Person with MH problems should not be better off no working

Just that really. Someone working a minimum wage job full-time should not be worse off than someone not working due to mental health problems and claiming benefits.
I know several people in this situation claiming UC for housing benefit, council tax, ESA, disability top up and PIP. They all have no work record and few qualifications so would probably only get a minimum wage job. But their income would reduce. So they have a financial incentive not to recover.

However at @YourTidyScroller I usually save if for judgemental folk.

I do not know. I did not use the phrase

What does this refer to?

Person with MH problems should not be better off no working

PIP, UC, LWRA

How much are they getting? For example, there are two types of PIP and you can receive different amounts. You say that these three friends get more than NMW through benefits, so how much in benefits does each get?

Hastentoadd · 13/04/2025 21:05

Mumble12 · 13/04/2025 20:49

You can disagree with the governments own figures if you like 🤷

professional psychiatrists will tell you it’s actually not very difficult to tell who is ‘faking’ poor mental health

I disagree, as how can they be sure, no one is going to admit to faking it

YourTidyScroller · 13/04/2025 21:05

@SenselessDrivel forgot that, I meant LCWRA

My dad faked mental ill health for ESA.

It's used towards food bills in my house due to an eating disorder. That's what's it's there for!

TheBuffetInspector · 13/04/2025 21:08

Look what you've done to a terrified population of the community.
Another benefits bashing thread.

You didn't even have the decency to word your post properly.

Are you having a good night defending yourself? Probably not.

Might be bedtime? Just putting if out there.
You've created a thread based on hate.
I don't think I need to say anything else.

I would think with all the knowledge on mental health out there now and info so widely and readily available that it wouldn’t be an extremely difficult thing to do unfortunately

Also different amounts of UC (LCW and LCWRA are different), and not everyone gets housing costs.

Yes so everyone on benefits for MH is faking then 🤔

My brother has been on ESA & PIP for decades.

He's bipolar, and it is only kept under control by 4-weekly injections of (iirc) aripiprazole. For the first two weeks or so after each injection, he's like a fucking zombie: speech slurred, mental functions really slow, short term memory shot, sleeping shedloads. Then he has a few days where he's almost normal, before he starts to get really hyper, has delusional thoughts and can't focus on anything, and talking utter nonsense.

What sort of job do you think he could do, OP? He'll be 60 in a few weeks and hasn't been well enough to work since his mid-20s. Who's likely to give him a job?

This sounds like a dreadful way for your brother to live, and poor management of his condition - can he speak to his doctors / specialists about having a weekly dose, at a quarter of the strength?

YourTidyScroller · 13/04/2025 21:06

My dad faked mental ill health for ESA.

My Dad threw himself off a cliff in Penzance.

Bingo!

True story BTW.

Stop now. Why are you trying to make others feel bad because your Dad was an arsehole.
I'll bet you my entire life that my Dad was a bigger arsehole than yours.

Am I attacking benefit claimants? No.
I understand bad MH. I've lived it.

Its not a competition.

... then jobs need to pay better.

blooshboon · 13/04/2025 21:17

Blame the goverment for not making minimum wage higher - not disabled people.

The government can say min wage needs to be higher, but they are not the ones paying it.
I have a relative with a cleaning company and she has to pay her staff more. Yet the companies she has contracts with wont pay more.

of course they will, we all have to pay more for goods and services as costs rise. If NMW rises, anyone they contract will have to pay staff more, so your relative isn’t at a disadvantage

Mumble12 · 13/04/2025 21:23

YourTidyScroller · 13/04/2025 21:02

No.
And someone working has costs associated with that.

Someone working could claim pip too. How many times do you need to be told pip isn’t an out of work benefit?

Happilyobtuse · 13/04/2025 21:23

pointythings · 13/04/2025 17:47

OK, let's do a little thought experiment here.

OP, imagine that prices are exactly the same as they are now. You are working a NMW job, but getting £5k in the bank. Your person with mental ill health is getting £6k in benefits.

You are both very comfortable.

Now do you still feel the same way about the situation?

Yes, bcoz that is grossly unfair to the tax payer. No one should get more than basic minimum to exist on benefits. If you want extras you have to work for it.

MY relative will have to pay her staff more. The contracts she has wont pay more. They want the cheapest company possible.

How many times do I need to say I know that. But normally when peoples mental health improves enough so they can work full time, then they are no longer eligible for PIP.

The person with MH illness might get £1k more but they also have an illness. The other person does not.

Unemployed people already just exist. If you are a single person you get hardly anything.
