Person with MH problems should not be better off no working

YourTidyScroller · 13/04/2025 16:54

Just that really. Someone working a minimum wage job full-time should not be worse off than someone not working due to mental health problems and claiming benefits.
I know several people in this situation claiming UC for housing benefit, council tax, ESA, disability top up and PIP. They all have no work record and few qualifications so would probably only get a minimum wage job. But their income would reduce. So they have a financial incentive not to recover.

Is their only option minimum wage jobs, what is preventing them from applying for jobs that pay more than the minimum wage?

Two have no work history at all. The other has only previously done low paid jobs.

I'd maybe agree with you if minimum wage was a living wage, but it's not.

What you are essentially saying is that those unable to work should get just enough money to exist. Do you think people with mental health problems so severe they can't work don't deserve a meaningful life?

YourTidyScroller · 13/04/2025 19:30

@GCITC do you think people doing low paid work deserve not to live a meaningful life?

What evidence do you have to say that having a disability cost you an extra £1000 a month?

frozendaisy · 13/04/2025 19:32

YourTidyScroller · 13/04/2025 19:25

@frozendaisy You do not understand at all. I have worked since I was 16 and could not afford a private operation. You are talking about middle class people.
Trust me working my low paid job is okay, but it does not really widen my horizons. And no, not everyone progresses.
Middle class people like yourself assume low paid work is a very temporary situation until you are well paid and doing challenging and fun work that exposes you to lots of new experiences and allows you to travel when you want. It is so far from most low paid workers situation.

What do you do for work?

Because having a CV that illustrates reliability and being a grafter usually means you are able to move jobs.

But if not, claim depression, go on benefits, as you seem to think that's a better option. (Ask your friends/family what to say to the GP and how to fill out the relevant forms sounds like they can).

what about companies stop taking the piss and actually pay better wages

You are in the wrong world (capitalist) to post this. Capitalism is about taking the most and giving the least.

People doing low paid work and not getting paid enough to live a meaningful life, is nothing to do with people who are unable to work and paid enough to live a meaningful life.
It is comparing apples and oranges.
When I last worked, I was on less than what I get in benefits now. I managed to live alone, pay my bills and have a good social life and hobbies, and save a bit too.
I can't do that now, and I am on more.

It's called the "Disability Price Tag" and has been heavily researched, primarily by Scope. A simple Internet search would allow you to see their evidence. It's actually gone up, so is over £1000 now.

HTH

Bunty1958 · 13/04/2025 19:36

But surely it depends on the nature of your disability and how it affects you?

You don't think people should have social housing?

Yeah I do. But SUV, new kitchen, air con. It grates when you work but can’t afford a car

Working people can apply for social housing.

Why does it?

If you’re low paid, it’s because your employer is paying you a low amount. What that has to do with disabled people/those on benefits I’ll never know - they’re separate issues.

These people aren’t stealing your SUV, are they?

YourTidyScroller · 13/04/2025 19:41

Working people can apply for social housing.

You are extremely unlikely to get it though. There is a massive shortage

Well, yes, obviously a wheelchair user with COPD might need different resources to a person with psychosis. Isn't that obvious? It's the cost of those resources that is on average of £1000.

It's hardly rocket science.

My parents are in social housing, and a new kitchen is dictated to them, and not what they ask for. And they have little say in what it looks like.
A SUV? That is nothing to do with social housing.
Or is that a dig at people on PIP who swap their payments for a car on the Motability scheme?

The two who have no work history at all, what age are they and what are their MH issues that have completely disallowed them from working
Honestly interested as I know no one in those sort of positions, however I do know a lot of people who can hold down full time demanding careers whilst suffering from very bad anxiety, depression and various other ailments

I’d love social housing, I can barely cover the cost of private rental as a single parent. I don’t begrudge the people that have it, I just wish there was more of it so I could have it too

Another thread about this?🥱

I know.

We are all struggling. Some of us worked years to gain qualifications and get good jobs and yet struggle to make ends meet. But do we really have to blame the more vulnerable among us and resent them for what they have? Would we be happier if they were all begging in the streets?

Like I said there is something wrong with the system. And when you see it first hand you end up annoyed. Fact
