a couple but she is 25
i knew one, but they changed their mind

Do they want to live peaceful lives by inserting themselves into women’s spaces, sports, prisons, rape crisis centres and hospital wards? Where the vast majority of women don’t want them to be there? It’s not peaceful for women is it?

I'm genuinely baffled by what you mean here.

A man but also 'clearly non-binary'?

One of my oldest school friends was previously female (and still is, if you go off the latest supreme court ruling). He has undergone full gender reassignment and has a GRC. I would be shocked if pretty much anyone guessed he was born a woman. He's high up in the police force and a good looking man, expecting his first child with his wife. For those lacking in sympathy for trans people, I suggest you look up people like Alexis Blake. I'm completely understanding of the need to protect women, particularly in prisons and local toilets, but I also think trans people have every right to feel safe and protected too.

Some people on this thread seem to have been confused between transgender and transvestite. They're two very different things. I don't personally have an issue with either.

I would argue the 'movement' has confused things for us.
I'm aware of Alexis Blake from social media and she is what people would call a 'real' transwoman.
She's undergone lots of surgeries and, generally speaking, there really is nothing about her that says male.
I really felt for her following the ruling.

Someone like Alexis is a WORLD away from the likes of Isla Bryson, who is quite obviously a man in a dress, who wants to takes advantage of access to women-only spaces.

IMO it is these people who have hijacked the trans movement and made things difficult for people like Alexis who are just trying to live their lives. She even says herself in her update post-ruling how some trans people haven't helped the cause. And she's right.
