Person with MH problems should not be better off no working

Just that really. Someone working a minimum wage job full-time should not be worse off than someone not working due to mental health problems and claiming benefits.
I know several people in this situation claiming UC for housing benefit, council tax, ESA, disability top up and PIP. They all have no work record and few qualifications so would probably only get a minimum wage job. But their income would reduce. So they have a financial incentive not to recover.

But PIP form is answered on the basis you can not do certain everyday tasks without help.

PIP is a points based system. Someone who is wheelchair bound, can't feed or cook for themselves will score higher and get an 'Enchanced rate' of PIP. You can get a standard rate of PIP if you can carry out some, but not all duties.
Someone suffering from Paranoid Schizophrenia might not get the Mobility payment on PIP although, if it stopped them from leaving the house due to paranoia then they might still get it. As someone upthread has said, comparing someone with a pysical disability and mental disability is like apples and oranges.

YourTidyScroller · 13/04/2025 20:28

I care for someone with a serious mental illness. They do need their meals cooked for them.

I am honestly surprised at that, How can you possibly say you need help with dressing, getting out of bed, cooking etc and be able to work?

Where have I said that I need help with those things?

When I've had episodes of psychosis I've needed 24/7 care.

The majority of the time I manage a serious disability doing the best I can. I work, have raised a family.

BrilliantLight · 13/04/2025 20:29

They wouldn't get a minimum wage job at all. I'm sick of replying to these types of post honestly, such a load of utter c*

thats the flip side, if people were truly honest about their health etc how many companies would even hire them

YourTidyScroller · 13/04/2025 20:30

@EternalSunshine19 I know. But how would someone so paranoid they can not leave the house manage to work? I was expressing surprise that someone with this level of mental illness be so affected as to get PIP, but still hold down a full time job. The person claiming to do that has ignored all my questions.

Do you always have a go at people whose literacy is not as good as yours?

Not at all. However being 50 years old and still under the guidance of a psychiatrist... educated to degree level and still struggling with MH. I think it's only fair that you manage to appear intelligent before destroying people with your (shoddily worded) words.

No different to me then. But I am managed by medication so work and am not eligible for PIP.

You lie, like I have. Its what most people do to get work if they have serious health problems.

I assume that's okay with you and your views.

Is there anything you'd like to ask about my health?

No. Good. I wouldn't want my issues plastered all over MN. I couldn't give two chuffs about your thoughts.

I appreciate your post.

You can only work if you do not need much time off. I have gone from the psychiatrist to work - hospital appointment. But have not needed much time off.

Trust me, paranoid schizophrenia can definitely affect you to the point you easily qualify for PIP.

Lwrca? That is universal credit.

Be grateful then. Don't deem to attack others that may not be as blessed as you.

Appointments are not the only occasion you need time off. Being ill means you take time off too. And with MH, that can not often be predictable.

Well, different to you in that I have episodes of mania & psychosis that is helped by medication but doesn't prevent it. The medication also has some serious side effects that can be disabling.

If there was a medication that stopped my illness then I wouldn't be eligible for PIP either

ChickenBananas · 13/04/2025 20:40

You are lucky that your employer employs you in spite of mania and psychosis episodes. That is rare
