What would you HONESTLY do in this situation?

Say you ordered a few items from a big online shop (clothing), then successfully cancelled the order, and was refunded.

A few days later, you ordered a single item of clothing from the same place. Today that item was delivered, however they had also sent the items you had cancelled and was refunded for (probably around £120 worth of stuff).

Would you contact them about it or would you keep quiet, see if they emailed you about it and if you didn’t hear anything say 3-4 weeks down the line, just keep the items as normal? This is a place you regularly order from, spending between £300-400 a month.

What would you HONESTLY do?

Why would you donate to charity when it’s clothing you wanted and they said to keep them? That’s a bit bizarre

I assumed you cancelled because you didn't want them. If you wanted it, then keep it, if they say you can.

I’d send it back, you can’t keep it and you know that.

So far....
I hope your conscience pricks you now and then.

Stealing whether it's for remotely ordered goods or in a shop simply puts the prices up for honest shoppers.

My conscience never pricks me over things like this.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 09/04/2025 18:39

It would depend how difficult it was to contact them. I would try to phone or email but I certainly wouldn't hang on for 40 minutes listening to insincere 'we're sorry to keep you waiting' messages, or fight my way through several 'press 1 for...' options when none of them applied.

That really doesn't surprise me, actually.

CanINapNow · 09/04/2025 18:45

Happened to me recently with a big company. I didn’t even think twice about it, I kept them! I’m surprised that everyone’s saying to send them back tbh! If it’s not a small business then it’ll be nothing to them and it was their mistake at the end of the day

Barleysugar86 · 09/04/2025 18:47

Morally I would let them know but not inconvenience myself in the return. I was in a similar situation on a small scale- John Lewis sent me an unexpected toy with my order (toy was worth about £10) in the middle of the first Covid lockdowns. I offered them to come and collect it but they insisted I'd have to post it back to them which I wasn't willing to do. I left it a few months and they hadn't come to get it or followed up so just let the kids have it. But by then my conscience was fairly clear.

TankFlyBossW4lk · 09/04/2025 18:49

Honestly, I'd send them back. I'd feel awful if I 'd essentially nicked them. Also, I would be paranoid about getting caught somehow.

Thisisittheapocalypse · 09/04/2025 18:49

I would contact the company and let them know they'd mistakenly sent me the items I'd cancelled and go from there.

It's called integrity.

CanINapNow · 09/04/2025 18:50

And how is it theft when they sent them to you? You didn’t rob them from a shop. They made a mistake and you’re not letting them know, that is not theft. Some might consider it morally wrong but it’s not theft FFS 😂

northernballer · 09/04/2025 18:51

This happened to me in December and they just added them to my account in March when they realised.

I hadn't got round to sorting it out because I had a death in the family then it was Xmas before anyone starts!

FlatErica · 09/04/2025 18:54

Something like this has happened to me and I told them. It wouldn’t occur to me not to.

AlteredStater · 09/04/2025 18:54

I'd contact them and send the clothes back!

TheLette · 09/04/2025 18:57

I would be honest and I've had similar situations where I've contacted the retailer when I've received a refund / stuff I shouldn't have received. If they don't engage after I point out their mistake and offer to pay / return items, then I don't pursue it as it's on them, they are aware and they could get the situation sorted if they wanted to. But I would always make them aware.

SleepQuest33 · 09/04/2025 18:59

You are spending £300-£400 a month on clothes?
after contacting them and return the items, I would book myself some therapy to understand why I’m so addicted to shopping!

rosehipstalk · 09/04/2025 19:02

Morally I would let them know but not inconvenience myself in the return

Basically, this. I would certainly let them know but I am not making an inconvenient trip to the post office (where there is no easy place to park) in my precious lunch hour due to their mistake. They'd have to come and collect it from me. It's their mistake, not mine, so they can fix it. If they arent willing to do that then they arent getting it back.

Bellyblueboy · 09/04/2025 19:02

Slightly different issue happened to me - I ordered one large vase from next and they delivered a huge consignment containing twelve!

I rang repeatedly asking them to come and collect them - the delivery driver had left the large container in my garage. Eventually I gave up and donated the 11 extra ones.

Namechangean · 09/04/2025 19:08

I’ve seen threads like this before and mumsnet have always been a moral bunch when I’ve read the replies. Realised I’m not as good of a person as I think lol and I imagine your replies are no different but honestly… I’d keep them unopened, wait to see if I hear from them/am charged, if I’m not then I’d be keeping them

BunnyLake · 09/04/2025 17:38

Don’t independents sell through Amazon though? I haven’t bought from them for a while but I thought it was made up of lots of different companies?

Correct - there are things sold by Amazon and things sold by independents (small and large) using Amazon’s huge logistical coverage. Completely separate.

I ordered a ton of stuff and it came whilst I was on holiday. Didn’t realise it but it got delivered to the wrong address. I of course said I hadn’t got it so they resent it. Three months later the people whose house turned up and gave me the oqrcel

i contacted them but they didn’t care. Told me to sell them or pass them on.

I wouldn’t bother just because I tried so much but they didn’t mind. 🤷‍♀️

Friends1996 · 09/04/2025 17:01

No it’s not, but I did let the company know anyway if you read the updates

I’m amazed how much traffic this thread generated! It seems there’s a lot of people angry at you for even pondering an alternative to returning the items. For the average person, this is kinda just a lucky error which for them to just take it is hardly going to bankrupt a company with the sort of turnover you described. I think people are just jealous tbh 😅 and I reckon the majority would stay silent for a few weeks then bag the items! Imagine a supermarket accidentally including some nice wines and posh cheese in their online delivery. Do you really think people would let them know even if the value was a few hundred. People generally evaluate risk of being caught when they decide what to do in such situations and for low risk things down to a company error I absolutely reckon most people would honestly gleefully keep!

CandidExpert · 09/04/2025 12:28

Exactly the same scenario with me. Three times! Debenhams, New Look & an expensive independent jewellers.

I donated the items to the Women's Refuge.

Same! I eventually gave mine to a charity I work for which helps the homeless entrenched in addictions.

Frostynoman · 09/04/2025 19:13

Contact them and ask them to set up a return

TeaIsNice · 09/04/2025 19:18

be honest - easy

tiddletiddleboomboom · 09/04/2025 19:20

Like many on this thread have said, I would 1. walk to the HQ of the company with the contraband items on my back (even if its across the country) to confess their error whilst beating myself with woodland sticks I found along the way, for the horrific delay they experienced in getting their clothes back. 2. If they let me keep the clothes, I would immediately call in to the nearest church to confess my un-pure thoughts and the temptation I faced when first receiving the clothes. 3. I would cut the clothes into small symmetrical squares and spend the next 6 months fashioning jumpers out of them for homeless hedgehogs.
