To ask about shandals?

I love a shandal, mountain warehouse particularly.

BUT! Is there an actual sandal you find comfy for all day walking in the sun?

Which might look a bit better with a summer dress…

I had no idea these had a name, I've always called them summer hiking shoes!

Anyway, they're for hiking in summer, not a fashion statement. I wear them with shorts and a vest, on hikes. With a summer dress I'd wear light trainers if I was planning to do a lot of walking about, or beaded sandals if I was just ambling around. Maybe ballet flats if no beaches involved.

I’ve had several pairs of Tevas that I can walk all day (20km or 20000 steps) comfortably. Generally the ones with walking shoe type soles or thicker soles are best. Saltwaters with the thicker sole (Broadwalk style) are also good and not as ugly as Tevas.

I think it's the opposite. Forcing all the students to look exactly the same contributes to a culture where being different brings disapproval. Small changes within the accepted uniform- e.g. rolling up skirts, shortening ties, untucked shirts, become the only acceptable way to wear it and anyone who wears it differently gets bullied. Any teacher who thinks kids in uniform don't get bullied, including for what they are wearing, is extremely naive.

Countries where there is no school uniforms- i.e. most of the rest of Europe- don't have higher rates of bullying.

As I said, overall I don't agree with uniform for the reasons you describe.

My point was that I talk to teens about bullying/comments around clothing, it surprises me to hear adults being so rude about other people's clothing.

scalt · 12/04/2025 14:36

I think the look of "sliders and socks" that seems to be favoured by teenagers is ugly, but hey ho.

I've worn the ugly "shandals" before, and small stones are indeed a problem: easy for them to get in, not so easy out.

I like the Nike Mayfly for summer walking: holes are much smaller, so fewer stones.

Had to google.
Tbh, I would not be seen dead in these. They look like a cartoon tramp's shoes; found in a skip, but the toe section has to be cut off because they are too small.
Quite a few threads about sandal in style and beauty at the moment, with some lovely examples

I wouldn’t be seen dead in a shandal either unless I had severe foot issues and had absolutely no other options

Honestly, why would someone want to wear something like these?

Toddlerteaplease · 12/04/2025 17:32

It’s what people who wear Tilley hats and go to national trust places wear.

TheHierophant · 12/04/2025 17:48

Had to google them. A truly terrifying spectacle. You coukd not pay me to wear anything so ghastly.

They wouldn’t say it in person, I wouldn’t have thought. I think some
people use the internet to let out their vitriol.

I would expect it more from teens but I imagine a lot of these responses are from adult women, which makes it all the more disappointing.

I don’t mind but I do feel bad for people on the thread who might be put off their footwear by the responses. It wasn’t a request for negativity but asking for sandal options, funny how it landed!

I can see you all now eating your boiled egg sandwiches on a bench

😂😂😂

Catsbreakfast · 12/04/2025 18:43

blowfish do a nice range of sandals that are really comfy. I take them travelling and walk in them all day in hot weather without blisters or rubbing.

What are we meant to be voting for? I don’t understand how this is a AIBU question.

Fair point! Should have gone in a different section with hindsight.

Merrel do walking sandals (Kahuna III). I wear mine hiking and have just come back from 4 months in India. Very durable and look ok

Babs0205 · 12/04/2025 20:07

Fantasy Sandals.
It's a a greek sandal company (fantasy-sandals.gr) and they are incredibly comfortable but stylish too.
It's a bubble sole bottom, and like walking on air!
I buy them in Corfu, but you can buy them online or occasionally you might find them on sale in the UK.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 12/04/2025 20:10

Teva, sketchers foam based sandals or crocs sandals.

Honeybeatea · 12/04/2025 20:12

I work for a large shoe company and have never heard the word Shandal lol is it a new thing? Mind you Iv been off sick the past 5 weeks

Honeybeatea · 12/04/2025 20:14

Just saw a picture. I have saw them before but had no idea what these where called lol
mind you we are more fashion retail, these are outdoorsy

Clafoutie · 12/04/2025 20:43

The things that really give me the heebie jeebies are those ‘barefoot toe shoes’. I hadn’t seen them before, then saw a man in them on the bus the other day and had that thing where you can’t stop looking at something but want to. Grotesque!

Currently dying of laughter - your description made me curious so I looked them up and this is exactly what they look like 🤣

Fuck they are so ugly. I think I like them

beautifuldaytosavelives · 12/04/2025 23:26

They are literally the ugliest things I’ve ever seen. Sorry. Also with pp’s who say having children doesn’t mean you have to dress just so you’re not naked. Birkenstocks. Miles and miles of stylish comfort.

namethisbird · 12/04/2025 23:27

orangegato · 11/04/2025 15:12

Thanks for making me literally choke on my tea.

😂😂😂

They’re awful, who wears these? Women who have given up? Women who have no sense of style? Women who want to look frumpy?

OP you’re 40 you’re not dead yet find something a bit more fashionable.

Oh and I’m from northern England 🙂

Personally I find Birkenstocks pretty ugly. There's a degree of subjectivity in what looks nice

I don't like the look of the sandals but if people are doing long walks then they are far better of prioritising comfort and practicality and not giving any thought to style.

I used to do an active sport and never gave a moments thought to what I looked like on the water. It was whatever would mean we stayed warm and could win the race . Style and beauty was for the after parties!

There's a time and a place for fashion and there's a reason there are always stories of Mountain rescue teams getting frustrated with what people wear to go hill walking.
