I get quality might not be best…but i am postpartum…weight and overall look not the best at the moment and barely anything fits and if it does it shows my belly in an uncomfortable way! Cant afford a dresses which hopefully wont be needed in a few months and going to visit family in a couple of months so need something else besides bike shorts and stretchy t shirts!

has anyone used shein? Worth a try? Do they have easy returns?

OP posts:
Bjorkdidit · 06/04/2025 09:55

Well, I'd have assumed that it's not worth the cost of returning anything to China but now see they do free returns, which just seems impossible, considering you're mostly talking about cheap items.

I bought a cat play tent from there once, it was fine and good value. I haven't thought to buy clothes because admittedly I assumed it was cheap rubbish that looked nothing like the picture and unlikely to fit me. Perhaps I'm wrong?

Ginmonkeyagain · 06/04/2025 09:56

The photos online are enough to put me off Shein, the clothes always look fucking awful, so god knows what they are like in real life.

OP have you tried Sainsbury's? They often have some pretty decent stuff at affordable prices. Not exactly high fashion but ok for basics and the odd pretty summer dress or blouse.

grumpypedestrian · 06/04/2025 09:58

To all the people happily buying from there.

Do you just have no regard for working conditions? What if it was you or your children were forced to work for these companies?

I’ll not sugar coat it, I’m disgusted at people who buy from there.

Im on minimum wage and have lost weight. I would never buy from them.

Out of sight out of mind 😡

Bluebell865 · 05/04/2025 22:04

why would you buy from a company that supports slave labour??? Serious question.

Ask MN, Uniqlo uses child slave labour, as well as adult.

OP, really read the reviews and look at the measurements given. My family shop on Shein and have had less problems with fit than we have ordering off line at River Island etc. Returns are easy. You take a picture, upload to app, then get your QR code to return to post office, or label for other return methods. They deliver to Inpost lockers. You see the same fabric on Shein than in Zara etc, so they are using the same suppliers. You do become addicted to decorating every window for Christmas/Easter with their £1 window stickers, though.

WaltzingWaters · 06/04/2025 10:04

Environmentally and ethically it’s awful.

But then again, times are expensive. I got a few things from there when I was pregnant and had events to go to and couldn’t justify spending lots on a dress I’d wear once. The quality can be a bit hit or miss, but some of the dresses looked fantastic. It’s really easy and free to return and had no issues with refunds at all.

Since getting engaged I’ve been on a bunch of budget wedding fb pages, and people are always raving about the amazing quality of the wedding (£100ish) and bridesmaids dresses (£20ish) from there.

I do, but I don't buy from them a lot and struggle to find clothes I like elsewhere. E.g someone above suggested Sainsbury's and peacocks, I'd never wear anything from there, the clothes are just nondescript and I personally find them very boring. Sainsbury's clothes are overpriced too IME, I had a bra and knicker set from there that fell apart very quickly and while it wasn't expensive by any stretch nor was it cheap!

My lifestyle is far more ethical than many people's so I can live with it. (Second hand most things, not flown for far more than a decade, been vegan almost 25 years, make food from scratch mostly). Other people's ethical choices disgust me too.

EmmaOvary · 06/04/2025 10:06

Clothes made by children and prisoners in labour camps? Nah. We need to do better.

OohKittens · 06/04/2025 10:10

I would never even entertain looking at their site.

Whenwillthesunshine · 06/04/2025 10:17

Yes use it all the time, quality is not amazing for everything, never returned anything

BobbyBiscuits · 06/04/2025 10:18

I love it. They do some decent joggers and t-shirts. As long as you don't mind sweaty polyester! The sizes come up quite small though. I wear a small in their stuff in bottoms but medium in tops even though I'm quite skinny.
I don't just wear them a few times and chuck them away. Even though it's cheap I still get plenty of wear out of the clothes.

If I was a multimillionaire I probably wouldn't buy from them. But I'm sure some of the more upmarket retailers just use the exact same factory anyway?

ColourlessGreenIdeasSleepFuriously · 06/04/2025 10:21

I mean, if you are happy to support slave labour and destroy the environment, go ahead

jeaux90 · 06/04/2025 10:22

No because it’s Chinese shite.

