To ask about shandals?

I love a shandal, mountain warehouse particularly.

BUT! Is there an actual sandal you find comfy for all day walking in the sun?

Which might look a bit better with a summer dress…

Keens and Teva style footwear are the shandals of choice around here for every age group (apart from teenagers who live in birkenstocks and slides). They're ideal for all sorts of weather and environments - beach, boat, supermarket...

I do wonder at S&B threads.

I'm a teacher and the students complain about uniform a lot and while I don't necessarily agree with school uniform overall, I do point out that it reduces bullying. We had a massive problem a few years ago with people bullying boys who wore shorts and they were shamed into wearing trousers and feeling uncomfortable. The cry was always "I wouldn't be seen dead in shorts" and we tackled it robustly and now shorts are worn by at least half of the boys in summer and nobody says a word about them.

I know people on MN are trying to be hilarious and most posters won't feel miserable hearing the asides, but the snide digs do sometimes give me pause.

"Unpretty"? "Ugly"? When exactly are women going to be allowed to have hobbies and be comfortable doing them without worrying about meeting a beauty standard. Or just wearing shoes they like.

I actually believe the opposite is true - the culture of conformity in schools makes it less safe for women especially to wear whatever the heck they want to. It conditions everyone in a school to focus on clothing and it conditions girls and women especially to expect and accept that their appearance is up for judgement by all and sundry.

I’m not a fan of them, but scandals have a toe section…they just have ‘holes’ along the sides…

It seems it depends whether we’re talking about Shandals https://www.shandals.co.uk or ‘toe covered sandals’ which may perhaps be violating a registered trademark.

Tummelthecat · 11/04/2025 15:54

Honestly anyone would think you were advocating killing and eating kittens!! If shandals rock your boat, go buy another pair and never mind the fashion police!

Early 40s.

Is it a bad time to confess my kids also wear them. … we’re very outdoorsy people.

Goodness though, I didn’t realise they provoked quite such a reaction.

Mumsnet might be relieved to hear my shandals actually snapped, hence making the change. I cannot wear them even if I wanted to.

I don't know why people are being weird about this - they're no uglier than most of the 'fashion' people generally wear. Basically trainers, for the summer, right? I've seen then on kids but not adults. Nothing wrong with them though. Go for it.

I know right.

I can’t help but wonder what the hidden or deleted posts said!

I live in Free Spirit and Skechers sandals in summer and Heavenly feet boots in winter. All incredibly comfortable for my knackered arthritic feet and last for years

I DuckDuckGo’ed and got those but also the link to the Shandals site.

GiggleWiggle246 · 11/04/2025 16:37

Have a look at the GoldenGlow Uggs. They’re really comfy and give lots of support and are quite stylish IMO.

Mother of god. Never unseeing these.

Shandals for gnomes.

DeedsNotDiddums · 11/04/2025 18:29

Thank you for this!! I like them but didn't know there was a word for them, so could never properly search for them!!

Reallyyyyyy · 11/04/2025 18:34

Why was my link hidden? They where leather sandals 🤣

Gretnaglebe · 11/04/2025 18:58

Lordy me, I wear Skechers with impunity, but these abominations are a step too far

Janie143 · 11/04/2025 19:31

As PP have suggested Tresspass Kimbra are the most comfy sandles I've ever bought. I have walked for hours in them with no issues at all. Got a pair in each colour. Tempted to buy 2 more pairs for when my current ones wear out.

I think I’ve found a gateway sandal to help me move from shandals. 😁

I wouldn't allow my 84 year old mum wear these .

BobbyBiscuits · 11/04/2025 20:03

I actually don't understand. I did look it up, but it seems to be just a trainer with holes in the sides?! To me it looks preposterous!
Apparently scholls are back in fashion, they're doing a Collab with Balenciaga?! Lol.
So maybe go down that route. But even just a Birkenstock is comfy enough to walk a fair bit in. Anything but the bloody shandal!

EcruCardigan · 11/04/2025 20:11

I like the boots.

justasking111 · 11/04/2025 21:53

Shandals I had to Google. I've seen them down at the marina only on men though. They're too fugly for a dress

Titasaducksarse · 11/04/2025 21:55

Merrell leather sandals

OneAlertNavyAnt · 11/04/2025 22:29

I’ve spent forever searching for sandals with a shaped footbed with arch support, soft comfy straps that don’t rub or dig in or annoy me anywhere, and a bit that covers the weird gap between my big toe and the next toe, and that aren’t too ugly. I’ve never found anything that meets all those requirements so last summer I got these instead and they were great. https://www.salomon.com/en-gb/shop-emea/product/amphib-bold-2-w.html#color=76255

The mesh lets lots of air in so they’re great in the heat but there are no big gaps or straps that rub. And I think they’re less ugly than most walking sandals. No good with a dress but fine with shorts or trousers.

To all the scathing and disgusted posters, I’d love to wear pretty sandals instead, but I can’t because they all hurt if they don’t have good arch support.

Thursday5pmisginoclock · 11/04/2025 23:02

Saltwater. They look great and are most comfortable I’ve ever worn. I have wide feet. When you first get them stand in a bowl of water so they fit.
I frequently get my watch saying I’ve walked over 10k on a day out wearing these and my feet are fine (also in early 40s). Gold pair look dressy enough for a date/pub; and they can get soaking wet on a beach too.

Goatinthegarden · 12/04/2025 08:42

I’m all for practical, sporty footwear, but I’ve never understood the trainer/sandal hybrid (ignoring how I feel about the aesthetics of them). They look like they would have bits that would trap dirt and stones, they look a bit blistery, and they look like they’d get a bit smelly without socks.

If I’m doing a lot of walking around a city or on paths in a dress, a Birkenstock does me just fine. A lot of other high street sandals are just a bit too flimsy for walking any real distance. I suppose hiking sandals would be perfectly practical, but I personally don’t really like the look.

If I’m doing something a bit more strenuous/adventurous, I’d want my feet properly covered/protected. I wear running trainers with shorts for far too much of the summer.

I used to really care about what others thought of me, but now I just wear what I like and what is comfortable and practical. That’s what you should do OP.

CornishDew · 12/04/2025 09:49

I had them to hike in but they just made me feet smell, my DD had the same issue

I find the Keen Elle sandals a good middle ground for all day walking whilst going with most of my shorts and dresses.
