Is this unflattering for a bridesmaid?

Froum · 09/04/2025 22:02

My bridesmaids range in size from 8 to 12. No one happens to be plus size.

Would this dress flatter most of the women do you reckon?

We are late 20s

i have chosen to show the image of the plus size model as I think it highlights that it works on bigger sizes. What do you think?

You really need to be very willowy with a bias cut dress like that - especially in that fabric. Your dress underwear would need to be very carefully thought out. The colour is nice though.

Flavourful · 11/04/2025 07:46

It would crease up and look terrible in photos but I also think you should be asking the opinion of the people who will be wearing them.

LadyPenelope68 · 11/04/2025 07:52

Horrific style and material, won’t flatter anyone at all. The only good thing going for it is the colour.

Blinkyy · 11/04/2025 08:31

11 pages of comments but wanted to say colour might not be so good on a pale skinned person - model is tanned

PinkiOcelot · 09/04/2025 22:05

It looks like a nightie.

I agree, I'm afraid. ⬆️

She's going to ensure that the bridesmaids use self tan.

Utterlyridiculous · 11/04/2025 08:49

I think the trouble is that the things you find ‘matronly’ have more structure and are more wearable for more body types. The structure also makes them more practical and wearable for a long day.

I find strict colour scheme weddings really old fashioned and don’t work outside of the cover of Hello, so what you’re imagining might not happen in real life anyway.

You have you be less rigid in style and colour scheme.

Also re tanning, skin colour from Indian heritage (with cool pink undertones) would look beautiful with the mauve colour but fake tan is almost always yellow/orange based which won’t look or feel nice at all.

Coconutter24 · 10/04/2025 21:58

You absolutely can’t ask bridesmaids to fake tan!!

I'd definitely tell the bride to shove it if I was expected to use fake tan!

I think OP addressed this earlier. Her BMs are happy to do so. Her wording was clumsy. She said "all the bridesmaids have faked tanned at one point or another."

I was once asked to grow my hair and also to get a padded bra. I didn't do either.

Superhansrantowindsor · 11/04/2025 10:50

Fake tan nearly always looks fake. Better to get a colour that suits their natural skin tone.

MusicMakesItAllBetter · 11/04/2025 10:58

Froum · 09/04/2025 22:04

But all my bridesmaids are slim

Personally I love this dress and see no issues with it for your bridesmaids.

MusicMakesItAllBetter · 11/04/2025 11:06

I don't get why people are not ok with the bridesmaids fake tanning.
The OP knows them well.
If they fake tan anyway, then what's the issue?

Exactly! It’s incredibly rude to ask someone to change their appearance to suit a wedding

petmad · 11/04/2025 13:22

Its horrible

Isthiswhatmenthink · 11/04/2025 14:19

Froum · 09/04/2025 22:21

So this is the only other dress I have found that I like. But will it look weird cause the groom and groomsmen have gone for navy suits

You only like those two dresses?? Are you trying to make your bridesmaids look bloody awful? 🤣

Isthiswhatmenthink · 11/04/2025 14:21

Froum · 09/04/2025 22:36

I love this colour. 2 bridesmaids (cousins) are half Indian and it would look amazing on them. I would ask the other bridesmaids to fake tan

Jesus Christ 🤯

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 11/04/2025 14:43

OMG @Froum I know that brides don't want their bridesmaids to look better than them, but this is taking the piss! That is a fugly nasty dress! 😬 I would refuse to be a bridesmaid if I was expected to wear THAT monstrosity!

And on the first pic you put on (with the so called 'plus size' woman who is about a size 14-16,) it looks horrific.

Just NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Shock

WTAF?! Shock Seriously, you'd get a short shrift from me if you told me to change my skin colour to match someone elses. You can't be serious! 😱

Froum · 11/04/2025 14:50

Some people are very easily triggered by a dress, aren’t they?

OP posts:
Silverstars21 · 11/04/2025 14:57

To be fair OP you asked mumsnet a question and posters have given their honest opinions. I don't think there is any ill will in your replies. If I wasn't sure about an outfit & asked for opinions & the result was the same as the opinions here I would be disappointed if I genuinely liked it. I would also accept the views of the people I asked & probably reconsider my choice. I wouldn't assume over 90% of people were being nasty, just honest.

Agreed. I love the colour, not a fan of the style of the dress in the OP. @Froum I really dislike the use of the word “trigger” because you are devaluing the actual meaning of the word and in doing so you are, unintentional or not, belittling those who do feel triggered by things that have an adverse effect on their mental heath and wellbeing.

What it looks like on a slimmer person

The asymmetrical seams on the dress look like it’s faulty as well.

ExitPersuedByAPomBear · 11/04/2025 15:15

I think it’s rude to call something “flouncy”. Besides, opinions are subjective. For instance, I don’t think someone in their late 20s is a young woman. It might seem like that to someone in their late 40s etc. but a 10 year old would think that you’re old.

Have you shown the bridesmaids the dress yet, @Froum ?
