To let you know that Ocado think women’s rights are “hateful political views”?

Have a look at MNHQ’s post on this thread: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5316215-thank-you-mnhq?reply=143605436&utm_campaign=reply&utm_medium=share

“When we included a call to clarify the definition of sex in the Equality Act in our 2024 Mumsnet Manifesto, Ocado – who had been excited about a partnership – abruptly pulled out, citing Mumsnet’s “hateful political views”. Despite repeated attempts to explain our position – as a platform committed to amplifying women’s voices – they’ve refused to speak to us ever since.”

I was about to start shopping with them for occasional “stocking up” deliveries but they won’t be getting a penny of my money if this is their view of women’s rights. Obviously not everyone feels as I do but I should imagine women make up the majority of their customers. I won’t support a business that thinks women’s rights - or even just women being given a space in which to speak and discuss - is “hateful”.

So fuck off, Ocado, and you can take your hateful political views with you.

I don't post much on here anymore but just wanted to take a moment today to thank Mumsnet {mention:MNHQ} and Justine in particular for standing strong...

They definitely do,
They didn’t really think that one through

Youtookmyhandle · 17/04/2025 22:03

@MyShiningTigerLight I know plenty of men who do the weekly shop. My DH does it as I can bear food shopping.

StarDolphins · 17/04/2025 22:06

I’ve just changed from Tesco to Ocado & as I shop for myself & my mum, I spend over £200pw but I’m not happy with this at all😩

ZenNudist · 17/04/2025 22:08

Had no intention of shopping with them anyway. Don't they deliver for Morrison's? I bet Morrisons don't want dragging into a PR blunder like this. I mean, women (the adult human female type) must make up a very large percentage of their customer base.

CrackSpackle · 17/04/2025 22:12

News to me but I won’t be shopping with them again. Used to spend a fortune on Nike great as well until they had a dude modelling a sports bra.

Meadowfinch · 17/04/2025 22:14

QuillBill · 17/04/2025 19:36

People who give them money every week do care though. You don’t use them so you may not care.

They aren’t a glorified delivery boy either. They are a company whose gross profits are £796.4 million.

But they offer nothing unique, and can be easily dispensed with.

JustSawJohnny · 17/04/2025 22:39

Rightly or wrongly, Mumsnet has a bad reputation and I can understand why companies might want to avoid being linked to it.

I'm guilty of it myself. There are definitely people I'd never admit to using this site to, not because I feel bad about it but because they absolutely will not be convinced that Mumsnet isn't a literal hot bed of hate where every single thread is TERF dominated.

I cannot be arsed with it, or the judgement I'd receive for using it, even though they are wrong.

Anyway, I like Ocado and they're the best grocery delivery service I've ever used so I'll be staying.

JandamiHash · 17/04/2025 22:41

MN only has a bad reputation with people who don’t like it when women gather and talk about important things. Which is an alarming number of people.

They wouldn’t mind it if all we spoke about was breastfeeding, nappies and housework. They HATE that’s not all MN is about. It’s misogyny driven

SidewaysOtter · 17/04/2025 22:51

Rightly or wrongly, Mumsnet has a bad reputation and I can understand why companies might want to avoid being linked to it.

So why were Ocado happy to go into partnership the first place, knowing full well that MN is seen, in certain quarters, as a hotbed of feminist sedition (also known as “women discussing things”)?

They wanted to tap into a core customer base to make more money, I suspect, then flounced off when women dared have an opinion they didn’t like.

Exactly, they are flip flopping, it makes them look idiotic

Theseventhmagpie · 17/04/2025 23:04

I didn’t know this- I do now and they can foxtrot off 😡

CaptainCarrotsBigSword · 17/04/2025 18:36

Fuck off Ocado indeed.

Agreed.

This is so annoying because I bloody love my ocado deliveries.
I’m housebound and need to buy pretty much everything and anything online.
Between boycotting companies which are anti women, trying to make sure my choices are ethical to animals / workers / the environment and doing my best to avoid any products from trump’s america I may soon starve in an empty house!
I think I might email ocado and tell them that I hold “hateful political views” and ask if they want to cancel my smart pass and lose my business.

Edited

If you're housebound and don't have many other good alternatives of reliable supermarket delivery, you don't have to cut the branch you're sitting on.
There are so many annoying companies, plenty to choose from you can boycott instead 😉
This is similar to "I have 50€ and need to clothe 4 kids" - "you should boycott fast fashion and buy organic moonspun wool from the handmade farm".
If something is simply not possible, skip that part and maybe look for something else that would be possible instead.
Everybody does their part for the better, we don't have to all contribute the same part.

EasterParadeHats · 18/04/2025 08:04

Has anyone emailed ocado yet about this

AnSolas · 18/04/2025 08:33

[(Edit) PS i am not objecting to you opting to keep using the service ]

Did you miss that the management would have done their basic research before looking for a business expansion off the users of MN and only has a system meltdown when MN explained they supported women
Ocado – who had been excited about a partnership – abruptly pulled out, citing Mumsnet’s “hateful political views”

It suggests that they did reduce their profit making options for political reaons and/or the culture and therefore their onboarding checks has an anti-woman bias which keeps men as the "most important" sub-group in their community outlook.

I noticed they have a gender pay gap and want to have "40% female" employees in senior positions so appointing a female chimpanzee would tick the female box.

If MN has hateful political views what do the management think about the same view held by the majority of their employees.

TheMimsy · 18/04/2025 09:24

Realistically which high street shop or supermarket hasn’t said similar.

go check them all out. See what few shops you can now use.

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/04/2025 09:34

Thanks for sharing that OP. I'll add Ocado to my boycott list.

Helleofabore · 18/04/2025 09:36

I shall not be using Ocado again.

BunnyRuddington · 18/04/2025 09:38

Another saying that you for making me aware. I don’t shop with them often but I’ll make bloody sure I never do again.

Was just about to.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 18/04/2025 09:46

I did a regular weekly order with them for a long time. If you had a delivery pass, you could book the same slot every week.

When the pandemic hit, I was shielding due to being immunocompromised but relieved that I already had access to my regular weekly slot for grocery shopping.

Out of the blue Ocado cancelled my slot at short notice which left me without fresh food that week. Despite sending my shielding letter in, Ocado replied said they were unable to let me order as I was not as profitable as other customers!

Thankfully one of the other supermarkets offered me priority to their online shopping and I've remained a customer of theirs since.

So yeah, fuck off Ocado!

BunnyRuddington · 18/04/2025 09:51

If you email them you can select “delete my account” and there is a box where you can put your reasons why.

If enough people do this they might start to question what they are doing.

McLarenette · 18/04/2025 10:28

I shopped with Ocado for many years, probably about ten years, not sure but have cancelled my account with them this morning and used the website to tell them why.

CiscoTS · 18/04/2025 10:36

Sarah2891 · 17/04/2025 21:48

I didn't know but it won't stop me using them. They've always been a great service.

Same for me to be honest.

They still bring their shopping in bags 😆

They’re the only company who provide bags so I can bring the shopping in. 😔
