To ask how often you’re complimented on your looks

In particular by people you've just met. Have been out with a very pretty friend who has had men fawning over her/complimenting her whilst I was just ignored as usual. I don't think my physical appearance has ever been complimented by a stranger. Feeling a bit crap. Does this happen to other people?

My mother gets random compliments - I love your coat, your hair is beautiful, you look like X actor - and she is 83.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 11/04/2025 22:56

I do get mentions about my dress sense and hair.

How does it work then, when a stranger comes up to you to tell you you're beautiful or attractive?

Do they shuffle along and sidle up, saying "I just had to tell you how beautiful you are."
That doesn't have the ring of truth to me AT ALL.

I am very good looking and always well groomed-that's just a fact- and never have I had a stranger come up to me with the sole aim of commenting on my looks-never.

My friends and husband have known me for years, so I don't startle them with my beauty every time I appear-they don't fall down in raptures-in much the same way that if you live in Venice, you just go about your business, not stopping to rhapsodise!

I simply don't believe strangers tell posters they are lovely-unless they're very young and that person is trying to pick them up-and I don't believe that friends and family go around in awe of the good looks of someone that they know.

So, if you don't have people remarking on your looks regularly, read this thread and think that must be because you are plain-it's not. It doesn't happen to anyone and I say this confidently.

Just because it hasn’t happened to you it doesn’t happen?

Not only does it happen to me but I know it happens to others because I do it!

If someone has amazing hair or skin or fashion why not say something?

I have a friend who was a much more successful model than me and I’ve seen the way people stop and stare and then apologize for staring because she’s gorgeous. I still am stunned at how gorgeous she is!

I remember meeting Angelina Jolie years ago and thinking I would pay to watch her watch paint dry. She’s out of this world gorgeous.

I agree it does happen. Hasn’t happened to me for a while but the last time I can think of a compliment from a random adult was in my early 30s. I was working in a large bookshop and a customer (quite a well spoken middle aged woman) came over and said something like gorgeous style, and gorgeous face and my lovely coworker chimed in and said she agreed which was nice of her. Sometime it’s not been a total stranger but perhaps someone I’ve just met at a social event or a friends family member.

More recently I had a kid in a school I ran a workshop up at tell me I was beautiful which was cute lol

I grew up in scotland and had quite a few people stop and tell me I was beautiful or looked like a model (even though im
short and curvy!) when I was in my 20s.

For balance also had some random woman call me ugly in an M&S when I was wearing a mask and glasses during the pandemic. She couldn’t even see half my face 😂 I must say she was really unattractive herself despite her thick makeup so I suspect she just wanted to put someone down.

But yeah the point is people will make comments and one person might see you as pretty another one will see you as average or even ugly! And sometimes people might say you are pretty/ugly just to cheer you up or put you down so take it with a pinch of salt and just love yourself!

And I see it happening to others still , sometimes it’s friends I’m with but other times just others around me. Like on the plane a few weeks ago the cabin crew member told the girl next to me in the aisle seat that her skin and nails were amazing . A few months before that on the tube a group of young girls told another young girl she was absolutely stunning.

ETA: actually just remembered the last time it happened was last year on a trip to the US. I was on a bar crawl and a woman from a group of people that me and my friends got chatting to told me I was absolutely beautiful and she loved my accent.

And just to add I know some stunning people that get compliments like all the time as well as stunning people who never get any compliments. I feel some people look more approachable than others!

I've noticed is that wearing glasses makes me invisible to men. When I wear contact lenses I get more looks and attention out in public.

Yes this!

I’ve had people - mainly guys - who seen me without my glasses for the first time act as if I’ve had a complete makeover like - wow I didn’t know you looked like that, you look so different without glasses etc and I’m like… erm okay? 🤨

Also had one now ex laugh at me when he first seen me wearing glasses 🙄

I don’t think I look that bad/ different with glasses!!

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/04/2025 00:08

Frequently when I was younger. I hated it, tbh.

Really only by my husband/close family now I’m 60 😁

KimberleyClark · 12/04/2025 00:14

Been told I have a lovely smile occasionally.

ShineBrighterxx · 12/04/2025 00:18

5 years ago… loads ! I never drank coffee
or red wine and had natural Colgate teeth, since I met my partner they’ve changed !!

I love this thread, Let’s also ask when did you last compliment a stranger ? Might start that one up.

SquashedMallow · 12/04/2025 00:21

I used to get a good amount of compliments in my early 20s, a fair amount late 20s. Tailed off slightly in my 30s. Now late 30s and I'll get the odd here and there, but definitely tailed off with age! I'm what is considered "pretty" but not "beautiful" - I'e haven't got great bone structure or face shape and "strong" features. If I put make up on I look pretty. But without it , I wouldn't be looked twice at.

