Is this unflattering for a bridesmaid?

Froum · 09/04/2025 22:02

My bridesmaids range in size from 8 to 12. No one happens to be plus size.

Would this dress flatter most of the women do you reckon?

We are late 20s

i have chosen to show the image of the plus size model as I think it highlights that it works on bigger sizes. What do you think?

I love this colour. 2 bridesmaids (cousins) are half Indian and it would look amazing on them. I would ask the other bridesmaids to fake tan

You absolutely can’t ask bridesmaids to fake tan!!

CuddlyDodoToy · 10/04/2025 21:59

It is ugly and unflattering on the model, so unlikely to look nice on anyone else. The cheap shiny material will emphasise lumps and bumps on even the slimmest bridesmaids.

I'd keep looking if I were you.

I had to disengage because people wear seemingly taking glee in being rude. I picked a dress people don’t like. It’s not that serious.

I haven’t shown the dresses yet. I’m putting together a Pinterest board. The first dress I shared was my fav. I hate flouncy dresses like the one I’ve attached. We’re young women! Something sleeker is my preferred look. I don’t want them to look matronly.

My wedding is very understated.

That is the prettiest and most flattering dress you’ve posted, I know you don’t like it but it’s definitely the nicest

So this is the only other dress I have found that I like. But will it look weird cause the groom and groomsmen have gone for navy suits

Navy bridesmaid dresses are so elegant. If you're having a posh wedding, then this is your answer. One of the most beautiful wedding photos I saw was a bride in white with a group of navy bridesmaids. At least have a Google because it would be way easier to find dresses in navy than the dusky putty colour.

Fridgetapas · 10/04/2025 22:08

Agree with you OP that look is dated now.

Eyerollexpert · 10/04/2025 22:18

PinkiOcelot · 09/04/2025 22:05

It looks like a nightie.

I agree or from Shein or both.

Sorry, you PAID to try on dresses?????

We did. Rather than go to a shop and try them on for free we paid to do it at home. You then get money off it you buy. Worked amazingly well for us and definitely didn't consider it a rip off. 😁

Why not just go to the shop - was it too far to travel?

tedibear · 10/04/2025 22:58

Totally shapeless and I think wld highlight any lumps or bumps. The bust bit is really weird looking too. I don’t think your bridesmaids will thanks you!

Unwelcoming · 11/04/2025 00:06

I'm sorry as a slim body and big chest that is a no no and you can still get cellulite all the bumps still being slim. Have you tried the dress!? You might have the perfect body but it's not fair on everyone else to make them wear something unflattering uncomfortable that shows their flaws... That seam needs to go. maybe chiffon... To be honest i love satin as a bridesmaid dress but not the nightie type and not where your body parts have to sit in a particular area regardless of size. Sorry I know its not what you wanted to hear but they are right I wouldn't be able to get into something like that let alone pull it off. Ill attached a few pics once being something similar but no seams under the bust of needs must atkeasr they can use shapewear if need be

I think its the combination of the bias cut, the satin and colour - and then for whatever reason the arms cut in a way you can't wear a bra. Even sticking to that kind of satin bridesmaid look but just eliminating one of those factors brings up much nicer options
photo 1 - there's a reason multiways are popular for bridesmaids - easily get the colour you want, bridesmaids can style as works for them
photo 2 - satin and bias cut but navy
photo 3 - satin, putty coloured but more flattering cut - and even though strapless you could still wear a bra

Personally I would forget about a “colour scheme” altogether. The whole concept is old fashioned looking these days. You could choose some dresses with better structure if you didn’t need to stick to this colour.

Bowies · 11/04/2025 02:06

I don’t like the bust detail on the dress itself, it makes it look like nightwear or at least very informal for what is a formal occasion.

Agree it looks just as good on both body shapes but would pick something else personally.

Bowies · 11/04/2025 02:27

Not saying you necessarily want to buy from here, but Nobody’s child have some different examples of slim fitting cut on the bias satin slip dresses, but without the bust detail:

Alternative but similar style bridesmaid dresses (there’s a picture with a bride and 2 different bridesmaids dresses, I couldn’t link that picture, this is linking to one of them)

I think these are lovely , much more flattering. And would look great with navy suits.

WutheringBites · 11/04/2025 04:30

Not my cup of tea; bias cut is always tricky.

also it’s interesting, that colour reminds me of what I tend to call, erm, vulval pink.

ask your bridesmaids what they like. It kinda doesn’t matter what a bunch of randoms on the internet think, does it? & have a fab time together!

This one is GORGEOUS

Op says she doesn’t like it.

What about the Azazie dress that I posted a link to and subsequently been suggested another 2/3 times by other posters @Froum ?

MrBirling · 11/04/2025 06:29

I really like the second dress you posted OP, much nicer and more flattering.

I'm a size 12 and look slim but I dress for my shape and have excellent underwear which makes a big difference. For me that original dress would have me worried about sweat patches under my boobs which is never a good look.

Have you tried Etsy. Not somewhere I would have thought of but there seems to be lots of dresses on there in the dusty pink / mauve colour you like. To be flattering to all your bridesmaids I would make sure you pick something that at least allows them to wear a decent bra.

BlueFlowers5 · 11/04/2025 06:44

Very unflattering, fabric unsuitable, it looks like a full slip not a dress.
Are you getting married in a church? It's not conservative enough for a church wedding.

You really can't ask someone to change their skin colour!

winetimenow · 11/04/2025 07:10

You are likely to get helpful advice in Style and Beauty

I don't love the dress but I think only your bridesmaids really can tell after they have tried it on whether it will fit or not.
But it also looks like you are looking at traditional bridesmaids dress shops - there might be good options looking in other shops especially as you're all young

FreddieMercurysCat · 11/04/2025 07:35

It looks like one of my nighties tbh.

FleurDeFleur · 11/04/2025 07:43

Morning OP.
Firstly - ask to get this moved to Style and Beauty. People on there are really great and helpful.
Secondly - please take on board the suggestion to stop looking at these online stores and take your bridesmaids to a reputable shop for some serious trying on, eg John Lewis.
Thirdly - don't think you have to buy dresses specifically for "bridesmaids"? That's limiting your choices.
