Person with MH problems should not be better off no working

Just that really. Someone working a minimum wage job full-time should not be worse off than someone not working due to mental health problems and claiming benefits.
I know several people in this situation claiming UC for housing benefit, council tax, ESA, disability top up and PIP. They all have no work record and few qualifications so would probably only get a minimum wage job. But their income would reduce. So they have a financial incentive not to recover.

I specified it because I do not know anyone with mental health problems who employ carers with their income. I do know people who do not work due to physical disabilities or issues such as brain damage, who employ carers. They are not well off as a result.

How many people with mental health issues on benefits do you no?

YourTidyScroller · 13/04/2025 17:06

Mumble12 · 13/04/2025 17:04

There isn’t one flat rate of PIP. Someone with mental health problems who doesn’t require as much hands on help as someone might with a physical disability, is likely receiving a lower rate.

There’s still time to quit while you’re ahead here. Other people’s medical conditions and income are not your business.

I understand that.
You support someone getting more money than they would get working full time at a national minimum wage job?

How do you know so many disabled people? Serious question.

FairlyTired · 13/04/2025 17:06

MidnightPatrol · 13/04/2025 16:57

Is the person claiming the raft of benefits described above really better off than someone working 40 hours on minimum wage? They would need to take home ~£1,700 a month, which seems unlikely.

Edited

It's quite hard to actually get 40 hours or even 35 hours in a minimum wage job. Lots offer 16/24 hours with overtime when available.

bestcatlife · 13/04/2025 17:08

Wrong. Someone working FT minimum wage with no MH issues is much better off than the person struggling with poor MH. They just are. End of.

These are friends. Mental health problems are common you know.

With friends like you who needs enemies!

The person on long term benefits isn't putting I towards a pension, will never get promoted, and their benefits could be removed or reduced at any second.

It's hardly the good life.

Another thread about this?🥱

Yeah, must be at least, oh what?, 15 minutes.?!

BloodandGlitter · 13/04/2025 17:08

You really think any amount of money in the world could convince me that wanting to kill myself everyday, staying awake all night scared to sleep because DH might stop breathing, self harming regularly because I can't handle my own emotions and not being able to leave the fucking house is better than recovering?
I'm actually shaking I'm so angry that you would presume people would rather fucking suffer every single day then recover for £2k a mon th?!

Lots of people working full time have mental health problems as well. Its not as black and white as you paint it.
Yes to get ESA and PIP your mental health issues have to be worse.

It’s just getting tedious now with all these types of threads …
idiots making out that:

Unfair Cash! (UC)
Pretend Illness Payments! (PIP)
Looks Clearly Well/ Really Able!(LCW/LCWRA)

How can people be so bitter? It’s like a perfectly well person being jealous of someone really ill needing frequent surgeries and appointments at hospital. Yes they are getting more spent on their healthcare because they need it likewise those getting disability benefits need that extra just from a different safety net pot. Imagine being jealous of the disabled. .

Do you always have a go at people whose literacy is not as good as yours?

OP posts:
BloodandGlitter · 13/04/2025 17:10

I don't pay for a carer, my DH stays home all day every day to make sure I don't fucking off myself. I don't need a stranger to do that.

Octavia64 · 13/04/2025 17:10

I have mental health problems and I get ESA and PIP and I employ a carer.

i don’t get UC because until I stopped working two years ago after working for twenty years I saved money so I’m also living on my savings.

Yes because god forbid someone is unkind or critical of others

YourTidyScroller · 13/04/2025 17:11

I am disabled. I have a physical disability.
You are all assuming there is a black and white situation of disabled can not work, non disabled can work.
It is tiresome.

OP posts:
Sirzy · 13/04/2025 17:12

One of the good things with the UC is that it’s not all or nothing. If someone works and earns over the working allowance their UC drops by 55p per pound over that allowance. So someone working will be better off than if they only claim benefits.

bestcatlife · 13/04/2025 17:12

  • exactly. Every day the same, no hope for the future, no prospects, no money for days out , holidays or anything nice ever. It must be an awful existence. I don't begrudge these people the measly sum they receive in benefits.
Flytrap01 · 13/04/2025 17:12

@YourTidyScroller companies need people on basic wages so they can make £££ profits instead. its the companies that should pay more overall.
if running a business is so profitable etc then pay the workers better

If they’re too ill to work then yes. I don’t think disabled people should have to live like paupers.
