To let you know that Ocado think women’s rights are “hateful political views”?

Have a look at MNHQ’s post on this thread: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5316215-thank-you-mnhq?reply=143605436&utm_campaign=reply&utm_medium=share

“When we included a call to clarify the definition of sex in the Equality Act in our 2024 Mumsnet Manifesto, Ocado – who had been excited about a partnership – abruptly pulled out, citing Mumsnet’s “hateful political views”. Despite repeated attempts to explain our position – as a platform committed to amplifying women’s voices – they’ve refused to speak to us ever since.”

I was about to start shopping with them for occasional “stocking up” deliveries but they won’t be getting a penny of my money if this is their view of women’s rights. Obviously not everyone feels as I do but I should imagine women make up the majority of their customers. I won’t support a business that thinks women’s rights - or even just women being given a space in which to speak and discuss - is “hateful”.

So fuck off, Ocado, and you can take your hateful political views with you.

I don't post much on here anymore but just wanted to take a moment today to thank Mumsnet {mention:MNHQ} and Justine in particular for standing strong...

I used to do a weekly shop with them (for years) but stopped several years ago when they said the dictionary definition of ‘woman’
as ‘adult human female’ was ‘hateful’. There was a big furore about it on the feminism board. They’ve never had a penny from
me since.

I’m not shocked to hear they are doubling down still but, really, what kind of bonehead goes so out of their way to alienate their main customer base?

They can get to fuck and stay there.

KnewYearKnewMe · 17/04/2025 20:35

I would like more detailed information about this. Not because I doubt it, but i would like clarity, as if I am to boycott something, I need more details. If anyone can link to statements by Ocado, I would appreciate it and act accordingly,

I care and in absolutely gutted I've seen shopping without them all this time I don't understand how I missed it.

I hope this gains some traction on twitter. I can't believe it!!

I’m not on Twix much so I doubt it will get much traction, but feel free to retweet!

Edited

I don’t think Ocado said anything publicly, it was just Justine’s post on the thread in the first post about Ocado pulling out of the partnership because MN backed the idea of the Equality Act being clarified regarding biological sex.

I think you'll find that most people don't care about a company's values. Look at Primark, there are concerns about labor conditions in its supply chain, alleged design theft, its impact on small businesses, and claims og human rights abuses, people still flock there knowing this.

Look at how many people are opposed to slave labour and children being sexually abused, and then look at Shein sales figures...

KnewYearKnewMe · 17/04/2025 20:50

Thanks @SidewaysOtter- I understand the strength of feeling about this,

i find it hard to boycott a company based on ‘Justine said they backed out because of MN’s hateful views’ without more detail.

as I said, I don’t doubt it, but it’s too flimsy for me and I’d like it if @mnhqcould add more details.

FruityCider · 17/04/2025 20:59

Brilliant, just signed up, thanks for the pointer.

EasterParadeHats · 17/04/2025 21:01

@KnewYearKnewMe look at her post it's linked on feminist board.

thestudio · 17/04/2025 21:02

Blimey that's £800 a month they've lost from us.

BunfightBetty · 17/04/2025 21:06

What?? I just took delivery of a £185 order from Ocado about an hour ago. I had no idea they’d waded in on the wrong side here.

Beggars belief they don’t give a shit about women’s rights, when I bet the majority of the people ordering from them are female. Fucking fools. Well I’m cancelling my smart pass and I won’t be shopping with them again unless they do a full u-turn, apologise and demonstrate their commitment to women’s safety and rights.

Dammit, I’m going to have to find another supermarket delivery option. Sainsburys are shite in our area, they robbed me of £70 worth of groceries a couple of years ago and I won’t shop with them again. I might have to give Tesco a go.

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 17/04/2025 21:10

This is so annoying because I bloody love my ocado deliveries.
I’m housebound and need to buy pretty much everything and anything online.
Between boycotting companies which are anti women, trying to make sure my choices are ethical to animals / workers / the environment and doing my best to avoid any products from trump’s america I may soon starve in an empty house!
I think I might email ocado and tell them that I hold “hateful political views” and ask if they want to cancel my smart pass and lose my business.

Youtookmyhandle · 17/04/2025 21:11

@WooleyMunky I just had a look. Its app attracted around 42.6 million downloads worldwide in the first 15 weeks of 2025, apparently.
My point is that people still flock there. Also, if it makes you feel as if you're at least doing something, go ahead. As people say, something is better than nothing.

NilByMuff · 17/04/2025 21:16

I discovered during lockdown they don't deliver to my postcode. Too rough innit.
Anyway, they can fottfsofoafosm 😡

Tutorpuzzle · 17/04/2025 21:27

Add me to the list of account cancellers. And what was very satisfying is that you are able to write a message when going through the deletion process (I was civil!).

I am undoubtedly a lurker on MN on this subject, but want to express my appreciation to MN and all the brilliant posters who have taught me so much. However much the significance of yesterday’s ruling is being downplayed in much of the media, it seems rather important to me.

EasterParadeHats · 17/04/2025 21:34

@Tutorpuzzle I agree, this passed me by for many years because I didn't get the significance of it all until I thought one day to try and understand all the Trans post's.
I was blown away to be honest and the more I looked into it the more aghast I became.
One testament in particular struck me that of a woman writing to parliament about the impact her trans dad had on her life and how he fetishised it and tried to cross boundaries with her. She then went into highlight the depths of capture, even into womens refuge.

TheProvincialLady · 17/04/2025 21:40

I’m not surprised to hear it. I was one of those who cancelled my subscription, told them why and stopped shopping with Ocado when they made their ridiculous twitter statement. A woman rang me to try to persuade me to keep my account but her apology was of the ‘we shouldn’t have waded into this issue online’ variety rather than the ‘of course women are adult female humans and to claim that it is hate speech to say so is ridiculous and offensive’ it should have been. They must have missed out on many thousands of pounds of my business since. Waitrose should send them a thank you card!

EasterParadeHats · 17/04/2025 21:42

I can't use twitter but I wonder how many companies have actually cut somewhere like Mumsnet dead like this?

I wonder if jk herself knows?

AuraBora · 17/04/2025 21:42

Thanks for sharing. I'll definitely never use Ocado now!

PatsFruitCake · 17/04/2025 21:43

I struggle to get my head round why a company who's primary business is selling groceries would decide they need to spend time "educating their customer base". It's like the ultimate in mansplaining.

Just sell food you fuckers 🙄

JandamiHash · 17/04/2025 21:45

Thank you OP, I was gonna do my first shop tomorrow and will be using Waitrose instead.

Sarah2891 · 17/04/2025 21:48

I didn't know but it won't stop me using them. They've always been a great service.

I think you'll find they think the same as Ocado.

MyShiningTigerLight · 17/04/2025 21:51

It as if these retail places forget who does the weekly shopping! 😂

What have Waitrose said on the issue? I have missed this.