MyBeloved · 06/04/2025 10:25

I'm really sad that people in this day and age think it is ok to buy from a company that is well known for using forced labour. Like, literal slaves. Slave adults and children. I get times are hard, and cheap options are tempting, but vinted, charity shops, and even primark or supermarket clothes are better than using companies such as Shein. Please think of those poor people being forced to work in unimaginable conditions, just so you can indulge in fast fashion.

Hyperfish808 · 06/04/2025 08:48

Quite….this thread is so bloody depressing.

we don’t need all these clothes! Even 20 years ago we bought less. Buy better quality and buy wisely. Things will last longer.

I was at our annual village car boot this morning. Stall upon stall with boxes and boxes of clothes. Literally tons of unwanted clothing in one small village, all destined for landfill. We could stop making clothes now and still have enough to keep people going in a hundred years.

KnickerlessParsons · 06/04/2025 10:43

Do you enjoy wearing clothes made by underpaid 5 year olds in sweat shops?

SnoozingFox · 06/04/2025 11:03

ColourlessGreenIdeasSleepFuriously · 06/04/2025 10:21

So many people are happy to do just that. They don’t care. And then make blanket sweeping statements about all other retailers being the same and how only shein out of every retailer on thr planet has clothes they’d consider wearing.

add me to the “disgusting” camp.

This is absolutely true. There are enough clothes on the planet now to comfortably clothe the next 6 generations.

ToffeePennie · 06/04/2025 11:18

Read the reviews and pay attention to the size charts and you’ll be grand. I have bought loads of stuff from Shein and Temu, never have an issue returning any of it.
Just recently I bought two suit outfits for our production of Legally Blonde and so far they’ve held up really really well.
In fact I have one blouse that I bought for a different show 3 years ago and I will be wearing it this time around and there’s no bobbling or anything.

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 06/04/2025 11:22

They have such a huge selection of plus sized clothes. It's really refreshing to go on a site and have thousands of size 18 options.

I have several dresses that are 3 years old and they still look the same as when I got them.
The quality is no different to things I have purchased in Primark and other cheaper high street stores.

Also returns are easy and I have been refunded within a couple of days.

I am a size 18 and I get a 1xl as I prefer things on the looser side.

The sandals are also good and have seen me through several summers.

I have also purchased some gorgeous mugs, a tablecloth and other home bits.

Yes, the ethics of the company are questionable, but it is hypocritical and ignorant to say Asos or Primark or H&M would be better options.

Unfortunately body size and finances mean not everyone has loads of options to feel good about themselves.

There's no ethical consumption under capitalism and I don't believe Shein is worse than other stores within my price point.

I do try to thrift and I buy a fair amount on Ebay, but I also love the bits I have got from Shein.

Ilady · 06/04/2025 11:27

I buy stuff from Shein. In regards to the clothes I have gotten some nice things. I use a inch tape to measure myself and check the size guide on each item before I buy it. If a top has a seem at the back I go up a size just for comfort. In regards to tee shirt just check what material they are made from as some of them are very clingy.
Shein also have nice scarves and accessories like jewellery as well. They have some gold and silver jewellery as well.

I have a friend at the moment who is losing weight but she needed some summer clothes. She got some trousers from Shein curve section and was happy with the sizing. She got a few kimono's and shirts as well. She will buy a few tee shirts from local shops because she prefers cotton tee shirts. She wants a few new things to look well as she loses weight. She is also on benefits.

Questionable?

Building a business on the backs of child slaves is a bit more than questionable.

But as long as you get to feel good about yourself!

Nevermindthebuzzard · 05/04/2025 21:31

It depends if you're happy to wear clothes knowing they're probably made by children who are paid a pittance.

Obv you don’t use Amazon then.

ColourlessGreenIdeasSleepFuriously · 06/04/2025 11:32

This is such a fucking copout. We have to consume to a certain extent but we can at least make an effort to ensure we do as little harm as possible.

LifeBeginsToday · 06/04/2025 11:32

I was going to just lurk, but I need to comment. It's appaling the amount of people who think thousands of options, dispose after two wears and refunds without even returning is a good thing. Shein is abhorrent. We don't need large volumes of clothes, we don't need disposable clothes, we don't need to put ourselves above others on the planet.

I don't. It's not obligatory 🙄and it's not hard to make more ethical choices if you give even a tiny shit
