Washing at night!

Controversial I know but is hanging your washing out at night a really bad thing?

I know I know, Spider Penises and Bugs etc but don’t these things also happen during the day?

We are a Family with small people with lots of washing and our tumble drier has recently broken down, plus cost of living and all that plus the sunshine early morning.

Husband is horrified i’ve hung some washing out on the line and also hung two clothes horses worth of clothes under our canopy this evening.

I just want to get the washing done!

Surely it’s not just me!?

My mother would judge so hard! I am such a disappointment to her

I would be a permanent disappointment to her then

fandjango · 05/04/2025 10:45

Well i’m pleased to report my washing was nice and dry. Managed to get another two loads out too. Feel like i’m winning today haha

Feel like i’m amongst my own here!

My husband was horrified as i think he thinks the neighbours will be judging me but…I do not care.

Got to get the jobs done when you can!

Whilst I wouldn't judge you for putting them out at night, I would judge your pegging out skills.
My neighbour pegs hers out and how she does it really annoys me hahaha

Pushdontpull · 05/04/2025 10:55

My husband asked me what I was laughing about, so I reminded him about the being darked on and spider willy thread. He informed me that a lot of gentlemen spiders lose their willies due to them getting stuck inside the lady spiders during sex. He said he’s glad he isn’t a spider.

wherearemypastnames · 05/04/2025 12:41

can you ask your dh why exactly the neighbours would be judging you rather than you and him?

Reallyyyyyy · 05/04/2025 12:50

Yes literally racing through washing whilst the weather is nice. I put a final load out before bed at about 11pm. It's dry by 9am latest ready for another lot.

No no no no no an no again
Its cold and damp and how can that me good for clean washing?

Well how is cold and damp bad for washing given that wet washing is already both of those things?

BelleDeJourRose · 05/04/2025 13:14

My younger dd has got quite a sensitive nose and sometimes smells things I don't. She'd definitely notice if the washing smelled funky or mouldy but doesn't. It's not like if you left it in the washer overnight as the air can get to it.

YourWinter · 05/04/2025 13:18

If I’m changing all the beds I can’t fit it all on the line, so one load goes out at bedtime, on a nice morning it’s ready to come in by the time the breakfast time load is spun and ready to go out. I’m nearly 70, I’ve never had a problem with line drying overnight, spiders, or bad things that come in the dark.

Glitterblue · 05/04/2025 13:21

I do it all the time if it’s not due to rain. Dry by morning in the summer 🙂

🥱, because it was OP who hung the washing out, not her DH.

LuckyOtters · 05/04/2025 13:58

Do people really care what the neighbours think about their washing habits? Seriously ?

Maybe the willy-free spiders who visit the laundry line are trying to learn about pegging

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 05/04/2025 14:09

Mine goes out when I have time to hang it out. If that's 10.30 at night - out it goes. I give no fucks for spider willies, disapproving neighbours, darkness, webs or a bit of dew.

I'm hard, me.

Jumpingthruhoops · 05/04/2025 14:28

I'm sorry... but 'spider penises'? 🤔

It’s scummy behaviour tbh

mangosmoothie123 · 05/04/2025 18:24

It’s no different to forgetting to bring in your washing in the evening and leaving it out for another day (guilttttyyyy)🤭

😂😂😂😂😂😂

TipsyMaker · 04/04/2025 21:18

No, I've hung it out the night before so that its out ready in the morning to dry 😂

Same here. Especially in the summer, it doesn't bake when it dries, so the few bits that do get ironed are much easier to iron.

asrl78 · 05/04/2025 18:29

I don't see an issue with hanging washing out at night, I do it occasionally but only during the warmer times of the year (i.e. not winter). If it is going to be cool/cold overnight it makes more sense to use the clothes airer indoors given my house will be warmer than outside. In summer there is no need to leave clothes on the line overnight since I tend to do laundry in the morning, if hung out early in the day, the clothes will be dry by sunset. Living alone means there isn't much laundry to dry anyway.

WestwardHo1 · 05/04/2025 18:39

This week I hung some washing out and then went away for a couple of nights.

God knows what the neighbours thought of this.

WestwardHo1 · 05/04/2025 18:41

Hmm1234 · 05/04/2025 18:22

It’s scummy behaviour tbh

Why? How?

Isn't scummy behaviour things like stealing and playing loud music all night? What's wrong with washing outside once the sun has gone down? Surely no one can see it anyway?

The world is baffling.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 05/04/2025 18:42

I am more likely to judge people who don't put their washing out at all. I know at least 2 people who refuse to spoil the look of their gardens by hanging washing out. Neither of them come from posh backgrounds.

Topseyt123 · 05/04/2025 18:44

Bollocks. Of course it isn't scummy behaviour. 🙄

I'm just about to put some swimming towels and a few bits out on the line when the machine finishes.

Well that has to be better than leaving them wet either in swimming bag or washing machine surely?

I'm now wondering if the increase in mould we keep hearing about is due to wet washing hanging about.
