Washing at night!

Controversial I know but is hanging your washing out at night a really bad thing?

I know I know, Spider Penises and Bugs etc but don’t these things also happen during the day?

We are a Family with small people with lots of washing and our tumble drier has recently broken down, plus cost of living and all that plus the sunshine early morning.

Husband is horrified i’ve hung some washing out on the line and also hung two clothes horses worth of clothes under our canopy this evening.

I just want to get the washing done!

Surely it’s not just me!?

TBH I find it less "scummy" than using the tumble drier in weather like this.

maggiesleapp · 05/04/2025 19:00

Have just hung mine out

LillyPJ · 05/04/2025 19:00

Why is your husband horrified?! The clothes won't know if it's night or day!

Frenzi · 05/04/2025 19:51

Im not a morning person. I start work at 7.30am and its a struggle.

I hang my washing out after midnight - it gets dry and my neighbours think I am an early riser!!!!

knor · 05/04/2025 20:08

I think it’s 100% fine! Like you said, tumble drier broken and cost of living, makes so much sense to try and dry as much as poss outside.

PaperSnowAGhost89 · 05/04/2025 21:00

I've just hung a load out now, do it all the time during spring/summer 😅 spider willies and being darked on doesn't bother me apparently 😂

Tangerine13 · 05/04/2025 21:41

Darked on-what does that mean? I have no idea

persisted · 05/04/2025 21:58

WestwardHo1 · 05/04/2025 18:41

Why? How?

Isn't scummy behaviour things like stealing and playing loud music all night? What's wrong with washing outside once the sun has gone down? Surely no one can see it anyway?

The world is baffling.

Exactly this.
I've got no idea why anyone would notice or care.
If the biggest problem someone has is my washing on the line overnight I am delighted for them!

PracticalLady · 05/04/2025 22:00

I'm with you! As we have a problem with humidity and resulting mould in our house, I prefer any wet washing to be outside rather than drying indoors. I will therefore hang it outside no matter what time it is.

1984Winston · 05/04/2025 22:05

No it will get darked on, my neighbour does this and it's just wrong

ChristineKo · 05/04/2025 22:52

What does Spider Penises mean?? 🫣

It means Nothing just boring recycled nonsense best ignored

Yourcatisnotsorry · 05/04/2025 23:19

I do it even though it gets darked on. I often leave it out for more than a day. I do something find earwigs in the clothes I bring in though.

What does Spider Penises mean?? 🫣

Its an old MN joke, same as "darked on". There is an explaination upthread.

ChristineKo · 06/04/2025 00:01

I think I can imagine lol omg

Confusedmeanderings · 06/04/2025 00:02

Not only am I quite happy to put my washing out at night, I also put it out if it's raining. Three reasons for this, the first being that I am obviously a slattern. Secondly, the rain will stop eventually and my washing will be already out on the line waiting to dry. And thirdly, I live quite close to a nuclear power station, I reckon it makes my whites whiter ! 🤣

antikkiti · 06/04/2025 00:07

Hoping to learn more about spider penises - and I'm desperate to know what being "darked on" means!

BizzyLizzyandLittleMo · 06/04/2025 00:23

No bring it in it’ll get all fusty smelling 😷

Mistunza · 06/04/2025 00:30

Watermill · 04/04/2025 21:19

It will get darked on 😱😱😱

I’ve also left my washing out, it is being darked on. There is a fence nearby so those damn spiders will be jumping across to rub their spidey willies on my clean clothes. 😰🫣

Cojones · 06/04/2025 01:28

LuckyOtters · 05/04/2025 13:58

Do people really care what the neighbours think about their washing habits? Seriously ?

@LuckyOtters we had a neighbour who very much cared that when she looked out her window she could see several of her neighbour’s hanging washing out regularly. The audacity! Still not sure why it bothered her but it very much upset her and she often complained to another resident. Zero f*cks were given.

IridiumSky · 06/04/2025 02:29

LeaveTaking · 04/04/2025 21:28

I have to ask… spider penises? Is this a known issue?

Depends on the size of the spider.

Tangerine13 · 06/04/2025 09:47

Thanks @Mistunza 😆

chaosmaker · 07/04/2025 19:50

Spidernet is full of spiders indignant that idiot people think they rub their peni on their washing. Guest user 'the dark' is similarly miffed and has far better things to do!

SparklyLeader · 09/04/2025 01:39

If your husband doesn't like how you do the laundry then he can do it or he can ST_U. That's an acronym for a phrase in the US regarding people and their opinions, but it's missing a letter. As the person who does the laundry, you, and you alone, have the final decision with regard to spider penises, night mist, or anything else involving laundry. Usually shaking out your clothes and drying it in the sun solves most problems.
