Feel annoyed we can’t go on another holiday this year

We usually do 2 abroad holidays a year one week each and 3 uk short breaks aswell.
This year we have come away abroad for 11 nights with the idea that if we came longer that would be our abroad holiday this year.
We have our 3 uk breaks booked this year too.
Well it’s nearing the end of our abroad holiday and I’m the type of person who’s always got to have something booked to look forward to (holidays are our thing we don’t spend money on anything else) so I’m now starting to get that holiday blues sad feeling of we are heading home in a few days and where usually we would be back in August we won’t be back until April again next year.

AIBU for thinking that waiting a year after an abroad family holiday is hard? Or do I need a reality check and look forward to our abroad holiday this time next year and we will do 11-14 nights again.

Financially we can afford to go in August this year but hubby works for his parents business and when I broached the subject to his mum that we may do a sneaky week in August she promptly informed me that he didn’t have any holiday days left (in fact he is already over his allowance of holidays with the breaks we’ve got booked in the uk this year)
I said well he can take a weeks unpaid and she said it’s not about the time off we’ve got a business to run and work to do.
So that annoyed me 😂

AIBU?

MAybe you could go to a pharmacy conference in August, somewhere hot? That could be nice and then you could leave your family at home.

Why not? I do, so does my DH. Plenty of businesses offer that option.

Because the post says they need staff in August, so he can’t just take a week unpaid as it’s obviously a busy period for the business, or perhaps they have other staff off. Feels like they are taking advantage by using all his AL but then asking for unpaid. Next year, they will need to plan better and prioritise 2 overseas holidays if that’s their preference instead of multiple UK breaks.

You sound really entitled but in saying all that. I don't live the same life.

I think the majority of people who can't afford to go on holiday isn't because they splash on acrylic nails or other treats as you say. Wages haven't gone up as fast as everything else, the COL and global events have put a massive hole in people's pocket, and those who were already counting every penny are living hand to mouth. They'd love a holiday every year, like everyone else, and it's not because they don't have the same priorities 🙄 Even if you stopped having your nails done every month at £30, that wouldn't pay you a family holiday a year.

I am not saying it's universal but it is for some. I have worked with people in the past who have commented on the amount of holidays I have but always buy their lunch from Pret and buy something new from the local high street once a week at least, which was within walking distance from the office. It's a choice in these situations. Neither are wrong. It's whatever makes you happy

On the flip side of that I have also been on the bones of my arse. Particularly when my DD was a baby. If a collection came round work I would panic as it would mean going without something vital that week or looking tight by not contributing. The food shop at the end of the month had to go on credit cards as there were no food banks then that I knew of. My shoes had holes in the bottom. Despite being that skint myself, I still believe the op has a right to feel sad about the loss of something that gives her a lot of happiness.

SALaw · 11/04/2025 08:39

He surely knows how many holidays he is entitled to and worked out the issue when booking the days off within the first 3 and a bit months of the year?!

Apparently not.

Mine and the kids holiday this year is in a mobile home for 2 nights with my mum, stepdad and stepsister in the uk not far from us. And I feel very lucky to have that. Our last holiday was a weekend camping 2 years ago. It's what you make of it, many people are just happy spending time with family. Even then I feel lucky for the relationships I have with mine as many people don't even have that.

A quote that stays with me is "you don't have to go miles to find memorable".

‘It’ll do’ wow

It’ll do until our second home purchase in Dubai is completed.

Or maybe we’re fine with a seaside trip to Skeggy.

Sometimes you just play along for the fun of it. 😉

Skeggy? Thou were lucky. My last holiday were in a pothole on the M1

Paganpentacle · 11/04/2025 16:01

I always think that people that live for holidays must be a bit boring.
What do you do the rest of the year?
Hobbies etc?

Only your second home? I prefer to have at least six on the go 😂

Ariadneslostthread · 11/04/2025 17:52

No offence meant, but I think you need a reality check. Disabled, on universal credit, no heating, no holiday, no new clothes. That’s hard when I grafted so hard my whole life, and the state took, took, took, and then treats you as though you are worthless. I’d give anything for a weekend in a caravan at Skegness, but that’s not happening. Consider yourself privileged, and very lucky….and buy yourself a new lounger for the garden. It’s beautiful out here today

This is a spoof, right?

YANBU!! I love having holidays booked. We’ve been to Portugal so far this year, we’re off to Wales next month, Florida in August and just booked New York for Jan 2026. Like you, we don’t really spend money on anything else. We’d rather have experiences than piles of crap filling up our house.

Bunnybear42 · 11/04/2025 18:46

this is a joke, right ?

schtompy · 11/04/2025 18:57

Aww ..I've not been on holiday abroad for 10 years, Cornwall to stay and help my mum every year but that's stopped now she's passed. Wonderful if you can have 1 holiday a year, never mind 2!

pestowithwalnuts · 11/04/2025 19:01

Dearie me poor you...can't have two holidays this year.
My DH died on Tuesday and I'm highly unlikely to get or want even one holiday for quite a few years

I am sorry for your loss. What a dreadful time for you. I wish you well

WhineAndWine1 · 11/04/2025 19:14

Op I get it. We are going to NY in a week for 5 days and my DH doesn’t want to book a summer holiday so I’m off on a solo trip and he can hold down the fort here

Some people can’t afford either!

Fizbosshoes · 11/04/2025 19:33

People obviously have different incomes and different priorities how they spend their money. I get my hair done once or twice a year, and never get my nails done...neither do I go on several foreign holidays. We have just had a few days away in the UK though.

Of course it's not unreasonable to have a higher income or spend a larger proportion on holidays because that's what's important....but the sense that they need or deserve it (more) because they worked hard is a bit grating.
People who don't go abroad aren't necessarily not going because they didn't work hard or deserve a break. Carers, or people on NMW or lower paid jobs, will also be working hard (carers are often working 24/7) and will possibly have no holiday or a more budget uk based holiday.

Hangingonthere · 11/04/2025 20:15

Sorry OP, when you run your own business or are part of a family business working, sometimes above and beyond, goes with the territory. We ran our own business and had family members work for us in important roles and them sloping off on even an unpaid holiday wasn't even considered - by them or us.