VirgosNeedGoals · 12/04/2025 00:26

Quite often if I'm honest, more on my clothes than my looks though. Ironically the one person who never does is the one I secretly really fancy. Story of my fecking life man!

Billerto · 12/04/2025 00:31

PoppyBaxter · 09/04/2025 23:13

I'm trying to think of situations where this could even happen.

In my particular workplace it would be highly inappropriate and unprofessional to comment on anyone's looks or be flirtatious.

I am aware of men giving me a glance on the train or at the gym, but I'm married and they wouldn't approach me and say anything.

Beyond that, the men in my life are really just my husband's friends, who would never feel it appropriate to comment on my looks.

I don't do nights out in bars or anything these days, so I'm not meeting random drunk men who have the bravado to say anything.

It can happen anywhere not just bars or clubs.

I’ve heard either myself or others get complimented in various places such as : shops, restaurants, high streets, churches, planes, trains, and buses, house parties, bbqs and gyms .

And it’s mainly women I’m talking about , I don’t think random men giving compliments while they’re hitting on you counts lol

Jumpingthruhoops · 12/04/2025 00:32

Almost daily on clothes, shoes, accessories etc, which is nice as I do try to make an effort.
And have always had 'comments' on my looks and the fact I'm tall and slim - mainly compliments but some negativity too. Am late 40s.

IsItOnlyWednesday · 12/04/2025 08:28

Last night I was at a gig, wearing loop earplugs although the music hadn’t actually started, and reading glasses to read what drinks they have at the bar (I’m 52 for context). The barman (who was really young), said something to me and I took an earplug out and went ‘WHAT?’ really loudly. Poor lad looked mortified and said ‘you’ve got lovely eyes’. I didn’t know what to say so I just scuttled off. Both of us were too embarrassed to look at eachother after that.

It happens, it's baffling you don't believe it.
At checkouts in supermarkets (usually from women)
From DCs friends (which slightly annoys them) ie so and so was commenting how pretty you are Mum.
In passing, quite a lot.
You sound quite bitter.

IsItOnlyWednesday · 12/04/2025 08:46

I told someone yesterday that she looked amazing, told her that her outfit looks great and she is beautiful. I meant it but she was so surprised, I’m guessing she was in her late 50s / 60s and was with two people who were younger and probably what society values more in terms of height / age / looks but she really stood out to me.

I wonder if people pick up on your vibes as much as your appearance. The poster you quote has an air of arrogance about them and that’s not attractive really, so perhaps that why is never happens to them?

localnotail · 12/04/2025 08:57

Never by men, I'm now in my 50s and was always quite unattractive to them. Weirdly, was often told by females I'm stylish and interesting )) shame I'm straight!

nutbrownhare15 · 12/04/2025 09:24

Occasionally by men in my youth. Tbh though it was often inappropriate e.g. guy in 20s hitting on me as a 14 year old on a train. A lot of drunk men on nights out. Often felt insincere or that they wanted to pull anyone. Ultimately I think most men that would do that aren't the type your want to date anyway.

Absolutely, I think if you have a positive, smiley way about you people respond in kind most of the time.

Gretnaglebe · 12/04/2025 15:39

Often told I’ve got good legs. In fact they are chicken legs, but look thin in trousers.

FamilyFool · 12/04/2025 23:20

Tbh I don’t really think about it but people say random things like you have beautiful hands, you have good shoulders, you have lovely teeth, nice legs etc but have never considered myself beautiful. I have always been friends with conventionally beautiful women and I’m usually the runt of the litter in those groups 😝Pissed older men have said things like you’ve got a lovely face but your friend is beautiful, or your friend is pretty but you’ve got “the big boobs!” (I haven’t).
Never felt pretty really as mum kept me grounded with comments like “you’re not that special” so it’s been a right mix.
Am surprised to still get come ons from older men and even a 73 year old but I think it says more about them being still frisky or pervy than it does about me. I never asked for any and definitely don’t like wearing low tops or short skirts as I feel too “on show”. I am 55. 😉

mewkins · 13/04/2025 00:27

My best compliment was when I was in my 20s and had gatecrashed my friend's work Christmas party in a club. She worked for a fashion brand. I was introduced to one of her much older colleagues/friends who said I had a look of the 1960s about me. I was actually delighted by that 😄.

deste · 13/04/2025 19:54

I was once asked if i was my friends mother. Nice.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 13/04/2025 20:01

I think friends and colleagues are attractive but tbh who actually tells people? I don't

Edited

I definitely tell my friends they look good,
not colleagues though.
